Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between school-wide PBIS and suspensions among middle school students using a quasi-experimental, ex post facto, longitudinal case study of in-school suspension (ISS) and out-of-school suspension (OSS) for school years 2010-2011 through 2014-2105 at an urban middle school in Southern New England. The data collected in this study showed a significant reduction in the number of office referrals, ISS, and OSS occurred during the five school years when PBIS was implemented when compared to the five years prior to the implementation of PBIS at the school. The data also showed that the degree to which gender played a role in suspension did not differ in the five years prior to PBIS implementation when compared to the five years during which PBIS was implemented at the school. Additionally, the data revealed a statistically significant difference in the number of students in grade 7 who were being suspended during the five years in which PBIS was implemented when compared to students in grade 5. The grade 7 suspension rate is also notably higher than that of grade 8, but this difference failed to reach the level of statistical significance by a small margin.

In various research studies, positive student and school behavior outcomes have been associated with Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) since its implementation in schools in the late 1990s. However, additional research in understanding the impact of PBIS practices on reported school suspension, school climate perceptions, and student academic achievement (i.e., standardized test scores) would be useful. This study could potentially contribute to the literature and fill a gap not yet explored on the relationship between PBIS implementation and discipline practices impacting African American students, school climate perceptions, and student achievement. School officials can utilize this study's findings to determine their dedication and commitment to PBIS as a behavior intervention within school systems. Utilizing data collected from a large urban school district in Ohio, this study will examine the association between PBIS implementation, the suspension rate of all students, individual student achievement, and school climate perceptions while emphasizing PBIS' impact on African American students. The research data in this study will focus on grade levels elementary through high school. The data will be analyzed using linear regressions. Limitations of this study will be discussed.

Book excerpt: Schoolwide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (SWPBIS) is a tiered program that provides three levels of behavior and social-emotional support for students. Tier one is for all students, tier two is for some students in need of targeted or some additional intervention, while tier three is for few students who need the most intensive support (Center on PBIS, 2023b; Lewis et al., 2017; Simonsen et al., 2008; Sugai & Horner, 2002). Schools have increasingly implemented Schoolwide Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (SWPBIS), but research suggests that few high schools have implemented SWPBIS when compared with elementary and middle schools (Feuerborn et al., 2015; Flannery et al., 2013). High schools have varying contextual factors that differ from elementary and middle schools, presenting distinctive challenges with the implementation process and fidelity of SWPBIS. This qualitative phenomenological study explores secondary teachers’ perceptions of the school-wide and class-wide implementation process of SWPBIS at the high school level and its impact on students with disabilities and other health impairments. Additionally, this study examines secondary teachers’ perceptions of effective discipline strategies and their perception regarding out-of-school suspensions. Findings suggest that inequitable practices of the SWPBIS may likely stem from personal beliefs and philosophy of SWPBIS, teacher autonomy in the classroom, lack of time and inconsistent implementation, and buy-in.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study evaluated the influence of academic, behavioral, and sociocultural variables on the implementation of Schoolwide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS), a system intended to improve discipline in school buildings. The number of schools that are implementing SWPBS has been increasing dramatically over the years as school violence continues to rise and solutions are needed to improve school climate. This study examined the relationship between three categories of variables and the level of implementation of SWPBS in three multiple regression analyses. The categories were school demographic variables (i.e., ethnicity, socio-economic status, teacher: student ratio, percentage of teachers who are out-of-field), severity of need for change (suspensions, office referrals, percentage of students below grade level in reading), and team process variables (coaching, team functioning, administrative support). Of these variables, team functioning was the only one found to be significantly related to implementation. A second component of the study involved collecting data relating to factors that were enablers or barriers to the implementation of SWPBS. Two-hundred and thirty-six school personnel completed a survey, Schoolwide Implementation Factor Survey (SWIF). The survey derived three factors through a factor analysis: school, staff, and students; principal; and assistant principal. These factors were all found to have a high Cronbach's alpha for internal consistency. There were significant differences between schools with a high, middle, and low level of implementation on all of these factors, with respondents from high implementing schools scoring the highest on all factors, and respondents from low implementing schools scoring the lowest. The item on the survey rated as the most helpful in the implementation process was "Expectations and rules that are clearly defined," while the item rated as the most problematic in the implementation process was "Adequate funding for PBS." Book excerpt: Abstract The purpose of this research thesis is to explore strategies that would include students with mild to moderate disabilities in a school-wide Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program; specifically with four students with mild to moderate disabilities in an inclusive third grade classroom. Multiple measures were used to evidence the students' baseline behavioral data prior to the intervention: PBIS instruction with the use of accommodations. PBIS instruction was taught daily for a six week period. Post-intervention behavioral data was then gathered and mathematically measured against pre-intervention data. The quantitative data showed that each of the four participants improved their behavior in frequency, duration, and intensity. Overall unwanted behaviors of the four student participants were reduced between 78% and 95%, with each student making positive growth in their targeted behaviors. The significance of this research is that it addresses the previously widely ignored population of students and helps create strategies for how to implement them in a school-wide PBIS program. Book excerpt: Public schools are faced with the ever-increasing pressure of maintaining a safe learning environment while continuously improving student performance. Also, there has been a growing concern among administrators and teachers for implementing an effective discipline plan that will keep students in class and engaged in learning as much as possible. In response, school-wide Positive Behavior Support (PBS) models are growing in popularity to address both of these issues. An effective school-wide Positive Behavior Support model, if implemented correctly, involves an entire school population (students, faculty and school administration). This study focused on the effects of PBS implementation on office discipline referrals and TAKS mathematics and Reading scores comparing two similar suburban intermediate schools; one that implemented a school-wide PBS program and a non-PBS school during a three year period. The quantitative results of this study revealed significant differences were found during specific years of the study for in-school suspensions, out-of-school suspensions, and student TAKS mathematics scores; however, no significant differences were found for DAEP placements and student TAKS Reading scores for all three years of the study respectively. Results from the qualitative inquiry revealed that the experimental school improved TAKS performance each year, experienced a decline in office discipline referrals, developed a strong sense of staff and student loyalty about their school, had minimal teacher turnover, conducted staff trainings with fidelity, and established very clear school-wide expectations among students and staff. Results from the control school revealed no difference in the number of office discipline referrals, an increase in serious student disruptive behaviors, a decline on TAKS performance, inconsistencies in staff trainings, and an increase in teacher turnover. Therefore, it is hard to be certain if PBS implementation made a distinct impact on student achievement during the years of this study. It is recommended that future studies are conducted over longer periods of time to assess the effects of PBS implementation versus the absence of PBS implementation at various school levels and settings.

Book excerpt: This quantitative ex post facto study investigated the relationship between the number of Office Discipline Referrals (ODRs) that result in out-of-school suspensions and levels of positive behavior intervention and support (PBIS) in elementary, middle, and high schools in three school districts in the Southeastern United States. Many public schools decrease disruptive classroom behaviors that negatively affect the learning environment by implementing evidence-based practices like the PBIS framework that uses six attributes--a multi-tiered approach, reinforcement, data, systems, outcomes, and environment--that addresses the daily systems, data, and practices that affect student outcomes. Also, schools are utilizing internal PBIS coaches to assist in building and sustaining the PBIS framework. The PBIS framework served as a conceptual lens for this study. The U.S. Department of Education Civil Rights Data Collection website served as a data source on office referrals that resulted in an out-of-school suspension. From the website, the researcher collected archival data recorded on a convenience sample (N=285) from elementary, middle, and high schools during the summer 2019 semester. The researcher used Kruskal-Wallis H testing to compare mean differences between the three groups. The results did not find that levels of PBIS support affect ODRs. The conclusions drawn from this study infer that the outcome value of the PBIS framework--a reduction in office referrals--needs to be revisited. Furthermore, the study showed a need to examine PBIS implementation science and close the research-to-practice gap. The study has implications for researchers, educators, and educational policymakers.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative, causal-comparative study was to determine the effect of School-Wide Behavioral Interventions and Supports (SWPBIS) on students’ academic success, specifically in reading and math. There is a growing problem with accountability on teachers to ensure their students’ success. However, one of the many barriers of ensuring this success is the behavioral aspects of the student. This study took a look at one particular framework, Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS), designed to help students overall academic success to determine if there is a relationship between the framework and student achievement data (Mississippi Academic Assessment Program) by conducting a Multivariance analysis of variance, or MANOVA. PBIS is a framework designed to meet the needs of students behaviorally, to enhance the overall academic success of students. This study took a look at five schools (both with and without full, school-wide PBIS implementation), 398 third grade students’ academic success of reading and math Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) scale scores in the southern region of the state. Also, there were previous studies conducted to demonstrate the success rate of students in terms of discipline, not specifically targeting students’ academic success. This study found that there is a difference in academic scores of students who participated in PBIS than those that did not. However, recommendations for conducting this study in the future will include the researcher to include more regions of the entire state, conduct study post Covid-19, add additional grade levels, and separate the two content areas.
