Book excerpt: Speech-language pathologists (SLP) provide services for communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders to individuals from racially diverse backgrounds in educational, health care, and private practice settings; however, there is a great discrepancy in client-clinician demographics with minimal representation of clinicians from diverse backgrounds to serve diverse population of clients (ASHA, 2020). The current SLP culture continues to show a strong preference for White individuals as reflected through the professional demographics, researched populations and biased standardized assessments (ASHA, 2019) (Kohert, 2009). As a result, BIPOC clients may be met with inequitable services that can have long-term effects. By adopting a critical race theory and social justice perspective, SLPs may better understand how their beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes may be oppressive towards racial/ethnic minoritized groups. Therefore, this project aims to present three self-paced education modules that discuss different forms of racism: institutional, systemic, and interpersonal, and how these may be detrimental to clients, SLP students, and colleagues across educational and health care settings.

Within other fields of clinically-oriented practice, social justice is a topic that has received a great deal of attention within the last few years. Pedagogy for addressing social justice has been developed in other disciplines. The field of communication disorders has failed to move forward and do the same. Discussion of social justice is important given the current sociopolitical climate and landscape that clients carry out in their day-to-day functioning. Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have an opportunity to engage in practices that help address and alleviate some of the injustices that contribute to educational and health disparities experienced by communities of color. They may do this through the development and application of a socially just orientation of culturally competent practice that fosters changes beyond the individual level. Adapting such a framework makes it possible for SLPs to effectively advocate for and foster equity and inclusion for the individuals and broader communities impacted by SLP services. Critical Perspectives on Social Justice in Speech-Language Pathology addresses the socio-political contexts of how the field of speech-language pathology and service delivery can impact policy and debates related to social justice issues. It explores social position factors and the experiences of marginalized communities to explore how speech-language pathologists deliver services, train and prepare students, and carry out research in communities of color. It covers topic areas including disproportionality in special education, disability rights and ableism, achievement and opportunity gaps, health disparities, and LGBTQ+ rights with a focus on voice, communication, and gender-diverse populations. Book excerpt: Speech-language pathologists provide assessment and intervention for communication, cognition, and swallowing disorders for individuals across the lifespan in educational, medical, and private practice settings. The demographics of professionals in the field do not reflect those of the general public in regard to race and ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status, LGBTQ+, and disability. Lack of representation of minorities limits research, policy, and services designed to serve diverse populations. Although initiatives have sought to address lack of diversity of speech-language pathologists, limited research on the graduate training experience for minority students is available. Since a master's degree is required to become a speech-language pathologist, the experiences of minority students in their graduate training programs offer a unique perspective on inclusion in relation to diversity. This study examined minority graduate students' experiences of inclusion, their advice to a peer, recommendations to programs, and the design of an inclusive recruitment flyer. Results of the study showed how many speech-language pathology graduate programs are designed to operate from a privileged perspective that is white, middle-class, female, cisgender and heterosexual, and neurotypical and able-bodied. When applying critical theory and social justice concepts, this perspective serves as a form of privilege that oppresses minority students through multiple practices that grant benefits and opportunities to a dominant identity group. Recommendations are provided to program administrators, faculty members, and students, which address underlying beliefs about diversity, offer ways to change the environment to promote inclusion, and include mitigation strategies for the negative effects of lack of inclusion.
