Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Explorations and Adventures in Honduras: Comprising Sketches of Travel in the Gold Regions of Olancho, and a Review of the History and General Resources of Central America; With Original Maps, and Numerous Illustrations Neither books nor maps relating to Honduras could at that time be found in California. The able work of Mr. E. Gr. Squier on Nicaragua, so admired for its delightful narrative style and valuable ethnological facts, had been with difficulty obtained; but that author had not then made his second visit to Central America, and consequently the valuable information he has since given to the world on Honduras had not been published. The works and maps of English and other foreign writers on Central America had never reached the Pacific coast - even their names were unknown. But, had these been accessible, they would have proved useless as guides, owing to their authors' ignorance of the country I proposed to visit, particularly of Eastern Hon duras and the extensive section drained by the Guayape. This river, in some maps, even as late as 1855, is made a tributary of the Roman or Aguan, discharging into the Caribbean Sea near Truxillo, when it is actually the Patock itself, but bearing in the interior a distinct name. The topography of the country seems to have been thrown in hap-hazard to fill up unsightly blanks in maps of which only the coast-lines, in some instances, were correct, a circumstance due to the accurate Admiralty sur veys. In fact, as I afterward ascertained, Honduras was as much a term incognita as the interior of Japan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Lost City of the Monkey God

Download or read book The Lost City of the Monkey God written by Douglas Preston and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-03 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NAMED A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2017#1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller! A five-hundred-year-old legend. An ancient curse. A stunning medical mystery. And a pioneering journey into the unknown heart of the world's densest jungle. Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization. Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease. Suspenseful and shocking, filled with colorful history, hair-raising adventure, and dramatic twists of fortune, THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century.

Book BRANCHES

Download or read book BRANCHES written by Flor de Maria Suarez and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ramifiation of a Central American Family shares the wealth of facts not only about the Zelayas, Nuilas, Turcios and Suarez families, but the history of Honduras- its discovery, conquest, its pacification, the building of its iconic houses of worship and the ever present revolutions. the modern history of Central America and of my family includes the 20's and 30's, when governmental attempts to dissolve power that up to then had rested on the small elite segment of society gave way to dictatorial states everywhere but, Costa Rica. for the next fifty years with only brief and occasional lapses dictators were at the helm. and it was in this environment where families including mine, survived oppression, uncertainty and fear. the RCAF describes our immigration to Costa Rica, where my family worked as professionals and contributed to its citizenship. Ultimately, immigrating to the United States in the 1950's during the cusp of the cold war. Reflecting on the lifespan of this one family that joined other branches just as rich in their history offers a clear picture of the influence of religion, successful and responsible immigrations and the ultimate nature of Central American families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a political and cultural history of Honduras, covering the era of the Mayan and Lenca civilizations to today's current political strife. Honduras has suffered both political trauma and natural disasters throughout its history. In 1969, Honduras' political tensions with El Salvador during a soccer series preliminary to the World Cup led to the four-day-long "Football War." In 1998, Hurricane Mitch caused billions of dollars of damage to Honduras; ten years later, half of the country's roadways were ruined, often beyond repair, by substantial flooding. Most recently, many countries have frowned upon the Honduran government's shift of power from the president to the head of Congress. The History of Honduras provides a comprehensive history of the small Latin American country, detailing Honduras's geography and current political systems with emphasis on its politics and cultural life. Recent coups and political controversy make Honduras an important Central American nation for today's students to study and understand.

Book Culture and Customs of Honduras

Download or read book Culture and Customs of Honduras written by Janet N. Gold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-04-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive look at contemporary life in the small Latin American nation allows high school students and general readers to explore the many facets of Honduran life and culture. More and more Hondurans and scholars today are becoming aware of the diversity in the nation, and are realizing that rather than a single, homogeneous culture, Honduras is made up of many different cultures. Gold incorporates this contemporary cultural consciousness in her treatment of Honduras's regional and linguistic diversity as well as in her descriptions of Honduras's indigenous communities. Key elements of the work include a look at national identity and cultural diversity, as well as an in-depth study of indigenous Honduras. Other chapters examine religion, as well as daily routines, cuisine, dress, media, sports, festivals, literature and oral storytelling, traditional crafts, visual arts, and music and dance. Ideal for high school students studying world culture, Latin American studies, and anthropology, as well as for general readers interested in the subject, Culture and Customs of Honduras is an essential addition for library shelves.
