Book Experiments With Fallow in North Central Montana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experiments With Fallow in North Central Montana Classic Reprint written by George Walter Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments With Fallow in North-Central Montana The yields Of oats and winter wheat after green-manure crops were approximately half those after fallow. The average yields after field peas as a green - manure crop were slightly more than those fol lowing either winter rye or Sweet clover as green manures. Yields immediately following green-manure crops were much less profitable than those from fallow. The yield of winter wheat has averaged about the same from fallow plowed in the fall and left rough the first winter as from that plowed in May. Fallow lowed in the fall and immediately cultivated gave lighter yields t an that plowed in the fall and left rough the first winter. Fallow plowed In July Showed consistently lighter yields than that plowed in May. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ... should have gone far to establish the opinion that arable farming may still be carried on at a profit. Such a conclusion is scarcely warranted by experience, chiefly because this crop is particularly liable to complete failure, as, for example, was the case SHOULD FARM-YARD MANURE BE CHARGED? 133 so recently as 1887. A heavy crop of roots may be highly profitable, a medium crop may leave the land somewhat in debt, and a failing crop may entail a heavy expenditure. It is therefore impossible to say in the abstract whether roots should be regarded as profitable or the reverse. Another difficulty arises with reference to the estimate put upon the cost of the farm-yard manure. But farm-yard manure is seldom bought, and is made from the straw, hay, and roots, bred on the holding, enriched by cake and purchased corn. If farm-yard manure is valued and charged against the turnip crop, it is only fair to credit back the straw as part of the proceeds of corn-growing, and thus a second fictitious valuation is introduced, as straw is seldom actually sold. It may, indeed, be held that if farm-yard manure is charged against the root crop, the root crop ought to be valued at market price instead of at consuming price. In other words, if the farmer purchases farm-yard manure for his root crop, he might be considered as entitled to sell the crop. We therefore conclude that farm-yard manure should not be valued as a cost against the root crop, but that the labour thereon should be so charged, and in this conclusion we are supported by the usual course of valuations between outgoing and incoming tenants. On this understanding we should be content to value both straw and roots at a consuming price only. The cost of root cultivation varies, first, as between...

Book Crop Rotation Experiments in the Ohio Valley 1925 1936 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Crop Rotation Experiments in the Ohio Valley 1925 1936 Classic Reprint written by Theodore Clinton McIlvaine and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crop Rotation Experiments in the Ohio Valley (1925-1936) For centuries men have recommended the practice of alter nating crops systematically. Early agriculturists noted that the practice led to increased yields. Such increases have been found to be due in part to better control Of weeds, insects, and diseases and to better utilization of plant nutrients. It is known, too, that certain rotations will aid in maintaining the supply Of organic matter and nitrogen in the soil and will lessen erosion. However, not all systems of crop rotation are equally desirable. Some rotations may actually bring about soil depletion almost as rapidly as continuous cropping with the same crop, whereas other systems may maintain satisfactory yields with minimum applications Of fertilizer. Book Conservation Agriculture

Download or read book Conservation Agriculture written by L. García-Torres and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In large parts of the developed and developing worlds soil tillage by plough or hoe is the main cause of land degradation leading to stagnating or even declining production levels and increasing production cost. It causes the soil to become more dense and compacted, the organic matter content to be reduced and water runoff and soil erosion to increase. It also leads to droughts becoming more severe and the soil becoming less fertile and less responsive to fertiliser. This book brings together the key notes lectures and other outstanding contributions of the I World Congress on Conservation Agriculture and provides an updated view of the environment and economic advantages of CA and of its implementation in diferent areas of the World.

Book Labor Markets And Agricultural Production

Download or read book Labor Markets And Agricultural Production written by Jan Douwe van der Ploeg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-04-05 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the complex and often contradictory relationships between agricultural production and markets, Labor, Markets, and Agricultural Production examines the micro-macro linkages between farm production, farm labor issues, and the degree of autonomy or dependency vis-Ã -vis markets. By comparing the case of farmers in Peru, generally regarded as peripheral agricultural producers, with that of European farmers able to easily access the centralized markets of the EEC, Dr. van der Ploeg is able to draw general conclusions about the ongoing process of commoditization of agriculture and the roles farmers play in agrarian development.

Book Advances in Soil Science

Download or read book Advances in Soil Science written by and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of Advances in Soil Science is to provide a forum for leading scientists to analyze and summarize the available scientific information on a subject, assessing its importance and identifying additional research needs. A wide array of subjects has been addressed by authors from many countries in the initial ten volumes of the series. The quick acceptance of the series by both authors and readers has been very gratifying and confirms our perception that a need did exist for a medium to fill the gap between the scientific journals and the comprehensive reference books. This volume is the first of the series devoted entirely to a single topic soil degradation. Future volumes will include both single-topic volumes as well as volumes containing reviews of different topics of soil science, as in the case of the first ten volumes. There are increasing concern and attention about managing natural re sources, particularly soil and water. Soil degradation is clearly one of the most pressing problems facing mankind. Although the spotlight regarding soil degradation in recent years has focused on Africa, concern about the degradation of soil and water resources is worldwide. The widespread con cern about global environmental change is also being linked to severe problems of soil degradation. Therefore, we are indeed pleased that the first volume of the series devoted to a single topic addresses such an impor tant issue. The current volume is also the first of the series involving a guest editor.

Book Good Economics for Hard Times

Download or read book Good Economics for Hard Times written by Abhijit V. Banerjee and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winners of the Nobel Prize show how economics, when done right, can help us solve the thorniest social and political problems of our day. Figuring out how to deal with today's critical economic problems is perhaps the great challenge of our time. Much greater than space travel or perhaps even the next revolutionary medical breakthrough, what is at stake is the whole idea of the good life as we have known it. Immigration and inequality, globalization and technological disruption, slowing growth and accelerating climate change--these are sources of great anxiety across the world, from New Delhi and Dakar to Paris and Washington, DC. The resources to address these challenges are there--what we lack are ideas that will help us jump the wall of disagreement and distrust that divides us. If we succeed, history will remember our era with gratitude; if we fail, the potential losses are incalculable. In this revolutionary book, renowned MIT economists Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo take on this challenge, building on cutting-edge research in economics explained with lucidity and grace. Original, provocative, and urgent, Good Economics for Hard Times makes a persuasive case for an intelligent interventionism and a society built on compassion and respect. It is an extraordinary achievement, one that shines a light to help us appreciate and understand our precariously balanced world.
