Download or read book Fundamental Properties of the Neutron written by I︠U︡riĭ Andreevich Aleksandrov and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron is an elementary particle that has been extensively studied both theoretically and experimentally. This book reviews and analyses the results of the mainly experimental research on the neutron and rationalizes what is known so far about its intrinsic properties. The book covers topics that have not previously been dealt with in detail, including the gravitational properties of the neutron, precise determination of its mass, beta-decay, and its electromagnetic properties. This translation is an updated version of the original Russian text and also covers the more recent advances made during the past 7-8 years, including the application of methods based on the storage of ultra-cold neutrons to the study of beta-decay, new precise measurement of the mass of the neutron, and confirmation of modern theories of the internal structure of the neutron.

Book excerpt: The reactor-based laboratory at the Institut Laue-Langevin is recognized as the world's most productive and reliable source of slow neutrons for the study of low energy particle and nuclear physics. The book highlights the impact of about 600 very diverse publications about work performed in these fields during the past more than 30 years of reactor operation at this institute. On one hand neutrons are used as a tool to generate nuclei in excited states for studying their structure and decay, in particular fission. Uniquely sensitive experiments can tell us a great deal about the symmetry characteristics of nuclei and their fission properties. On the other hand, studies with slow neutrons as the object of investigation are complementary to studies at huge particle accelerators. Experiments carried out at the ILL contribute to elucidate basic questions about the building blocks of the Universe by analyzing very precisely subtle neutron properties.

Book excerpt: Although the fission of heavy nuclei was discovered over 75 years ago, many problems and questions still remain to be addressed and answered. The reader will be presented with an old, but persistent problem of this field: The contradiction between Prompt Fission Neutron (PFN) spectra measured with differential (microscopic) experiments and integral (macroscopic and benchmark) experiments (the Micro-Macro problem). The difference in average energy is rather small ~3% but it is stable and we cannot explain the difference due to experimental uncertainties. Can we measure the PFN spectrum with high accuracy? How may we compare results of different experiments to provide better accuracy? Are our traditional theoretical models correct? What can be done to solve the Micro-Macro problem in future? These questions are discussed in this monograph for the reader. The current work will be of interest to graduate students and researchers, particularly those working in nuclear and neutron physics.
Download or read book Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei written by Hans Volker Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear physics is presently experiencing a thrust towards fundamental phy sics questions. Low-energy experiments help in testing beyond today's stan dard models of particle physics. The search for finite neutrino masses and neutrino oscillations, for proton decay, rare and forbidden muon and pion de cays, for an electric dipole moment of the neutron denote some of the efforts to test today's theories of grand unification (GUTs, SUSYs, Superstrings, ... ) complementary to the search for new particles and symmetries in high-energy experiments. The close connections between the laws of microphysics, astrophysics and cosmology open further perspectives. This concerns, to mention some of them, properties of exotic nuclei and nuclear matter, and star evolution; the neutrino and the dark matter in the universe; relations between grand unification and evolution of the early universe. The International Symposium on Weak and Electromagnetic Interactions in Nuclei (W.E.LN. 1986)' held in Heidelberg 1-5 July 1986, in conjunction with the 600th anniversary of the University of Heidelberg, brought together experts in the fields of nuclear and particle physics, astrophysics and cosmol ogy.

Download or read book A Closer Look at Neutrons in Nuclear and Radiological Engineering written by V. P. Singh and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The neutron is an unstable nucleon outside the atomic nucleus; its mass is approximately 0.0014 times higher than the proton's mass and it plays an essential role in the atomic nucleus's stability. The neutron does not have an electric charge and interacts with matter causing numerous reactions. The above properties make the neutron essential in several areas. In nuclear power production, for instance, the neutron combined with the moderator plays a critical role. This book is a collection of works related to the neutron and its applications. Each chapter of this book's content is self-contained and is derived from the experience and research carried out by the authors. The book describes each aspect of neutrons ranging from their essential characteristics to their applications. Chapters of this book concern topics including the description of neutron characteristics, the challenge of neutron dosimetry, the ambient dose equivalent due to cosmic neutrons, the use of neutrons as an analytical tool through neutron activation analysis, the absorbed dose response of natural minerals which also have thermoluminescent features, and the use of neutrons in medicine to treat cancer and rheumatoid arthritis. The book also discusses topics such as neutron attenuation by super-alloys, neutron production in radiotherapy with electrons, the use of neutrons to detect explosives, and cloud computing technology for neutron dosimetry and spectrometry. This book would be handy for scientists, engineers, researchers, students, and practitioners in neutron studies and applications"--

Download or read book Experimental Neutron Scattering written by B. T. M. Willis and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-23 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first systematic experiments in neutron scattering were carried out in the late 1940s using fission reactors built for the nuclear power programme. Crystallographers were amongst the first to exploit the new technique, but they were soon followed by condensed matter physicists and chemists. Engineers and biologists are the most recent recruits to the club of neutron users. The aim of the book is to provide a broad survey of the experimental activities of all these users. There are many specialist monographs describing particular examples of the application of neutron scattering: fifteen of such monographs have been published already in the Oxford University Press series edited by S. Lovesey and E. Mitchell. However this book will appeal to newcomers to the field of neutron scattering, who may be intimidated by the bewildering array of instruments at central facilities (such as the Institut Laue Langevin in France, the ISIS Laboratory in the UK, or the PSI Laboratory in Switzerland), and who may be uncertain as to which instrument to use.

Download or read book Constraining the Nuclear Matter Equation of State from Electromagnetic Observables in Finite Nuclei written by Francesca Bonaiti and published by . This book was released on 2024 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the nature of neutron stars, where matter reaches extremely high density conditions, is one of the most fascinating questions in nuclear astrophysics. The structure, dynamics and composition of these astrophysical objects are governed by the nuclear matter equation of state, which relates the pressure supporting the star against gravitational collapse to the huge range of densities present in its interior. Around the densities reached in the atomic nucleus, the nuclear matter equation of state can be investigated in laboratory experiments targeting nuclear electromagnetic properties, such as electric dipole polarizabilities and isoscalar monopole resonances. These observables, connected to parameters entering the nuclear matter equation of state, shed light also on the collective excitations of the nucleus at low energy. Ab initio calculations, combining nuclear forces from chiral effective field theory with systematically improvable many-body methods, represent now the gold standard of nuclear structure computations in increasingly large systems. In this framework, computing electromagnetic observables involves additional challenges, as it requires the knowledge of both bound and continuum excited states of the nucleus. Such calculations have become possible in medium-mass nuclei thanks to the coupled-cluster (CC) formulation of the Lorentz integral transform (LIT) technique, known as LIT-CC method, limited thus far to doubly magic or semi-magic nuclei. This thesis extends the reach of ab initio LIT-CC calculations of electromagnetic observables beyond closed-shell nuclei and towards the dripline. We show how the LIT-CC approach can be reformulated for nuclei in the vicinity of closed shells, focusing on two-particle-attached (2PA) systems, which are characterized by having two nucleons outside a closed-shell core. For most of this thesis, we focus on the electric dipole polarizability. We first test LIT-CC predictions on new experimental data for the closed-shell 40Ca, serving as an additional benchmark for constraints on the nuclear matter equation of state from chiral forces. Next, we validate the newly developed LIT-CC method for 2PA nuclei, computing the non-energy-weighted dipole sum rule and the dipole polarizability of 16,24O in both the closed-shell and the new frameworks, finding agreement between error bars. We analyse the evolution of the dipole polarizability along the oxygen and calcium isotopic chains, providing predictions for 24O and 54,56Ca, which will serve as motivation for future experimental studies at the dripline. We then present a study of the exotic halo nucleus 8He, where we compare our predictions for the dipole polarizability with recent high-statistics data obtained at RIKEN, Japan by the SAMURAI collaboration. In the end, we move our attention to isoscalar monopole resonances, and extract a preliminary estimate of the incompressibility of symmetric nuclear matter.

Download or read book Neutron Physics for Nuclear Reactors written by Salvatore Esposito and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume gives an accurate and very detailed description of the functioning and operation of basic nuclear reactors, as emerging from yet unpublished papers by Nobel Laureate Enrico Fermi. In the first part, the entire course of lectures on Neutron Physics delivered by Fermi at Los Alamos is reported, according to the version made by Anthony P French. Here, the fundamental physical phenomena are described very clearly and comprehensively, giving the appropriate physics grounds for the functioning of nuclear piles. In the second part, all the patents issued by Fermi (and coworkers) on the functioning, construction and operation of several different kinds of nuclear reactors are reported. Here, the main engineering problems are encountered and solved by employing simple and practical methods, which are described in detail. This seminal work mainly caters to students, teachers and researchers working in nuclear physics and engineering, but it is of invaluable interest to historians of physics too, since the material presented here is entirely novel.
