In contrast to neutral gases, these phenomena in plasmas are greatly influenced by self-consistent fields, in particular electric fields. These can produce particle and energy fluxes, in addition to those generated by the inhomogeneity of the plasma composition and temperature. As a result, the physical effects accompanying transport phenomena in plasmas are far more numerous and complicated than those in neutral gases, and the solution of corresponding problems is more difficult. The effects, however, are usually far more interesting and sometimes surprising. This book presents a systematic survey and analysis of the main mechanisms of transport phenomena in plasma and gives examples of gradually increasing complexity to illustrate these mechanisms and the relationships between them. The author pays special attention to the analysis of experimental measurements and considers the relevant processes analytically as well as qualitatively. The majority of problems dealt with in this book are of considerable practical interest, and the phenomena described often determine the main characteristics of processes and devices. To clarify the behavior of the plasma flow in the perpendicular magnetic field, numerical simulations based on an electromagnetic hybrid particle-in-cell (PIC) method have been carried out. This also deals with results of current experimental and theoretical research on all aspects of the physics of high-temperature plasmas and of controlled nuclear fusion, as well as the basic phenomena in highly-ionized gases in the laboratory, in the ionosphere and in space, in magnetic-confinement and inertial-confinement fusion along with associated diagnostic techniques.This serves as a valuable information resource to a comprehensive study of plasmas, ranging from low temperature and ideal plasmas and covering to radiation and particle transport phenomena, the response of plasmas to external fields, and treatment of plasma waves, plasma instabilities, nonlinear phenomena in plasmas, and the study of plasma relations with surfaces. The development of various swarm techniques, such as the temperature variable selected ion flow tube or the selected ion flow drift tube, has provided the prerequisite for detailed investigations into ion molecule reactions both in binary and three body collisions, and the mechanisms of many reactions are now understood quite satisfactorily. This information could not have been obtained without a detailed knowledge of the transport phenomena involved. Some of these, such as the internal-energy distribution of drifting ions, have only very recently been tackled both theoretically and experimentally; a consistent model is now being developed. As the interactions between the various branches of swarm research have become more and more intense, the most obvious thing to do was putting together a review on the present state of this subject, which is the aim of this book.
