Même si l'information à traiter dans l'environnement est souvent de nature spatiale, la plupart des recherches sur la mémoire à court terme portept sur le traitement de l'information verbale. Par ailleurs, le traitement de l'information verbale et -spatiale en mémoire à court terme fait encore l'objet d'un débat en psychologie cognitive. Certains auteurs suggèrent qu'il existe un module indépendant responsable de traiter chaque type d'information (p. ex., Baddeley & Hitch, 1974). Cette approche est notamment supportée par la démonstration de dissociations entre le traitement de l'information verbale et le traitement de l'information spatiale (p. ex., Meiser & Klauer, 1999). Une approche unitaire quant à elle, soutient que les processus en mémoire sont indépendants du type d'information à traiter (p. ex., Jones, Macken, & Nicholls, 2004). Cette approche trouve appui parmi les études qui démontrent que la rétention de l'information spatiale et la rétention de l'information verbale produisent des patrons de performance équivalents (p. ex., Ward, Avons, & Melling, 2005). L'objectif de la thèse est de tester ces visions alternatives et de vérifier si les mêmes processus sont sollicités lor"s de la rétention de l'information verbale et spatiale. La rétention de l'information spatiale et verbale est comparée directement à l'aide d'une tâche classique de rappel où les participants doivent rappeler l'ordre dans lequel des séries d'items ont été présentées (Chapitre II). Une procédure de double dissociation combinée à une analyse approfondie des erreurs sont utilisées. Bien que les résultats démontrent la présence d'une double dissociation, le traitement de l'information verbale et spatiale produit des patrons d'erreurs équivalents. Dans le chapitre III, les facteurs qui influencent le rappel de l'information spatiale sont examinés afin de mieux comprendre la nature des processus responsables de retenir ce type d'information. Une analyse du mouvement oculaire combinée à l'utilisation d'une tâche de suppression oculaire montre que l'efficacité avec laquelle les yeux sont déplacés entre les items influence la mémoire pour les localisations spatiales. L'ensemble de ces résultats est interprété à la lumière d'une nouvelle approche théorique selon laquelle la coopération entre les systèmes perceptifs et moteurs sont responsables de la rétention de l'information.

Toutefois, alors que l'ensemble des données montrent un avantage de ces connaissances sur le rappel des items, leurs effets en ce qui concerne l'information d'ordre ne sont pas encore déterminés : elles provoquent un désavantage ou bien elles n'ont aucun effet. L'objectif de cette recherche était de déterminer l'impact des connaissances sémantiques sur le rappel de l'information d'ordre à court terme, et plus précisément de montrer que la prise en compte de leur structure peut influencer positivement ce rappel. Pour cela, une tâche de rappel sériel immédiat est proposée portant sur différents facteurs sémantiques et leur organisation existante en mémoire à long terme. Sept expériences, dont 3 ont fait l'objet de réplication, ont été réalisées : les quatre premières portent sur des associations thématiques, la cinquième tente de donner une organisation aux listes catégorielles utilisées classiquement, et les deux dernières portent sur les scripts, information qui accorde un rôle prépondérant à l'ordre. Nos résultats mettent en évidence que : 1) la présence d'une organisation, correspondant à celle de la mémoire à long terme, dans les listes sémantiques améliore le rappel de l'ordre, 2) la récupération d'un item est basée sur les liens associatifs inter-items, contrairement aux modèles de Saint-Aubin, Ouellette et Poirier (2005) et Haarmann et Usher (2001), 3) l'intervention des connaissances sémantiques dans le fonctionnement de la mémoire à court terme se fait dès l'encodage, contrairement au modèle de Saint-Aubin, Ouellette et Poirier, (2005)

Depuis maintenant plus d'un siècle, le rappel sériel immédiat inversé jour un rôle critique en psychologie clinique, en neuropsychologie et en recherche fondamentale. Toutefois, malgré l'importance du rappel sériel immédiat inversé par une vaste communauté de professionnels et de chercheurs, les processus sollicités par le rappel inversé sont toujours méconnus. La présente thèse se veut une réponse à cette lacune en examinant les processus sollicités par le rappel inversé. Cette thèse comprend trois manuscrits. Le premier présente un examen systématique de l'implication des représentations visuospatiales en rappel inversé. Une nouvelle hypothèse quant aux processus mnésiques sollicités en rappel inversé est proposée dans le second manuscrit et systématiquement mise à l'épreuve dans le deuxième et troisième manuscrit. Plus précisément, le premier manuscrit traite de l'une des hypothèses dominantes du rappel inversé, soit l'hypothèse des représentations visuospatiales. Selon cette hypothèse, alors que le rappel direct, c'est-à-dire du premier au dernier item, pour l'information verbale repose sur des représentations phonologiques, le rappel inversé reposerait sur des représentations visuospatiales. Cette hypothèse est examinée avec une procédure de double tâche dans laquelle la frappe cadencée et du bruit dynamique visuel sont utilisés comme tâches interférentes. Il s'agit de tâches connues pour leur effet délétère sélectif sur les représentations visuospatiales. La tâche interférente est introduite à l'encodage ou lors du rappel des items. Dans les quatre premières expériences, la direction du rappel est seulement connue après la présentation des items, alors que dans la cinquième et dernière expérience la direction du rappel est seulement connue après la présentation des items, alors que dans la cinquième et dernière expérience la direction du rappel est connue avant la présentation des items. Tel que prédit par l'hypothèse des représentations visuospatiales, l'effet délétère de la frappe cadencée est plus important en rappel inversé qu'en rappel direct lorsque cette tâche interférente est introduite lors du rappel. Toutefois, contrairement à l'hypothèse des représentations visuospatiales, ce patron de résultats est uniquement observé lorsque la direction du rappel est révélée avant la présentation des items. Afin de rendre compte de l'ensemble des résultats, une modification est apportée à l'hypothèse des représentations visuospatiales. Dans le deuxième manuscrit, une nouvelle hypothèse du rappel inversé est proposée. Il s'agit plus spécifiquement de l'hypothèse de l'appariement encodage-récupération. Cette hypothèse incorpore les éléments clés de la version modifiée de l'hypothèse des représentations visuospatiales du premier manuscrit et de l'hypothèse du compromis item-ordre. Plus précisément, cette nouvelle hypothèse suggère que la modalité de réponse et la connaissance de la direction du rappel influencent la disponibilité des représentations visuospatiales et le traitement de l'information relative aux items et à l'ordre. Cette hypothèse est examinée à l'aide de deux expériences dans lesquelles la direction du rappel (rappel direct, rappel inversé), la présence de stimuli verbaux non pertinents (contrôle, stimuli verbaux non pertinents), la modalité de réponse (manuelle, verbale), et la connaissance de la direction du rappel sont manipulées. Les résultats révèlent un patron complexe d'interactions entre ces facteurs qui s'avère en tous points conforme aux prédictions du modèle. Le troisième manuscrit poursuit l'examen de l'hypothèse de l'appariement encodage-récupération. Plus particulièrement, à l'aide d'une série de trois expériences, la prédiction selon laquelle la taille d'un effet en rappel inversé, relativement au rappel direct, va varier en fonction de la disponibilité des représentations visuospatiales est examinée. Les résultats sont conformes à l'hypothèse de l'appariement encodage-récupération qui prédit correctement quand et comment la connaissance de la direction du rappel influence la performance en rappel inversé relativement au rappel direct. En somme, la thèse montre que l'hypothèse de l'appariement encodage-récupération permet de rendre compte de l'ensemble des résultats observés en rappel inversé à court terme. In addition, perhaps this interest in our historical past suggests that psycholinguistics is at a critical stage in its development. There are many scholars who believe that this critical stage manifests itself primarily in a search for a new paradigm. It would seem only reasonable to suggest that when members of a profession are search ing for something new, more than likely they will take time to reflect on the past in the hope that it will facilitate the fulfillment of their quest. This book as such reflects a wide-ranging search for historical roots over a millenium of research in the psychology of language and thought. Furthermore, it also reflects an attempt to open the context by introducing the broader perspectives of the history of ideas and the history of science together with their reassessment of the method of science motivated from within psychology itself.
