Book Experimental Study of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Experimental Study of Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication written by F. K. ORCUTT and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report describes direct experimental measurements of pressure distribution, surface temperature and film shape or deformation profile which were obtained during an investigation of elastohydrodynamic lubrication. These measurements illustrate effects of load, rolling speed, lubricant properties and sliding speed. Their purpose is to provide guidance and verification for the development of an elastohydrodynamic theory which can then be generally applied to practical problems in the manner which has been described. The results agree with the thermal-elastohydrodynamic theory of Cheng in many respects, but there are also differences which indicate that certain modifications in the formulation of the theory should be made. Book An Experimental Study of Friction in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book An Experimental Study of Friction in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication written by M. D. Longfield and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of friction torque have been made on a disk machine by introducing a torque sensor into the drive to one of the disks. Experimental readings of torque have been made for loads up to approximately 40,000 psi maximum Hertzian contact pressure, for rolling speeds from 15.7 to 314 inches per second and for sliding speeds up to 130 inches per second. A comparison has been made between two oils of dissimilar characteristics. The friction torques developed with an oil of high pressureviscosity exponent and low viscosity index form a strong contrast with the torques developed by an oil of relatively low pressure-viscosity exponent and high viscosity index. The difference is most marked at high loads and low sliding speeds - the pressure sensitive oil developing much larger coefficients of friction. The dependence of friction upon load and sliding speed is in accordance with recent theories of elastohydrodynamic lubrication. It has been confirmed that the effective viscosity within the contact is dependent on the rolling speed of the disks. Data is presented showing the variation of the pressure-viscosity exponent with rolling speed.

Book Elasto Hydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Elasto Hydrodynamic Lubrication written by D. Dowson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-18 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elasto-Hydrodynamic Lubrication deals with the mechanism of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication, that is, the lubrication regime in operation over the small areas where machine components are in nominal point or line contact. The lubrication of rigid contacts is discussed, along with the effects of high pressure on the lubricant and bounding solids. The governing equations for the solution of elasto-hydrodynamic problems are presented. Comprised of 13 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication and representation of contacts by cylinders, followed by a discussion on equations relevant to lubrication, including the Reynolds equation. The reader is then introduced to lubrication of rigid cylinders; the importance of film thickness in highly loaded rigid contacts; the elasticity of solids in contact; and the theory of elasto-hydrodynamic lubrication. Subsequent chapters focus on apparatus and measurements of film thickness and film shape; friction and viscosity; and lubrication of gears and roller bearings. This book will be of interest to tribologists.

Book Metal Seals

Download or read book Metal Seals written by L. E. C. Ruskell and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Report describes an experimental and theoretical study of elastohydrodynamic lubrication in reciprocating metal seals. Their lubrication was not satisfactory under all conditions, and the aim of the work was to gain a fundamental understanding of the hydrodynamic conditions between the seal and counterface to determine why this was so. A rig was constructed which enabled simultaneous measurement of pressure distribution and film shape under a seal. On the theoretical side, solutions of the elastohydrodynamic equations are given and compared with the experimental results. The Report concludes with a discussion of the physical factors responsible for the unsatisfactory behaviour of the seals; some suggestions are made as to how these might be overcome. (Author).

Book Rheological Effects on Friction in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Rheological Effects on Friction in Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication written by Edward G. Trachman and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical and experimental investigation is presented of the friction in a rolling and sliding elastohydrodynamic lubricated contact. The rheological behavior of the lubricant is described in terms of two viscoelastic models. These models represent the separate effects of non-Newtonian behavior and the transient response of the fluid. A unified description of the non-Newtonian shear rate dependence of the viscosity is presented as a new hyperbolic liquid model. The transient response of viscosity, following the rapid pressure rise encountered in the contact, is described by a compressional viscoelastic model of the volume response of a liquid to an applied pressure step. The resulting momentum and energy equations are solved by an iterative numerical technique, and a friction coefficient is calculated. The experimental study was performed, with two synthetic paraffinic lubricants, to verify the friction predictions of the analysis. The values of friction coefficient from theory and experiment are in close agreement.

Book Rheology and Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication

Download or read book Rheology and Elastohydrodynamic Lubrication written by B.O. Jacobson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1991-07-24 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a thorough overview on recent developments in lubricant rheology, elastohydrodynamic lubrication and the effects of surface roughness and particulate contamination in the lubricant on the overall behaviour of a heavily loaded lubricated contact. One of the aims of the book is to make clear to the reader that a Newtonian model for the lubricant behaviour does not have enough degrees of freedom to be able to describe the friction - traction behaviour of heavily loaded lubricated contacts or the oil film build-up and collapse under surface asperities for rough surfaces. The book contains quite a lot of experimental data of lubricants at high pressures, both solidification pressures, compressibilities and shear strength increase coefficients, which make it possible to estimate the friction and power loss in heavily loaded lubricated contacts for different pressures, temperatures, sliding speeds, and lubricant types. This is the first time that data of this type has been included in a textbook and it is hoped that the questions highlighted will serve to initiate and guide future research in this field.

Book Elastohydrodynamics

Download or read book Elastohydrodynamics written by Ramsey Gohar and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) is a difficult topic, embracing several disciplines, which can cause many problems for engineers and scientists. This up-to-date volume explains the subject both theoretically and experimentally. Moreover, with a refreshing approach and using several novel techniques of application, it provides lucid coverage of new and important findings. Here, in one volume, are the results of much research over the last forty years. The author's clear explanation of the theory of EHL is authoritatively applied to a wide range of related topics, with physical explanations wherever possible. Many of the experimental techniques described were carried out at the Imperial College Lubrication Laboratory, where the application of interferometry (a means of measuring the EHL film thickness) was pioneered.
