Book Experimental Study of Simulated High Altitude Rocket Exhaust Plumes

Download or read book Experimental Study of Simulated High Altitude Rocket Exhaust Plumes written by Wendell Norman and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gas dynamic structure of high altitude rocket plumes has been studied in a low density tunnel to obtain basic data on plume size and shape and to determine the extent of the mixing region between the free-stream and rocket gases. The rocket was simulated by specially designed ejectors using helium and CO2 as the gases, with conditions chosen to simulate a 100,000-lb-thrust rocket at an altitude of 80 km. Data taken included impact pressure surveys, density measurements of the free-stream and plume gas, temperature measurements, and color photographs. The last three of these were taken using electron beam techniques. The result of the study is a set of basic data. Analysis and interpretation of the data will be performed under a separate study. Book High Altitude Rocket Plume Structure Experiment and Calculations

Download or read book High Altitude Rocket Plume Structure Experiment and Calculations written by Frederick P. Boynton and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Values of impact pressure and species number density measured in a wind tunnel experiment simulating a high-altitude rocket exhaust plume are compared with values calculated with a computer code. Considering a number of uncertainties in the absolute calibrations of the experiment, agreement is generally considered satisfactory for conditions in the mixing region between plume and free stream gases. However, in the forward part of the plume, the data suggests that free-stream gas penetrates further into the plume than the calculation predicts; the cause of this discrepancy is unknown. (Author).

Book Analysis and Correlation of High Altitude Rocket Exhaust Plume Experimental Data

Download or read book Analysis and Correlation of High Altitude Rocket Exhaust Plume Experimental Data written by Larry R. Ring and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented of a study for evaluating the applicability and accuracy of rocket motor and exhaust plume gasdynamic analytical models. Evaluation of these analytical models was based upon correlation of analytical predictions with experimental data obtained in the High Altitude Plume Radiation Program. The effects of oxidizer-to-fuel ratio gradients, combustion efficiency, combustion chamber mixing, nozzle throat expansion and chemistry model were ascertained. Non-continuum effects and closed form analytical techniques were also considered. (Modified author abstract).

Book An Experimental Study of Plume Effects on Lifting Re entry Vehicles

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Plume Effects on Lifting Re entry Vehicles written by John R. Rausch and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 6, 8, and 10 on a representative lifting body entry vehicle and a Mach number of 10 on a flat plate using heated air and other gases to simulate rocket exhaust plumes. Extensive flow separation resulting from the plumes was observed on both configurations during the test program and the most powerful parameters which affected plume induced separation included: model shape, angle of attack, Reynolds number, nozzle expansion ratio, nozzle total pressure, and nozzle gas temperature and specific heat. The flat plate model showed much less flow separation than the delta planform at similar test conditions, however, serious problems in control effectiveness were indicated on both models for the aft mounted elevon. The data did not correlate well with existing semi-empirical correlations developed for control surface induced separation and plume shape. New semi-empirical correlations were developed for predicting plume shape in a region of plume induced separation and for predicting the pressure and the extent of the separated region.

Book A Study of Wind Tunnel Simulation of High Altitude Rocket Plumes

Download or read book A Study of Wind Tunnel Simulation of High Altitude Rocket Plumes written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of several simple, inviscid, high-altitude rocket plume models indicated the most accurate representation. Wind-tunnel plume measurements have been used to verify the Jarvinen-Hill model and to study the plume viscous mixing layers which simulated flight conditions by matching wind tunnel and flight plume Knudsen numbers. The HAPRAP data simulate typical ICBM sustainer flight in the 120 to 320 km altitude range.

Book Combined Experimental analytical Investigation of Afterburning Solid Rocket Exhaust Plume Properties to Improve Signature Level Prediction Capability

Download or read book Combined Experimental analytical Investigation of Afterburning Solid Rocket Exhaust Plume Properties to Improve Signature Level Prediction Capability written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes experimental work performed on a high-speed pre-mixed hydrogen-air jet flame in a co-flowing annular air flow in the presence and absence of base flow at the exit. Includes details on the high-speed flame in a coaxial air facility which was designed, built, and tested to simulate (in a first approximation) rocket exhaust flow conditions. In addition, a new high spatial resolution computer-controlled three-dimensional gear was built to traverse the investigated flow field. The main experimental tool was a two-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter with data acquisition and processing system. The tool was used to measure the two main velocity components. Other measurements included turbulence intensities and mean temperatures at various downstream sections. The measured initial and flow field data will serve to evaluate the validity of various turbulence models and to predict the structure of rocket exhaust plumes. Moreover, the experiments established the effect of the base flow on the turbulence structure of the exhaust plume.

Book Investigation of Exhaust Backflow from a Simulated Cluster of Three Wide spaced Rocket Nozzles in a Near space Environment

Download or read book Investigation of Exhaust Backflow from a Simulated Cluster of Three Wide spaced Rocket Nozzles in a Near space Environment written by James M. Cubbage and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A limited experimental investigation has been conducted to confirm the existence of exhaust backflow from a cluster of three widely spaced nozzles operating in a near-space environment and to determine pressure and heat- transfer coefficients in the region washed by the backflow. Experiments were conducted in a 61-foot-diameter vacuum sphere using a sine solid-propellant rocket motor and a reflection plate. The reflection plate was used to simulate the interference planes that would normally exist for a cluster of three nozzles. Data were obtained for nozzle spacings of 8.02 and 17.05 nozzle exit diameters for pressures which simulated a nominal altitude range of 3.2 x 109(exp 5) to 1.8 x 10(exp 5) feet. The pressure data indicated that the backflow was super- sonic for several nozzle exit diameters ahead (upstream) of the nozzle exit plane and that the flow over small-diameter thermocouples in this region was in the free-molecule region. Average heat-transfer coefficients obtained for small-diameter cylinders (thermocouples) in this region were on the order of 1 x 10(exp -4) Btu/sq ft-sec-degrees R.
