Book Exploratory Experiments Comparing Damage Effects of High energy Neutrons and Fission reactor Neutrons in Metals

Download or read book Exploratory Experiments Comparing Damage Effects of High energy Neutrons and Fission reactor Neutrons in Metals written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the Rotating-Target Neutron Source II (RTNS II) and the Li(D, n) stripping source for high fluxes of high-energy neutrons are in operation, work related to DMFE's fusion-reactor materials and radiation-effects program is being conducted with lower-flux prototypes, the RTNS I at LLL and a Be(D, n) stripping source at the University of California, Davis. This paper describes these sources and presents results of some exploratory experiments in which 0.5-mm-thick tensile specimens of copper, vanadium, niobium, and Nb-1 wt% Zr alloy were irradiated by high-energy neutrons from these sources and by lower-energy neutrons from the Livermore Pool-Type Reactor (LPTR). After being irradiated, the specimens were tensile-tested, and the increases in their 0.2%-offset yield strengths were related to the neutron fluences and energies to which they had been subjected.

Book Analysis of Radiation Damage in Fusion simulation Neutron Spectra

Download or read book Analysis of Radiation Damage in Fusion simulation Neutron Spectra written by and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various parameters which are relevant to an understanding of radiation effects in metals have been evaluated utilizing available neutron spectrum information for several existing sources, e.g., EBRII, HFIR, and LAMPF, as well as the hypothetical spectrum at a fusion reactor first wall, and measured Li(d, n) spectra. Recoil energy distributions were calculated for several metals including Al, Cu, and Nb. The recoil energy range was divided into groups, and the fraction of recoils occurring in each energy group was compared with the fraction of the damage energy contributed by that group. From this comparison it was possible to conclude that the significant recoil range differs by about an order of magnitude between fission and fusion sources. The analysis further confirms that basic defect production characteristics depend upon the neutron spectrum, and that integral calculations of radiation-effect parameters do not provide a complete description of the dependence. This is equally true for comparisons between fusion-related spectra or fission-reactor spectra independently. Four recoil-dependent parameter functions which describe different aspects of radiation damage were used in the calculations. The relative effectiveness of neutron sources was found to depend upon the choice of parameter function. Fission-reactor spectra comparisons are relatively insensitive to the parameter functions used whereas spectra with an appreciable component of high-energy neutrons are much more sensitive. (auth).

Book Determination of the Damage energy Cross Section of 14 MeV Neutrons from Critical property Changes in Irradiated Nb3Sn

Download or read book Determination of the Damage energy Cross Section of 14 MeV Neutrons from Critical property Changes in Irradiated Nb3Sn written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Short samples of single-core and 19-core multifilament wires in bronze jackets have been irradiated with 14-MeV neutrons to a total fluence of 2 x 1018 n/cm2 using the Livermore Rotating Target Neutron source. At fluences of 1 and 2 x 1018 n/cm2 the critical temperature was measured, and also the critical current as a function of applied transverse magnetic field up to 175 kG to ascertain the radiation-induced changes in these properties. Measurements as a function of fluence of identical samples following reactor-neutron irradiation established the baseline for comparison of the 14-MeV results. By comparing the changes observed and relating them to the spectrum-averaged damage-energy cross section for the HFBR neutrons, a value for the damage-energy cross section for 14-MeV neutrons has been deduced of 313/sup +50/0 bkeV. Comparison of the critical current vs applied field for the two types of irradiation indicates that the flux-pinning characteristics are different for equal damage energies. This can be explained by a larger cascade region produced by the 14-MeV neutrons relative to those produced by fission-reactor neutrons with a coupled reduced resistivity increase for 14-MeV neutrons with respect to fission-reactor neutrons for equivalent damage energies.

Book Damage function Analysis of Neutron energy and Spectrum Effects Upon the Radiation Embrittlement of Steels

Download or read book Damage function Analysis of Neutron energy and Spectrum Effects Upon the Radiation Embrittlement of Steels written by C. Z Serpan (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents the results of a new, comprehensive set of experimental data conforming to the irradiation conditions of the derived damage function (material, temperature, and fluence). The results of this experiment are discussed in terms of their establishing the validity of the damage function. Averaged values of the damage function are tabulated for a typical reactor physics calculation energy group structure, and their application to two different spectra is described. Finally, the damage-function fluences required to cause a 200F Delta-TT in A302-B steel are presented for many different reactor locations. For each of the spectra involved, the upper and lower energy limits of significantly damaging neutrons are given, and some detail is also provided regarding the contribution of subgroups within the overall energy spectrum.
