Download or read book The Invention of Telepathy 1870 1901 written by Roger Luckhurst and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Invention of Telepathy explores one of the enduring concepts to emerge from the late nineteenth century. Telepathy was coined by Frederic Myers in 1882. He defined it as 'the communication of any kind from one mind to another, independently of the recognised channels of sense'. By 1901 it had become a disputed phenomenon amongst physical scientists yet was the 'royal road' to the unconscious mind. Telepathy was discussed by eminent men and women of the day, including Sigmund Freud, Thomas Huxley, Henry and William James, Mary Kingsley, Andrew Lang, Vernon Lee, W.T. Stead, and Oscar Wilde. Did telepathy signal evolutionary advance or possible decline? Could it be a means of binding the Empire closer together, or was it used by natives to subvert imperial communications? Were women more sensitive than men, and if so why? Roger Luckhurst investigates these questions in a study that mixes history of science with cultural history and literary analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “TELEPATHY - The Theory, the Facts & the Proof” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. Extract: “Many persons who are interested in the phenomena of Telepathy, and who accept the proofs offered by its advocates, seem to regard these phenomena as quite ordinary and as fully in accord with the more familiar manifestations of Nature’s forces. We frequently hear Telepathy compared to the manifestation of electricity, particularly in the phase of wireless telegraphy. But the matter is not so simple as this—it cannot be lightly dismissed or placed in any ordinary category. It is, scientifically, sui generis—in a class by itself; unique; peculiar. While we shall not attempt to put forward any special hypothesis at this point, we invite you to consider the following statement from the lips of an eminent English statesman, himself an earnest investigator of Telepathy. After reading his statement, you will begin to appreciate the full nature of the problem confronting those who, while admitting the proofs of Telepathy, would seek to account for the same by scientific principles.” William Walker Atkinson (1862-1932) was a prolific writer. His works treat themes related to the mental world, occultism, divination, psychic reality, and mankind's nature. They constitute a basis for what Atkinson called "New Psychology" or "New Thought".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The power of thought? How is it possible? Every thought contains within it the power of thought - your thoughts, too. You only need to know how to recognise, strengthen and apply the power of thought. The secret of telepathy. The laws of the transfer of thought. The 7 lessons. Imagine welcoming a visitor, who has arrived only because you have personally chosen and invited them to visit you by the sole power of your thoughts. Numerous opportunities with friends or strangers, anywhere you like, will confirm your "fantastic" ability. Through the experiments provided, you will experience the mysterious power of telepathy and the influence of thought. SAMPLE EXCERPT: AN EXPERIMENT ON THE STREET... Excerpt from the chapter "A simple experiment on the street" in the third instructional part (page 16): ... if you would like to test the power of your thoughts using the technique of building up thoughts - as explained clearly in the 2nd part - carry out the following experiment out on the street: Look calmly and fixedly at the back of the head of a person walking in front of you (at a distance of between 6 metres and 25 metres). Together with the thoughts that you have already built up inside yourself, visualise the person in front of you turning their head towards you. The more you have built up your thoughts, and the more vividly and strongly you imagine the person to be turning their head, the faster your success will be. Don't make any noise whatsoever. No coughing or clearing your throat, and don't make your footsteps become heavier. The connection may only take place through your thoughts and through your imagination ... Try it yourself and you'll be amazed as, with a sufficient build-up of thoughts, this and similar experiments have a high rate of success.
Download or read book Mind to Mind written by Rene Warcollier and published by Studies in Consciousness. This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telepathy includes the communication of emotions, ideas, mental images, sensations or words from one individual to another without the help of the senses... In the early part of the twentieth century, a chemical engineer named Rene Warcollier devised and conducted a series of experiments in telepathic communication. The participants sought to transmit drawings, at varying distances and using only the power of the mind, to subjects who would record their impressions on paper. In Mind to Mind, Warcollier describes these experiments in precise detail, including many of the transmitted drawings and recorded impressions. His research revealed surprising parallels between the principles of extrasensory communication and those of modern psychology.
Download or read book ESP and Psychokinesis written by Stephen E. Braude and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work was the first sustained philosophical study of psychic phenomena to follow C.D. Broad's LECTURES ON PSYCHICAL RESEARCH, written nearly twenty years earlier. The author clearly defines the categories of psychic phenomena, surveys the most compelling experimental data, and traces their implications for the philosophy of science and the philosophy of mind. He considers carefully the abstract presuppositions underlying leading theories of psychic phenomena, and he offers bold criticisms of both mechanistic analyses of communication and psychophysical identity theories. In addition, he challenges the received view that experimental repeatability is the paramount criterion for evaluating parapsychological research, and he exposes the deep confusions underlying Jung's concept of synchronicity.
Download or read book Dream Telepathy written by Montague Ullman and published by Hampton Roads Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in dreams is as old as humankind. Interest in dream telepathy -- the idea that we can influence others' dreams and communicate through them -- has been around almost as long. Dream Telepathy is Montague Ullman and Stanley Krippner's 1973 report on their ten years of research and experimentation with the human power to communicate across the barriers of time, space, and sleep. Ullman, a psychoanalyst, and Krippner, a psychologist, were the heads of the dream-research team at Maimonides Medical Center's Dream Laboratory in New York throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. Using graduate student researchers and volunteer subjects from the community, Ullman and Krippner engineered experiments wherein the researchers focused on a selection of art prints while, in another room, the subjects slept and dreamt. Meeting with varying degrees of success depending upon the research pair, subjects reported astonishing things, often dreaming their own uncannily accurate interpretation of the artistic scene the researchers were attempting to project to them. Dream Telepathy proposes the invaluable theoretical implications of such experimentation, and presupposes the use of dream telepathy in all areas of paranormal studies.
Download or read book Homo Sovieticus written by Wladimir Velminski and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-02-10 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How Soviet scientists and pseudoscientists pursued telepathic research, cybernetic simulations, and mass hyptonism over television to control the minds of citizens. In October 1989, as the Cold War was ending and the Berlin Wall about to crumble, television viewers in the Soviet Union tuned in to the first of a series of unusual broadcasts. “Relax, let your thoughts wander free...” intoned the host, the physician and clinical psychotherapist Anatoly Mikhailovich Kashpirovsky. Moscow's Channel One was attempting mass hypnosis over television, a therapeutic session aimed at reassuring citizens panicked over the ongoing political upheaval—and aimed at taking control of their responses to it. Incredibly enough, this last-ditch effort to rally the citizenry was the culmination of decades of official telepathic research, cybernetic simulations, and coded messages undertaken to reinforce ideological conformity. In Homo Sovieticus, the art and media scholar Wladimir Velminski explores these scientific and pseudoscientific efforts at mind control. In a fascinating series of anecdotes, Velminski describes such phenomena as the conflation of mental energy and electromagnetism; the investigation of aura fields through the “Aurathron”; a laboratory that practiced mind control methods on dogs; and attempts to calibrate the thought processes of laborers. “Scientific” diagrams from the period accompany the text. In all of the experimental methods for implanting thoughts into a brain, Velminski finds political and metaphorical contaminations. These apparently technological experiments in telepathy and telekinesis were deployed for purely political purposes.
Download or read book Twin Telepathy written by Guy L. Playfair and published by . This book was released on 2012-03 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a 'special connection' between twins? Can they read each other's minds? Are they telepathic? These questions are often asked, but have never been convincingly answered until now. The author became interested in the subject when he was given vivid first-hand testimony of how a man whose twin brother had been shot dead had reacted several miles away at the exact time. This prompted him to embark on a thorough search of the literature and collect accounts of similar examples of apparent telepathy, some dating back to the 18th century, to question numerous twins regarding their own experiences, to compile a substantial file of case histories, and eventually to help set up properly controlled scientific experiments in which telepathy could be seen to take place on a polygraph chart, two of which have now been published in peer-reviewed journals. As he makes clear in this ground-breaking book, the first ever to explore the 'special twin connection' in detail, the answer is simple: some twins are telepathy-prone and some, probably the majority, are not. How can this be, you might wonder? Aren't all identical twins supposed to be identical in all respects? They are not. The fact is that, as Orwell might have put it, some twins are more identical than others. What seems to make the difference is exactly when division of the fertilized zygote (egg) takes place. This can take place almost immediately, or up to twelve days later. Without going into detail here, what this means is that 'late splitters' develop extremely close bonds after birth, bonds that can last a lifetime, whereas 'early splitters' become more independent, and regard their twins just like an ordinary brother or sister. Sure enough, when experiments were carried out in London and Copenhagen, on each occasion it was a late-splitting pair who showed the clearest evidence for telepathy on their polygraph charts. The often heard critical complaint that here is no repeatable experiment for any kind of psychic effect is no longer true. This new revised and updated edition contains the most comprehensive survey yet written on the history of research into twin telepathy. The author explains why experiments have generally been unsuccessful in the past, and why those that he helped design have been consistently successful, and point the way ahead for future researchers. He also explains that a better understanding of the special twin connection is of more than academic interest, especially to parents, some of whom already know that it can save lives and has already done so. Earlier editions of this book were well received by such authorities as psychologist Stanley Krippner, a former president of the Parapsychological Association, for whom it 'reads like an intriguing detective story', and Rupert Sheldrake, who has contributed a Foreword in which he states: 'For many years I have been looking in vain for authoritative research on this intriguing subject. At last I have found it, in this book'. Colin Wilson, in his Introduction predicts that the book 'will obviously become a classic of psychical research.'
