Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essays on Wheat: Including the Discovery and Introduction of Marquis Wheat, the Early History of Wheat-Growing in Manitoba, Wheat in Western Canada, the Origin of Red Bobs and Kitchener, and the Wild Wheat of Palestine Marquis Wheat is one of the most valuable food plants in the world. In the year 1917 upwards of bushels of it were raised in North America, and in 1918 upwards of bushels; and, owing to its high yield per acre, it was an important factor in assisting the Allies to overcome the food crisis in the darkest period of the war. The whole of the Marquis Wheat at present in existence originated from a single grain of wheat planted in an experimental plot at Ottawa by Dr. Charles E. Saunders so recently as the spring of 1903. Download or read book Garnet Wheat written by Leonard H. Newman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Garnet Wheat: New Promising Variety of Early Maturing Spring Wheat The history of Garnet wheat is almost an epic in the realm of scientific achievement. It reveals a story of almost half a century of patient but deter mined effort, replete with discouragements and disappointments but rewarded ultimately by definite and indisputable gains. It epitomises the history of wheat-breeding work as conducted at the Central Experimental Farm, Ottawa, during the past forty years and compels an appreciation of the man who con ceived the program of procedure which has meant so much to Canada. To Dr. William Saunders, the first Director of the Federal System and the man to whom we refer, Canada owes a debt she can never repay. To him is due, in large measure, the credit for such epoch making contributions as Marquis wheat and for the lesser though valuable wheat introductions bearing the names Preston, Huron, and Early Riga. Even such subsequent productions as Prelude, Ruby, and Garnet are all founded in part at least upon the former varieties which occupy an important place in their ancestry. The pedigree of Garnet, the subject of our present sketch, is illustrated graphically on the cover of this bulletin. This variety, it will be noted, origin ated from a cross between two other Ottawa-bred varieties known as Preston A and Riga M. This cross was made at Ottawa in 1905 by Dr. Charles Saunders, then Dominion Cerealist. Preston A was a pure line selection from Preston. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • "A dazzling journey across the sciences and humanities in search of deep laws to unite them." —The Wall Street Journal One of our greatest scientists—and the winner of two Pulitzer Prizes for On Human Nature and The Ants—gives us a work of visionary importance that may be the crowning achievement of his career. In Consilience (a word that originally meant "jumping together"), Edward O. Wilson renews the Enlightenment's search for a unified theory of knowledge in disciplines that range from physics to biology, the social sciences and the humanities. Using the natural sciences as his model, Wilson forges dramatic links between fields. He explores the chemistry of the mind and the genetic bases of culture. He postulates the biological principles underlying works of art from cave-drawings to Lolita. Presenting the latest findings in prose of wonderful clarity and oratorical eloquence, and synthesizing it into a dazzling whole, Consilience is science in the path-clearing traditions of Newton, Einstein, and Richard Feynman.

Book excerpt: A powerful and impassioned historical account of the largest successful revolt by enslaved people in history: the Haitian Revolution of 1791–1803 “One of the seminal texts about the history of slavery and abolition.... Provocative and empowering.” —The New York Times Book Review The Black Jacobins, by Trinidadian historian C. L. R. James, was the first major analysis of the uprising that began in the wake of the storming of the Bastille in France and became the model for liberation movements from Africa to Cuba. It is the story of the French colony of San Domingo, a place where the brutality of plantation owners toward enslaved people was horrifyingly severe. And it is the story of a charismatic and barely literate enslaved person named Toussaint L’Ouverture, who successfully led the Black people of San Domingo against successive invasions by overwhelming French, Spanish, and English forces—and in the process helped form the first independent post-colonial nation in the Caribbean. With a new introduction (2023) by Professor David Scott.

Book All Incomplete

  • Author : Stefano Harney
  • Publisher : Minor Compositions
  • Release : 2021-04-29
  • ISBN : 9781570273780
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book All Incomplete written by Stefano Harney and published by Minor Compositions. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on the ideas Harney and Moten developed in The Undercommons, All Incomplete extends the critical investigation of logistics, individuation and sovereignty. It reflects their chances to travel, listen and deepen their commitment to and claim upon partiality. All Incomplete studies the history of a preference for the force and ground and underground of social existence. Engaging a vibrant constellation of thought that includes the work of Amilcar Cabral, Erica Edwards, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Cedric Robinson, Walter Rodney, Hortense Spillers and many others, Harney and Moten seek to share and understand that preference. In so doing, Moten and Harney hope to have forged what Manolo Callahan, echoing Ivan Illich, calls a convivial tool that - despite the temptation to improve and demand, develop and govern, separate and grasp - helps us renew our habits of assembly. All Incomplete features the work of award winning photographer Zun Lee, exploring and celebrating the everyday spaces of Black sociality, intimacy, belonging, and insurgency, and a preface by Denise Ferreira da Silva.
