Book An experimental and theoretical study on two phase flow through porous media of tight gas reservoirs

Download or read book An experimental and theoretical study on two phase flow through porous media of tight gas reservoirs written by Hamid Arastoopour and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Task 1, a history match for gas and water production from Travis Peak formation using our numerical simulator was performed. Our sensitivity analysis on the flow and reservoir parameters showed that interfacial forces between gas, water and the porous medium are very sensitive parameters in the prediction of gas and water from gas reservoirs. A physical model with a high level of accuracy in very low flow measurements and two kinds of coreholders was constructed. Based on our petrographic measurements, three categories of tight sands were identified: grain supported pores, slot and solution pores, and matrix supported grains. Gas, liquid and two-phase flow rate data through grain supported pores, and slot and solution pore types of tight sand samples were taken at different overburden pressures and pressure drops. The data were analyzed using non-Darcy equations and the permeability and flow parameters were calculated. A surface capillary pressure between gas and water in the entrance to core samples and inside fractures was discovered. Three two-phase flow regimes were identified. For the first time in the literature, imbibition runs were conducted for tight sand samples. Because several days of time are required for steady state data, a reliable procedure for taking transient data was developed. The transient data will save us a significant amount of time and expense.

Book An Experimental and Theoretical Study on Two Phase Flow Through Porous Media of Tight Gas Reservoir

Download or read book An Experimental and Theoretical Study on Two Phase Flow Through Porous Media of Tight Gas Reservoir written by H. Arastoopour and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under Task 1, a history match for gas and water production from Travis Peak formation using our numerical simulator was performed. Our sensitivity analysis on the flow and reservoir parameters showed that relative and absolute permeability and/or interfacial forces between gas, water and the porous medium are very sensitive parameters in the prediction of gas and water production from gas reservoirs. Capillary pressure and porosity have secondary effects on gas and water production. Futhermore, the location and distribution of the fractures and aquifers and whether or not they are connected to the production zone have significant effect on gas and water production. A physical model was designed, constructed and used to measure two phase flow through tight sand porous media. A high level of accuracy in very low flow measurements is achieved by using a proportioning mercury pump system and two kinds of coreholders, Hassler type and one in which the core sample is encapsulted in layers of epoxy resin and metal alloy. Using Darcy's Law as a tool for the analysis, we obtained the gas and liquid permeability and capillary pressure for SFE no. 3 core sample at different pressure, overburden pressure and flow rate. The initial analysis using our non-Darcy equations showed importance and reliability of the formulation for estimation of permeability.

Book Design and Construction of an Experiment for Two phase Flow in Fractured Porous Media

Download or read book Design and Construction of an Experiment for Two phase Flow in Fractured Porous Media written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In numerical reservoir simulation naturally fractured reservoirs are commonly divided into matrix and fracture systems. The high permeability fractures are usually entirely responsible for flow between blocks and flow to the wells. The flow in these fractures is modeled using Darcy's law and its extension to multiphase flow by means of relative permeabilities. The influence and measurement of fracture relative permeability for two-phase flow in fractured porous media have not been studied extensively, and the few works presented in the literature are contradictory. Experimental and numerical work on two-phase flow in fractured porous media has been initiated. An apparatus for monitoring this type of flow was designed and constructed. It consists of an artificially fractured core inside an epoxy core holder, detailed pressure and effluent monitoring, saturation measurements by means of a CT-scanner and a computerized data acquisition system. The complete apparatus was assembled and tested at conditions similar to the conditions expected for the two-phase flow experiments. Fine grid simulations of the experimental setup-were performed in order to establish experimental conditions and to study the effects of several key variables. These variables include fracture relative permeability and fracture capillary pressure. The numerical computations show that the flow is dominated by capillary imbibition, and that fracture relative permeabilities have only a minor influence. High oil recoveries without water production are achieved due to effective water imbibition from the fracture to the matrix. When imbibition is absent, fracture relative permeabilities affect the flow behavior at early production times.

Book Emerging Advances in Petrophysics

Download or read book Emerging Advances in Petrophysics written by Jianchao Cai and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the influence of pore-throat size distribution, pore connectivity, and microscale fractures, the transport, distribution, and residual saturation of fluids in porous media are difficult to characterize. Petrophysical methods in natural porous media have attracted great attention in a variety of fields, especially in the oil and gas industry. A wide range of research studies have been conducted on the characterization of porous media covers and multiphase flow therein. Reliable approaches for characterizing microstructure and multiphase flow in porous media are crucial in many fields, including the characterization of residual water or oil in hydrocarbon reservoirs and the long-term storage of supercritical CO2 in geological formations. This book gathers together 15 recent works to emphasize fundamental innovations in the field and novel applications of petrophysics in unconventional reservoirs, including experimental studies, numerical modeling (fractal approach), and multiphase flow modeling/simulations. The relevant stakeholders of this book are authorities and service companies working in the petroleum, subsurface water resources, air and water pollution, environmental, and biomaterial sectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fractal analysis has entered a new era. The applications to different areas of knowledge have been surprising. Let us begin with the fractional calculus-fractal geometry relationship, which allows for modeling with extreme precision of phenomena such as diffusion in porous media with fractional partial differential equations in fractal objects. Where the order of the equation is the same as the fractal dimension, this allows us to make calculations with enormous precision in diffusion phenomena-particularly in the oil industry, for new spillage prevention. Main applications to industry, design of fractal antennas to receive all frequencies and that is used in all cell phones, spacecraft, radars, image processing, measure, porosity, turbulence, scattering theory. Benoit Mandelbrot, creator of fractal geometry, would have been surprised by the use of fractal analysis presented in this book: "Part I: Petroleum Industry and Numerical Analysis"; "Part II: Fractal Antennas, Spacecraft, Radars, Image Processing, and Measure"; and "Part III: Scattering Theory, Porosity, and Turbulence." It's impossible to picture today's research without fractal analysis.
