Book An Investigation of the Flow of Water Through Submerged Orifices and Pipes

Download or read book An Investigation of the Flow of Water Through Submerged Orifices and Pipes written by Ward Reid Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Investigation of the Flow of Water Through Submerged Orifices and Pipes: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Civil Engineer in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1909 It was the purpose of the series of experiments reported herein to determine the coefficients of discharge for sub - merged orifices and pipes of various sizes and kinds under different heads. Special attention was given to heads lower than ft. The orifices were of three kinds, five being circular, eight rectangular, and one triangular. Two short pipes were used. One was the standard short tube used in laboratory work. The other was longer and extended into both the ehtrance and discharge parts of the apparatus. This second pipe was threaded on the outside at each end so that month - pieces of varying angles and lengths could be attached and their effect on the discharge studied. An attempt was made to discover the effect on the flow caused by a variation in the depth of water over the orifice or pipe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of flows through porous medium has been the topic of considerable research activity by both theoretical and experimental investigators for the last one and half centuries. The subject of flows through porous medium assumed importance because of its interesting many applications in the diverse fields of science, engineering and technology. The classical theory of flows through porous media has been extensively reported in several treaties. The studies are initiated in the middle of the nineteenth century by Henry Philibest Graspard Darcy, while investigating the flow of water purification plant in the city Dijon in France. Darcy, based on a series of experiments, formulated an empirical law for the flows through porous medium. The main aim of the book is the study of the flows of Newtonian and non-Newtonian through the porous medium. One general observation in all the situations is that the non-Darcian effect is more predominant in a thin region around the bounding surface. The thickness of the region is of, where K is the permeability coefficient of the medium. At large distance from the boundary the flow will be of Darcian in nature.
