Book excerpt: The literature suggests that aggressive behaviors occur in response to provocation (i.e., reactive aggression) or to achieve a goal (i.e., instrumental aggression). Relational aggression - hen an individual harms another interpersonal relationships - has been studied from the reactive and instrumental framework in peer-directed contexts, usually with children. However, relational aggression in romantic relationships is yet to be studied from this framework. This dissertation includes a series of studies investigating whether two specific relationally aggressive behaviors found in romantic relationships (i.e., social sabotage and love withdrawal) are 1) motivated by instrumental and reactive aggression, 2) associated with differential characteristics, and 3) predictive of negative outcomes. The Romantic Relational Aggression Motivation (RRAM) scale, which included social sabotage and love withdrawal items with both instrumental and reactive motivations, was created to explore the above research questions. During Study 1a, an exploratory factor analysis using a sample of 170 emerging adults tested the factor structure of the RRAM. This resulted in love withdrawal, but not social sabotage, factoring into instrumental and reactive subscales. Using the same sample at a later wave, Study 1b refined the RRAM from Study 1a; the findings confirmed the results of Study 1a. In Study 2, using a sample of 118 emerging adults, the factor structure found in Study 1b was corroborated using a confirmatory factor analysis. Study 2 found that social sabotage was more closely related to instrumental than reactive love withdrawal. Reactive and instrumental love withdrawal were clearly differentiated based on their associations with constructs that were emotionally driven (e.g. neuroticism and hostile attribution bias) but not by their associations with constructs that dealt with power (e.g. self-relationship power and trait dominance). None of the romantic relational aggression scales were predictive of the negative outcomes in the study, possibly due to the small sample size (85 emerging adults) in the longitudinal portion of Study 2. As instrumental and reactive love withdrawal were associated with different constructs and combining the two together may cause substantial differences to be lost, the RRAM may be a useful tool for researchers of romantic relational aggression.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine relational aggression including associations with social-cognitive and affective factors in emerging adulthood. A sample of 217 (150 women) emerging adults (M age = 18.97 years; SD = 1.29) participated in a study on the functions of relational aggression in peer and romantic relationships. We examined the associations between socio-cognitive (normative beliefs about relational aggression, exclusivity, and rumination) and affective (emotion dysregulation and callous-unemotional traits) factors in general forms of peer and romantic relational aggression and proactive and reactive functions of peer and romantic relational aggression. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on several items assessing reactive and proactive romantic relational aggression. Hierarchal multiple regression was used to examine unique associations between social-cognitive and affective factors and relational aggression sub types. Findings suggest that exclusivity and normative beliefs about aggression uniquely contributed engagement in relation aggression across relationship contexts. Findings of this study extend the literature on relational aggression in emerging adulthood.

Book excerpt: The peer group is a dynamic context within which children and adolescents have a wide range of experiences, both positive and negative. Friendships provide support and a sense of belonging; however, friendships can also be contexts within which competition and aggression occur. During childhood and adolescence, aggression and victimization are likely to occur in the school context and in situations where several members of the peer group are present and sometimes actively (or passively) participating. In the seminal work related to bullying as a group process, Salmivalli and colleagues identified distinct roles that children take when enacting aggression (Salmivalli et al., 1996). Salmivalli's work, in the area of participant roles, however, has focused on overt bullying, a specific subtype of aggression which has a specific meaning within the peer relations literature. To date, the participant roles have not been measured within the context of overt and relational aggression. The purpose of the present study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Overt Aggression Participant Role Scale (OAPRS) and the Relational Aggression Participant Role Scale (RAPRS), two new scales designed by the author, to measure the aggressor, assistant, reinforcer, defender, outsider, and victim roles during acts aggression, as opposed to bullying. Additional goals include: 1) exploring the associations among the roles, 2) examining measurement equivalence across gender and grade level, and 3) exploring associations of the participant roles with measures of sociometric status and depressive symptoms. Findings point toward the psychometric properties of the two scales being quite robust. The data fit the 12 factor model and the scales measure the constructs equivalently across gender and three grade groups. The aggressor, assistant, and reinforcer roles were strongly associated as were the aggressor and victim roles. Several relational roles were highly overlapping, suggesting reciprocity of roles. Few meaningful gender or grade level differences were found resulting in more similarity in the overt and relational roles than differences. The outsider role was the only role not associated with depressive symptoms. Implications for prevention and intervention are discussed.

However, the behaviors associated with relational aggression are often subtle and difficult to detect. Consequently, far less attention has been given to measurement of relational aggression than it requires. Insufficient forms of measurement have resulted in unreliable and potentially invalid inferences regarding the construct. In order to address this need, the current study initiated the process of constructing and validating a broad measure of aggression, including relational aggression. The Young Adult Conflict Resolution and Aggression Questionnaire - Self-report (YACRA-S) was completed by college students residing in a university dormitory (N = 108). Contemporary (Rasch, 1960, 1980) analyses were conducted on the data collected with this measure, providing empirical support for the multidimensionality of the broad aggression construct and supporting previous conclusions that relational aggression is most appropriately measured as a distinct construct. Further studies are necessary to gather sufficient empirically-based reliability and validity evidence for the YACRA-S, with the eventual goal of constructing a measure of relational aggression that provides more reliable and valid inferences than current methods.

Book excerpt: Relational aggression is a devastating problem that has long-lasting consequences for children, especially girls. Although some studies have found that girls who disclose more to their friends experience higher levels of relational aggression, other studies have found that those who experience aggression disclose less than those who do not experience aggression. It is possible that this difference is related to the type of friendships being assessed and who is describing the friendship (i.e., self-report versus peer report). The purpose of this study was to expand on previous research regarding self-disclosure and relational aggression by addressing these differences. First, this study addressed children's experiences in three relationship contexts: dyadic friendships, friendship networks, and peer groups. This study also included both self- and peer-reports. It was hypothesized that the association between relational aggression and self-disclosure would depend on the specific relationship context being assessed. The study included 62 girls from a community-based social organization and 37 girls from a high school setting. Each participant completed a peer nomination form and self-report measures regarding her friendships with other girls. Results showed that perpetration of relational aggression was positively associated with being victimized by relational aggression, especially within dyadic relationships and friendship networks. Disclosing personal information was positively associated with being a confidant to other girls, especially within friendship networks. Victimization and disclosing were positively correlated among the peer group in the school sample. Differences between the community sample and school sample were primarily seen within the peer group. Implications for interventions to reduce relational aggression are discussed.
