Book excerpt: Excerpt from Official Report of the Exploration of the Queen Charlotte Islands: For the Government of British Columbia When the water which once covered the whole earth sub sided, a raven (ne-kil-stlas) was the only creature surviving. In his loneliness he started around the islands, seeking com panionship, and when passing Sand Spit Point heard very faint cries, which he soon discovered proceeded from a cockle Shell lying upon the beach. Iwhile examining it with great wonder, the voices grew louder and louder, until finally there issued therefrom several male infant children, which rapid ly increasing in stature joined him in a common search for mates. Upon reaching the lonely island of Ninstints they fouad females clinging helplessly to the rocks, whom rescu ing and taking for their wives, peopled the land. Book excerpt: Haida-Gwaii (the Queen Charlotte Islands) were still relativelyuntouched by European exploration when, in the summer of 1878, a younggeologist name George Dawson arrived there on behalf of the GeologicalSurvey of Canada. Separated from the mainland by many kilometres ofwater, the islands had retained a distinct ecological and culturalenvionment that reflected millennia of isolation. They were, at thetime that Dawson visited them, home to many rare species of plants andanimals as well as to the unique culture of the Haida people. One of the most remarkable scientists and explorers of his time,Dawson drew maps, collected fossil, plant and insect specimens, andinvestigated the ethnology of the Native people. His interest in Nativeculture is readily apparent in his personal reports and privatejournals, and he collected artifacts and took photographs which arewell known for their early depictions of Haida villages andarchitecture. Yet what is most amazing is that he accomplished all thisdespite being physically challenged by the debilitating effects of achildhood illness. This edition of Dawson's 1878 exploration of the Queen CharlotteIslands includes a reprint of Dawson's report, On the HaidaIndians of the Queen Charlotte Islands, as well as numerousphotographs taken by Dawson during his explorations. The text of the1878 journal is meticulously annotated by editors Cole and Lockner, whoalso provide an informative introduction which includes biographical, scientific, and ethnological details.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When June Cameron and Paul Holsinger set out in 1983 in Paul's ancient 26-foot wooden sloop, Wood Duck, to cross the perilous Hecate Strait and explore the weather-beaten west coast of the Queen Charlotte Islands (now known as Haida Gwaii), they knew they would face danger. But June had raced her own sailboat for years and Paul was a gifted mechanic, so they put trepidation aside and answered the call to adventure. 26 Feet to the Charlottes takes readers to remote beaches, uninhabited First Nations villages, abandoned mines and sheltered coves. Compelling reading for sailors and armchair adventurers alike, June's story conveys the joys and challenges of travelling by boat and living off the sea, and recalls a coast that has changed dramatically in the last century. Their journey taught them much about the challenges faced by the area's First Nations inhabitants—and much about why skippers do not sail the outer coast of the Charlottes for pleasure. There are no lighthouses, and many rocks and reefs are uncharted. June and Paul's survival would depend on cautious, observant navigation—and luck. 26 Feet to the Charlottes takes readers to remote beaches, uninhabited First Nations villages, abandoned mines and sheltered coves.
