In the sixteen years that have elapsed since my last paper was written there has been much further progress in various directions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Suture of Arteries: An Experimental Research The research described in this little book was undertaken in Vienna, and has been accepted for publication by Langenbeck's Archiv. My excuse for issuing it in book form in England is, that very little literature on the subject is available in our language, and that almost entirely in American journals. The revival of the procedure of suture of arteries is due to German surgery, and nearly all recent research on the matter has been done by Continental and American workers. It was however first suggested by an English surgeon, and first carried into effect by one of his colleagues with brilliant results. For the convenience of any taking more than a passing interest in the subject, I have appended a list of references to previous litera ture, which I have endeavoured to make as complete as possible, including both articles dealing with experimental research, and those describing clinical observations. This book was released on 2017-10-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental and Clinical Research Into Certain Problems Relating to Surgical Operations: An Essay Awarded the Alvarenga Prize for 1901 by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia The several subjects comprising this research were suggested by practical experience in the Operating-room. As most of our exact knowledge of human functions has been gained by animal experimentation, it would seem to be safe to apply the laws thus Obtained to surgical prac tice. This is more particularly true of the vascular and the nervous system. Upon the ready and the exact appli cation of such laws depend the immediate results of many Operations. This research extended over three years, during which time the results were clinically compared and applied in an active Operative practice. It was exceedingly gratify ing to note the close correspondence between the phe nomena observed in the operating-room and in the labora tory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Research Into Surgical Shock: An Essay Awarded the Cartwright Prize, for 1897 Considering the great importance of the subject, it is a matter for surprise that there has not as yet been presented, so far as I am aware, an account of any considerable experimental research into surgical Shock. The present research had progressed but little before it became apparent that its scope was so comprehensive, and involved so many unsettled problems in physiology, that a clearly satisfactory termination could not be hoped for. The aim has been to obtain graphic data furnished in the performance of various surgical operations or by the infliction of different injuries. For the sake of clearness certain hypotheses have been advanced in a part of the research, with the understanding that they are subject to future change. In the main I have aimed to obtain the results bearing on the subject, Without always assuming to be able to explain the mechanism of their production. The magnitude of the subject and the great number of unsolved questions of physiology involved must serve as my apology for the incompleteness of the research. All the experiments were performed on unselected dogs, in regular order as they were supplied by the labora tory servant. Book Experimental Research Into the Surgery of the Respiratory System

Download or read book Experimental Research Into the Surgery of the Respiratory System written by George W. Crile and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Research Into the Surgery of the Respiratory System: An Essay Awarded the Nicholas Senn Prize by the American Medical Association for 1898 From clinical observations it is apparent that there are a number of phenomena attending operations and injuries of the thorax and the respiratory tract which are not sufficiently well understood for ready application in surgery. Instead of taking up the subject in a general way, it was thought best to divide it into parts, and to make a research on each subject separately. From the nature of the subjects, some parts overlap others. It has been only within recent years that opportunities have been general for experimental work on that part of physiology which relates so directly to surgery. It has been the aim in this work to dwell upon the subjects of most practical importance, and to elucidate, as far as possible, the practical bearings of the several questions under consideration. It is not intended to be exhaustive on-all the subjects taken up, nor have all the data accumulated in the experiments been recorded in the protocols, as this would involve unnecessary detail. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physiology in Surgical and General Practice The last edition was published just before the war. Needless to say we have learned a great deal in the past five years. Research in pure physiology and its applications to the clinical sciences has fallen principally into the hands of the Americans, whilst the British investigators have devoted themselves especially to problems arising out of the material presented by the wounded in the war. The results of study, observation, and experiment along both these lines are here gathered together. Much of the book is new, but the objects and scope remain as in the preface to the original edition. To make way for additional material considerable sections have been deleted altogether.
