Book Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers

Download or read book Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers written by Shulian Zhang and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers generally emit radiation, which is either simply linearly polarized or unpolarized and stochastically polarized. Contrary to these common lasers, all orthogonally polarized lasers simultaneously emit radiation in two linear polarization states, both exactly orthogonally oriented to each other. Due to this orthogonality, both polarized components in the beam are independent of each other to a high degree and the studies presented in this book make clear that this feature can give a strong advantage in certain laser applications, for instance in high-precision measurements. Orthogonal Polarization in Lasers: Physical Phenomena and Engineering Applications summarizes the basics and advanced research results of orthogonally polarized lasers, birefringence laser cavities, and their applications. The authors include a number of figures, experimental designs, and measurement curves to enable the reader to not only learn the basic principles and technologies but also to understand many applications in modern engineering and to start their own R&D projects. The book covers polarization effects, which are of fundamental importance across various disciplines of science and technology. Includes a number of figures, experimental designs, and measurement curves to help readers learn the basic principles and start their own R&D projects. Discusses many types of relevant lasers (helium/neon lasers, ND:YAG lasers, semiconductor lasers, laser diodes). Written by multiply-published authors in the subject area. Contains material useful for metrology applications. This book is intended for use by researchers, postgraduates, and engineers working in laser science, optics, and measurement and testing, while senior undergraduate students working in optical and laser science can use the book for advanced understanding in their field.

This book was released on 1996-08-31 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute "Biomedical Optical Instrumentation and Laser Assisted Biotechnology" was held November 10-22, 1995 in Erice, Sicily. This was the 19 th conference organized by the International School of Quantum Electronics, under the auspices of the "Ettore Majorana" Center for Scientific Culture. The contributions presented at the Institute are written as extended, review-like papers to provide a broad and representative coverage of the fields of laser techniques, optoelectronics systems for medical diagnosis, and light and laser applications to Biology and Medicine. The aim of the Institute was to bring together some of the world's acknowledged scientists and clinicians that belong to different disciplines and consequently do not usually meet, but who have as a common link the use of optoelectronics instrumentation, techniques and procedures. Most of the lecturers attended all the lectures and devoted their spare hours to stimulating discussions. We would like to thank them all for their admirable contributions. The Institute also took advantage of a very active audience; most of the participants were active researchers in the field and contributed with discussions and seminars. Some of these seminars are also included in these Proceedings. The Institute was an important opportunity to discuss latest developments and emerging perspectives on the use of laser sources and optoelectronic techniques for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.

Book Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology

Download or read book Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology written by Myron Wolbarsht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the material in this book represents a departure from that presented earlier in the series. Volumes 1 and 2 presented almost exclusively reviews by American authors of American work. As science is international, it is rare that in two different parts of the world large groups of researchers in the same field remain relatively uninformed about each other's work. However, during the time since the initiation of this series, a large body of research has grown up in Russia that is almost unknown outside, as the original reports are largely untranslated. For this reason, an extensive review is presented here of the entire field of Russian applications of lasers in medicine and biology. Although the author, Dr. Gamaleya, has not worked directly with many of the applications, he has a general background in laser usage and has received much help from his colleagues in assembling the material. His review is restricted to Russian research. This does not mean that he is unaware of Western advances, rather that he has restricted his material to the parts that are peculiarly Russian or are significant confir mations of earlier work. Some of the Russian developments are quite novel and will certainly suggest to the careful reader new interpretations of old data, and possibly even new lines of research. The mechanisms proposed for the interaction of the high-intensity monochromatic light from lasers with biological material continue to grow in complexity.

Book Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology

Download or read book Laser Applications in Medicine and Biology written by M.L. Wolbarsht and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use oflasers has entered almost every facet of medicine and biology. Therefore, it is to be expected that the reviews contained in this vol urne will reflect this diversity. As dinical acceptance has grown with various diagnostic and therapeutic applications, so has the need for a more thorough understanding of the theoretical background for each. This is especially true where a correlation is to be made between the theoretical background and the experimental data. It is only in this way that we can attain the optimal form of any therapy. The basic coupling ofenergy into biological tissue and its conversion into heat is characterized by many parameters. One ofthe most important is pulse duration. The review by Bimgruber in Chapter 6 shows how our knowledge ofthis parameter has been extended. The need for a more basic understanding of the interaction of electromagnetic energy with various kinds of materials has led to investigations on the nature of plasmas their stability and instability, and how theyexist. Docchio reviews the factors that cause them to occur at a specific locale and then to move away from that site. The availabilityofmany types ofoptical fibers has extended our ability to deliver laser energy from various types oflasers into almost anyselected location. This is particularly useful in medicine, where less invasive ap proaches to surgery and diagnosis are always helpful. However, as Rol and his colleagues explain, the power-handling capabilities ofoptical fibers limit many applications, particularly for short-duration, high-peak-power laser pulses.
