Book Experiments to Determine Drift Patterns and Rates of Recovery of Sea Otter Carcasses Following the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill

Download or read book Experiments to Determine Drift Patterns and Rates of Recovery of Sea Otter Carcasses Following the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill written by Angela Maria Doroff and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first of two experiments, the probability of carcass recovery was assessed during sea otter rescue and carcass recovery activities. Twenty-five previously recovered carcasses were marked with flipper tags near northern Kodiak Island between May 27 and June 3, 1989. In the second study, 30 radio-monitored floats were deployed in early summer 1990 in Prince William Sound to assess drift of floating sea otter carcasses. The experiments suggest many more sea otters may have died from the Exxon Valdez oils spill than were recovered.

Book Marine Mammals and the Exxon Valdez

Download or read book Marine Mammals and the Exxon Valdez written by Thomas R. Loughlin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil spill disaster that occurred when the Exxon Valdez ran aground has become part of the iconography of ecological disaster. This book synthesizes previously confidential data only recently released by the U.S. government. The data concerns the effects of this nightmarish spill on marine mammals, such as sea otters, harbor seals, killer whales, and humpback whales. Because many of the book's contributors were on site within 24 hours of this 11 million gallon catastrophe, the book is a unique longitudinal study of the demise of an ecosystem due to a single acute environmental perturbation. These certain-to-be-influential results reported here should assist marine biologists, pathologists, toxicologists, environmentalists, engineers, and coastal planners in assessing the nature of this now legendary disaster.

Download or read book Long term Monitoring Lingering Oil Evaluating Chronic Exposure of Harlequin Ducks and Sea Otters to Lingering Exxon Valdez Oil in Western Prince William Sound written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part one of the report describes the study of cytochrome P4501A induction in harlequin ducks wintering in Prince William Sound over time as it relates to exposure to residual oil from the Exxon Valdez oil spill. Part two of the report describes the study of gene transcription patterns in sea otters in western Prince William Sound in order to determine the status of sea otter recovery after the 1989 oil spill.

Book Oil in the Sea III

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2003-03-14
  • ISBN : 0309084385

Download or read book Oil in the Sea III written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1970s, experts have recognized that petroleum pollutants were being discharged in marine waters worldwide, from oil spills, vessel operations, and land-based sources. Public attention to oil spills has forced improvements. Still, a considerable amount of oil is discharged yearly into sensitive coastal environments. Oil in the Sea provides the best available estimate of oil pollutant discharge into marine waters, including an evaluation of the methods for assessing petroleum load and a discussion about the concerns these loads represent. Featuring close-up looks at the Exxon Valdez spill and other notable events, the book identifies important research questions and makes recommendations for better analysis ofâ€"and more effective measures againstâ€"pollutant discharge. The book discusses: Inputâ€"where the discharges come from, including the role of two-stroke engines used on recreational craft. Behavior or fateâ€"how oil is affected by processes such as evaporation as it moves through the marine environment. Effectsâ€"what we know about the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on marine organisms and ecosystems. Providing a needed update on a problem of international importance, this book will be of interest to energy policy makers, industry officials and managers, engineers and researchers, and advocates for the marine environment.

Book Patterns and Processes of Population Change in Selected Nearshore Vertebrate Predators

Download or read book Patterns and Processes of Population Change in Selected Nearshore Vertebrate Predators written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study estimated and compared sea otter populations over time between oiled and unoiled areas in Prince William Sound, collected age at death data from sea otter carcasses found on beaches in the western portion of the Sound, and measured and compared hydrocarbon levels in blood samples from sea otters in oiled and unoiled areas of the Sound. Green sea urchin abundance and class size was looked at as a measure of sea otter recovery. Harlequin duck populations were tracked to determine the rate of recovery since the Exxon Valdez oil spill, and captive populations at the Alaska SeaLife Center were studied to determine behavioral and CYP1A responses to oil exposure.
