Book Exploiting Environment Configurability in Reinforcement Learning

Download or read book Exploiting Environment Configurability in Reinforcement Learning written by A.M. Metelli and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2022-12-07 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, Reinforcement Learning (RL) has emerged as an effective approach to address complex control tasks. In a Markov Decision Process (MDP), the framework typically used, the environment is assumed to be a fixed entity that cannot be altered externally. There are, however, several real-world scenarios in which the environment can be modified to a limited extent. This book, Exploiting Environment Configurability in Reinforcement Learning, aims to formalize and study diverse aspects of environment configuration. In a traditional MDP, the agent perceives the state of the environment and performs actions. As a consequence, the environment transitions to a new state and generates a reward signal. The goal of the agent consists of learning a policy, i.e., a prescription of actions that maximize the long-term reward. Although environment configuration arises quite often in real applications, the topic is very little explored in the literature. The contributions in the book are theoretical, algorithmic, and experimental and can be broadly subdivided into three parts. The first part introduces the novel formalism of Configurable Markov Decision Processes (Conf-MDPs) to model the configuration opportunities offered by the environment. The second part of the book focuses on the cooperative Conf-MDP setting and investigates the problem of finding an agent policy and an environment configuration that jointly optimize the long-term reward. The third part addresses two specific applications of the Conf-MDP framework: policy space identification and control frequency adaptation. The book will be of interest to all those using RL as part of their work.

Book Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence

Download or read book Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence written by P. Hitzler and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If only it were possible to develop automated and trainable neural systems that could justify their behavior in a way that could be interpreted by humans like a symbolic system. The field of Neurosymbolic AI aims to combine two disparate approaches to AI; symbolic reasoning and neural or connectionist approaches such as Deep Learning. The quest to unite these two types of AI has led to the development of many innovative techniques which extend the boundaries of both disciplines. This book, Compendium of Neurosymbolic Artificial Intelligence, presents 30 invited papers which explore various approaches to defining and developing a successful system to combine these two methods. Each strategy has clear advantages and disadvantages, with the aim of most being to find some useful middle ground between the rigid transparency of symbolic systems and the more flexible yet highly opaque neural applications. The papers are organized by theme, with the first four being overviews or surveys of the field. These are followed by papers covering neurosymbolic reasoning; neurosymbolic architectures; various aspects of Deep Learning; and finally two chapters on natural language processing. All papers were reviewed internally before publication. The book is intended to follow and extend the work of the previous book, Neuro-symbolic artificial intelligence: The state of the art (IOS Press; 2021) which laid out the breadth of the field at that time. Neurosymbolic AI is a young field which is still being actively defined and explored, and this book will be of interest to those working in AI research and development.

Book Multipath Exploitation for Emitter Localization using Ray Tracing Fingerprints and Machine Learning

Download or read book Multipath Exploitation for Emitter Localization using Ray Tracing Fingerprints and Machine Learning written by Marcelo Nogueira de Sousa and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The precise localization of radio frequency (RF) transmitters in outdoor environments has been an important research topic in various fields for several years. Nowadays, the functionalities of many electronic devices are based on the position data of a radiofrequency transmitter using a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Spatially separated sensor scan measure the signal from the transmitter and estimate its location using parameters such as Time Of Arrival (ToA), Time Difference Of Arrival (TDOA), Received Signal Strength (RSS) or Direction Of Arrival (DOA). However, certain obstacles in the environment can cause reflection, diffraction, or scattering of the signal. This so called multipath effect affects the measurements for the precise location of the transmitter. Previous studies have discarded multipath information and have not considered it valuable for locating the transmitter. Some studies used ray tracing (RT) to create position fingerprints, without reference measurements, in a simulated scenario. Others tested this concept with real measurement data, but this proved to be a more cumbersome method due to practical problems in the outdoor environment. This thesis exploits the concept of Channel Impulse Response (CIR) to address the problem of precision in outdoor localization environments affected by multipath. The study aims to fill the research gap by combining multipath information from simulation with real measurements in a machine learning framework. The research question was whether the localization could be improved by combining real measurements with simulations. We propose a method that uses the multipath fingerprint information from RT simulation with reference transmitters to improve the location estimation. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we implemented a TDoA location system enhanced with multipath fingerprints in an outdoor scenario. This thesis investigated suburban and rural areas using well-defined reflective components to characterize the localization multipath pattern. The results confirm the possibility of using multipath effects with real measurements to enhance the localization in outdoor situations. Instead of rejecting the multipath information, we can use them as an additional source of information.
