Book An Experimental Study of Volumetric Quality on Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics for Two Phase Impinging Jets

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Volumetric Quality on Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics for Two Phase Impinging Jets written by Brian Karl Friedrich (II) and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study further expands the current knowledge of the relationship between heat transfer and fluid mechanics. Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of air-assisted water jet impingement was experimentally investigated under a fixed water flow rate condition. Water and air were the test fluids. The effects of volumetric quality (ß = 0 – 0.9) on the Nusselt number, hydraulic jump diameter, and pressure were considered. The results showed that stagnation Nusselt number, hydraulic jump diameter, and stagnation pressure increased with volumetric quality to a maximum value at 0.8 of the volumetric quality, and then decreased. The stagnation Nusselt number and hydraulic jump diameter of the air assisted water jet impingement are governed by the stagnation pressure. Based on the experimental results, a new correlation for the normalized stagnation Nusselt number and hydraulic jump are developed as a function of the normalized stagnation pressure alone. This research can be applied to further enhance the cooling of industrial applications, such as, cooling of electronics and processing of materials.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Hydrodynamics of a Plunging Two phase Plane Jet

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Hydrodynamics of a Plunging Two phase Plane Jet written by Brian Kern and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plane two-phase (liquid + gas) jets occur in plunging jet bubble columns, and have potential applications in the inertial confinement fusion systems. In this investigation, some basic hydrodynamic and stability characteristics of these jets are studied. An experimental test facility is used where plunging plane two-phase jets are generated using air and water. The jet inlet flow characteristics are systematically varied. The void fraction distribution in the jet is measured at several locations along the jet, using the Gamma-Ray densitometry technique. The jet thickness is also measured. The void distribution profiles are then used for the qualitative assessment of the internal flow and phase interaction phenomena in the jet. The limits of the stability of the jet are also experimentally specified. Theoretical modeling of the macroscopic flow phenomena is also addressed.

Book Experimental Study of Highly Viscous Impinging Jets

Download or read book Experimental Study of Highly Viscous Impinging Jets written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this research is to study the behavior of highly viscous gravity-driven jets filling a container. Matters of interest are the formation of voids in the fluid pool during the filling process and the unstable behavior of the fluid in the landing region which manifests itself as an oscillating motion. The working fluids used in this research are intended to simulate the flow behavior of molten glass. Qualitative and quantitative results are obtained in a parametric study. The fraction of voids present in the fluid pool after the filling of the container is measured for different parameter values of viscosity and mass flow rate. Likewise, frequencies of the oscillating jet are measured. Results are inconclusive with regard to a correlation between parameter settings and void fractions. As for frequencies, power law correlations are established.

Book Hydrodynamics of Adiabatic Inverted Annular Flow

Download or read book Hydrodynamics of Adiabatic Inverted Annular Flow written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For low-quality film boiling in tubes or rod bundles, the flow pattern may consist of a liquid jet-like core surrounded by a vapor annulus, i.e., inverted annular flow. The stability, shape, and break-up mechanisms of this liquid core must be understood in order to model correctly this regime and to develop appropriate interfacial transfer correlations. This paper reports on a study in which inverted annular flow was simulated in an adiabatic system. Turbulent water jets, issuing downward from long-aspect nozzles were enclosed within cocurrent gas annuli. Jet-core diameter and velocity, and gas-annulus diameter, velocity, and species were varied, yielding liquid Reynolds numbers up to 33,000, void fractions from 0.29 to 0.95, and relative velocities from near zero to over 80 m/s. Jet-core break-up lengths and secondarily, core break-up mechanisms, were observed visually, using strobe lighting.

Book Numerical and Experimental Study of Free and Impinging Jets

Download or read book Numerical and Experimental Study of Free and Impinging Jets written by Suyambazhahan S. and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the numerical and experimental study of oscillations in laminar free and impinging jets. A finite volume algorithm based on non-orthogonal cells has been used to solve the transient, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for two dimensional flow. The code has been employed for the prediction of flow and thermal oscillations in isothermal and non-isothermal jets. For free jets, the effects of parameters such as Reynolds number, inlet temperature and jet orientation on oscillations have been studied. For impinging jet flow, the effects of stand-off distance, Reynolds number and inlet temperature on mean flow as well as jet oscillations have been studied.

Book Impinging Streams

Download or read book Impinging Streams written by Yuan Wu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original idea of IS is to send two solid-gas streams to impinge against each other at high velocity, enhancing transfer between phases. IS is classified into two kinds: Gas-continuous impinging streams (GIS) and Liquid-continuous ones (LIS). Impinging Streams describes fundamentals, major properties and application of IS, as a category of novel technologies in chemical engineering. Because of the universality of transfer phenomena, it is receiving widespread attention. This book represents the first book in this area for over 10 years and covers achievements and technologies. * describing clearly the properties of Gas-continuous and Liquid-continuous impinging streams * introducing new technical devices * includes a number of worked application cases, which are illustrated in detail

Download or read book Jets Wakes and Cavities written by Zarantonello Eduardo H. and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 2: Jets, Wakes, and Cavities provides a systematic discussion of jets, wakes, and cavities. This book focuses on the general aspects of ideal fluid theory and examines the engineering applications of fluid dynamics. Organized into 15 chapters, this volume starts with an overview of the different types of jets and explores the atomization of jets in carburetors in connection with gasoline engine design. This text then emphasizes the formal treatment of special flows and examines the flows that are bounded by flat plates and free streamlines. Other chapters consider the flows that are bounded by the cavity behind a symmetric wedge. This book discusses as well the intuitive momentum and similarity considerations. The final chapter deals with several surprising physical complications. Mathematician, physicists, engineers, and readers interested in the fields of applied mathematics, experimental physics, hydraulics, and aeronautics will find this book extremely useful.
