Book Hydrology of Three Experimental Watersheds in Southern Florida

Download or read book Hydrology of Three Experimental Watersheds in Southern Florida written by William H. Speir and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrology of Three Experimental Watersheds in Southern Florida: A Progress Report A prime purpose of experimental watersheds is to ascertain the change in hydrologic response caused by systematic variations in both land use and drainage. Watershed areas tend to be small for convenience and ease of control. But one should be able to extrapolate and, if necessary, transfer conclusions from small water shed studies to complete river basins. Book Experimental Watershed Liming Study

Download or read book Experimental Watershed Liming Study written by Charles T. Driscoll and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a series of papers summarizing the results of the Experimental Watershed Liming Study (EWLS). The EWLS was initiated in 1989 to investigate the application of calcium carbonate (limestone) to upland and wetland forests as a strategy to mitigate the acidity of lake water and improve fisheries. Woods Lake, in the Adirondack region of New York U. S. A. , is the site of long-term studies of surface water acidification. This whole-ecosystem manipulation was designed to be a comprehensive evaluation of the chemical and biological response of uplands, wetlands and surface waters to calcium carbonate treatment. A multidisciplinary project team conducted this investigation, including researchers from Clarkson University, Cornell University, the Institute for Ecosystem Studies, Smith College, EWLS was conceived by Syracuse University and U. S. Geological Survey. The Bob Brocksen and others from Living Lakes Inc. and Don Porcella of the Electric Power Research Institute. Financial support for the EWLS was provided by Living Lakes Inc. , the Electric Power Research Institute, the Empire State Electric Energy Research Corporation, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U. S. Geological Survey. vii Biogeochemistry 32: 143-174, 1996. © 1996 Kluwer Academic Publishers. Book Watershed Research in the U S Geological Survey

Download or read book Watershed Research in the U S Geological Survey written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-05-09 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Watershed research is conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to expand our understanding of basic hydrologic mechanisms and their responses at the watershed scale and to provide information that serves as the basis for water and environmental management activities carried out largely by other governmental and private entities. The work of the USGS in this area is carried out by its Water Resources Division and occurs in three general program areas: basic research, regional and site assessments, and data collection. These activities are becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of water and environmental management, where contemporary problems are being approached more than ever on an integrated ecosystems or watershed basis and where the underlying physical, chemical, and biological science is complex. Although the value of this type of hydrologic research is well recognized within the USGS, available financial resources to support it remain modest. Thus, this study seeks to help maximize the effectiveness of the agency's work. The study took two years, during which time the committee visited field sites, received briefings, reviewed descriptive materials, deliberated toward conclusions, and wrote this report. Recommendations are intended to assist the USGS in improving its overall strategy for work in this area; descriptions of a number of scientific opportunities are included, and appropriate circumstances for collaboration with and support for others are identified.

Book Integrated Water Resources Research

Download or read book Integrated Water Resources Research written by Jason A. Hubbart and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-05-20 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropogenic and natural disturbances to freshwater quantity and quality are a greater issue for society than ever before. To successfully restore water resources requires understanding the interactions between hydrology, climate, land use, water quality, ecology, and social and economic pressures. This Special Issue of Water includes cutting edge research broadly addressing investigative areas related to experimental study designs and modeling, freshwater pollutants of concern, and human dimensions of water use and management. Results demonstrate the immense, globally transferable value of the experimental watershed approach, the relevance and critical importance of current integrated studies of pollutants of concern, and the imperative to include human sociological and economic processes in water resources investigations. In spite of the latest progress, as demonstrated in this Special Issue, managers remain insufficiently informed to make the best water resource decisions amidst combined influences of land use change, rapid ongoing human population growth, and changing environmental conditions. There is, thus, a persistent need for further advancements in integrated and interdisciplinary research to improve the scientific understanding, management, and future sustainability of water resources.
