Book Economic Analysis of Provincial Land Use Policies in Ontario

Download or read book Economic Analysis of Provincial Land Use Policies in Ontario written by Mark w. Frankena and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1980-12-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyses the provincial government's role in municipal and regional planning. The conversion of farmland to urban and other uses is discussed, as are the issues raised by the reports of the Ontario Planning Act Review Committee and the Federal/Provincial Task Force on the Supply and Price of Serviced Residential Land and the province's Green Paper on Planning for Agriculture. The authors criticize the government's failure to conduct cost-benefit studies before setting up planning programs and show that there is little factual basis for recent alarm over the disappearance of farmland. Data gathered here for the first time show that the conversion of agricultural land to built-up urban use and non-farm rural residential use in Ontario has been taking place quite slowly in view of the rate of productivity increase in agriculture, the stock of agricultural land, and the decline in the acreage of census farms. Economists will find in this book a useful survey of recent trends and policies. Planners, policy-makers, and students will welcome this detailed case study of how economic analysis ought to be used in formulating land use policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Carleton Library Series returns this classic in political economy and Canadian historical writing to print, with a new introduction by Robert Young. The Politics of Development reveals the full extent of state involvement in the exploitation of natural resources in the province of Ontario and the reciprocal impact resource development has had in shaping politics in the province. H.V. Nelles offers a revised staples interpretation, exposing the resource politics at the heart of central Canadian economic development. He explains the business history of the forestry and mining industries from the mid-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth century, stressing the importance of public policy in their development. He offers a definitive interpretation of the emergence, development, and political dynamics of public ownership within the hydro-electric sector. Considered one of the seminal works on Canadian political economy The Politics of Development still has important things to say about public policy and will be of interest to historians, political scientists, economists, and those interested in environmental history.

Book Natural Resources In U S Canadian Relations Volume 1

Download or read book Natural Resources In U S Canadian Relations Volume 1 written by Carl E. Beigie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined efforts of the World Peace Foundation, the C. D. Howe Research Institute, and the Centre Québécois de Relations Internationales have culminated in a comprehensive three-volume study of critical U.S.-Canadian resource issues. Motivated initially by the tensions of the mid-1970s and by U.S. concern about the actions of its major non-energy resource supplier, Canada, the study grew to examine bilateral resource issues from a long-term perspective. The first volume traces the background of the U.S.-Canadian resource connection, analyzes the evolution of resource policies and processes in the two countries, and introduces the domestic and bilateral policy issues that have emerged regarding natural resource development and trade. Contributors examine the possibility that Canada might seek to exploit its resource position by taking actions detrimental to U.S. interests. Volume II, Patterns and Trends in Resource Supplies and Policies, presents detailed case studies of nine specific resources of interest to both countries. Volume III, Perspectives, Prospects, and Policy Options, examines the resource sector from the perspectives of corporate investors, workers, and environmentalists and concludes with a review of policy options and prospects for the bilateral relationship.
