Book Diseases of the Hearts Their Cures

Download or read book Diseases of the Hearts Their Cures written by Ibn Taymiyyah and published by Student Study Guides. This book was released on 2018-09-28 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actions are distinguished, one from the other, with respect to their excellence in the Sight of Allah in accordance with the condition of the heart, not by their number or form, but rather due to the strength of the caller, his truthfulness, his sincerity and the extent to which he prefer Allah over himself. The heart has been singled out for this because it is the leader of the body, and through the purification of the leader the subjects become purified, and with his corruption they become corrupted. So if you, Observant of Allah, wish to cure your hear then it is upon you to be truthful with regards to seeking refuge with Allah and putting your trust in Him, to pray a great deal of supererogatory prayers, to perform the actions of obedience to Allah frequently, to pray the night prayer while the people are sleeping, and to treat your heart by making it continuously stick to the remembrances and by befriending only the righteous and to frequently recite the Quran. And Allah will indeed allow all of this to be preserved by him.

Book The Creed as Symbol

Download or read book The Creed as Symbol written by Nicholas Ayo and published by . This book was released on 1988-12-31 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its probable beginnings as an interrogatory creed for catechumens to its current place in the Sunday liturgy, the Apostoles' Creed has played an integral role in the sacraments of the church. The symbol of faith, as it was called by generations of Christians, was not only a vehicle of orthodox instruction but a profession of faith of profound beauty and meaning to be memorized and pondered for a lifetime. It is this Creed, a lasting achievement of the Christian tradition that Nicholas Ayo, C.S.C., presents to the general reader in The Creed as Symbol. A meditative yet thought-provoking study, this volume presents the Apostles' Creed as more than a basic confession of faith but as a symbol/metaphor of the mystery of God. Ayo holds that the Apostles' Creed is a sacred poem, an ancient psalm, holy and beautiful in its form as well as in its content. Basic literary criticism and linguistics are used to explicate the figurative body of the Creed--its words--as well as the theological meditation of its soul--the mysteries it seeks to teach. And as Ayo balances the study of the medium with the message, he does so with the conviction that the two are inextricably linked together and can never be separated. Ayo divides the Apostoles' Creed into its 12 historically recognized articles, each with its own chapter. In addition to his introduction, Ayo has included a brief history of the Creed's formation, a full summary of the ideas covered, an appendix containing differing versions of the Creed, a bibliography, and complete notes. This work is an ideal companion piece to any student religious text or standing alone, as a parish renewal source book or primary text for catechumens. The Creed as Symbol will enrich anyone's understanding of the Creed, the perennial and core doctrine of Christianity.

Book The Creed

    Book Details:
  • Author : Luke Timothy Johnson
  • Publisher : Image
  • Release : 2007-12-18
  • ISBN : 0307423913
  • Pages : 338 pages

Download or read book The Creed written by Luke Timothy Johnson and published by Image. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoughtful, fully accessible exploration of the creed, the list of beliefs central to the Christian faith, delves into its origins and illuminates the contemporary significance of why it still matters. During services in Christian communities, the members of the congregation stand together to recite the creed, professing in unison the beliefs they share. For most Christians, the creed functions as a sort of “ABC” of what it means to be a Christian and to be part of a worldwide movement. Few people, however, know the source of this litany of beliefs, a topic that is further confused by the fact that there are two different versions: the Apostle’s Creed and the Nicene Creed. In The Creed, Luke Timothy Johnson, a New Testament scholar and Catholic theologian, clarifies the history of the creed, discussing its evolution from the first decades of the Christian Church to the present day. By connecting the deep theological conflicts of the early Church with the conflicts and questions facing Christians today, Johnson shows that faith is a dynamic process, not based on a static set of rules. Written in a clear, graceful style and appropriate for Christians of all denominations, The Creed is destined to become a classic of modern writings on spirituality.

Book Why Creeds and Confessions

Download or read book Why Creeds and Confessions written by Jay Rogers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why a book on the creeds and confessions of the Church? A single book containing the actual texts of the most important creeds of the early Church will not often be found. Out of the multitude of works on the evangelical Christian book market today, those dealing with the creeds of the Church are scarce. This book contains the full texts of the most important creeds of the early Church. The purpose is to put into the reader's hands a book containing the creeds that all Christians throughout the ages - Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Protestant - have believed. When we come to the Reformation period, we will see that the matter of salvation and church government became a matter of debate. However, there has always been a continuous thread of teaching that all Christians have held in common. Why Creeds and Confessions? provides a foundation of biblical orthodoxy as a defense against the false and truly heretical doctrines advanced by the spirit of this age.

Book A Catalogue of Works Pertaining to the Explanation of the Creed in Carolingian Manuscripts

Download or read book A Catalogue of Works Pertaining to the Explanation of the Creed in Carolingian Manuscripts written by and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catalogue identifies works used to explain the creed in Carolingian collection volumes compiled for the instruction of the clergy. It includes both edited and unedited works and some recently edited in a companion volume to this one, Explanationes Symboli aeui Carolini (CC CM, 254). The catalogue shows that the teaching of the creedal faith was assembled from snippets of, or whole, patristic works, homilies, personal professions of faith, and works of many other genres. In the past, we have had little concept of the range of works known to those responsible for teaching the faith at the parish and missionary level of the Carolingian world. In this catalogue crucial attention is paid to the contents of the manuscripts as a whole in which the creed explanation is found and how these collection volumes may have functioned. It is hoped that the manuscript descriptions will be of benefit to students and specialists working on other kinds of texts for the education of the clergy. Dr Susan Keefe is Associate Professor of Church History at Duke Divinity School, Durham, NC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In eight chapters, David Harned explores the theology of the Apostles’ Creed, taking the position that the creed, in fact, provides us with a master image for self-understanding, and that controlling image is “child of God.” The creed is seen as being important for personality formation and the development of “character,” rather than as either a statement of beliefs or a loyalty oath. Harned’s ninth and final chapter is intended for those who wish to pursue further the question of master imagery for the formation of a Christian Sense of Identity.
