Book CYCLOPS A Breakthrough Code to Predict Solid Propellant Burning Rates

Download or read book CYCLOPS A Breakthrough Code to Predict Solid Propellant Burning Rates written by Martin S. Miller and published by . This book was released on 2003-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical capability to predict the burning rate of real propellants from their ingredients would be an invaluable aid to formulating new propellants. Despite progress over the last decade on a very few simple ingredients, such as cyclotrimethylenetrintramine (RDX), and a few simple binary mixtures, no general capability of this sort exists today. This shortcoming is not due to insufficient computational resources, but to a lack of understanding of fundamental combustion mechanisms in the condensed phase and surface(gas interlace for typical propellant ingredients and their mixtures. This difficult problem is likely to remain intractable for some time to come. In this report, we demonstrate that our previously published semi-empirical formalism for single ingredients can be success fully extended to treat multi-ingredient propellants. In particular, for purposes of this report, we confine ourselves to nitrate- ester propellants, using MlO, M2, M9, and JA2 as examples. However, the method should also be applicable to other classes of homogeneous propellants and even composite propellants where mixing of ingredients in a surface melt layer or sufficiently small particle sizes remove the multi- dimensional character. The method treats the gas-phase processes on the level of elementary reaction and multicomponent transport. A semi-empirical pyrolysis law coupled with informed estimates of the decomposition products of the condensed phase enables us to finesse the absence of knowledge of the detailed processes occurring in the condensed phase and at the burning surface. Results of a computer code, CYCLOPS, based on this approach, show that both the burning rate and flame structure are well predicted for a series of four U. S. Army gun propellants.

Book Materials and Processes

Download or read book Materials and Processes written by Barrie D. Dunn and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-29 with total page 677 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to assist scientists and engineers select the ideal material or manufacturing process for particular applications; these could cover a wide range of fields, from light-weight structures to electronic hardware. The book will help in problem solving as it also presents more than 100 case studies and failure investigations from the space sector that can, by analogy, be applied to other industries. Difficult-to-find material data is included for reference. The sciences of metallic (primarily) and organic materials presented throughout the book demonstrate how they can be applied as an integral part of spacecraft product assurance schemes, which involve quality, material and processes evaluations, and the selection of mechanical and component parts. In this successor edition, which has been revised and updated, engineering problems associated with critical spacecraft hardware and the space environment are highlighted by over 500 illustrations including micrographs and fractographs. Space hardware captured by astronauts and returned to Earth from long durations in space are examined. Information detailed in the Handbook is applicable to general terrestrial applications including consumer electronics as well as high reliability systems associated with aeronautics, medical equipment and ground transportation. This Handbook is also directed to those involved in maximizing the relia bility of new materials and processes for space technology and space engineering. It will be invaluable to engineers concerned with the construction of advanced structures or mechanical and electronic sub-systems.

Book Erosive Burning Studies of the Composite Solid Propellants by the Reacting Turbulent Boundary layer Approach

Download or read book Erosive Burning Studies of the Composite Solid Propellants by the Reacting Turbulent Boundary layer Approach written by Mohan Kishen Razdan and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of the current research is to achieve a basic understanding of the erosive burning mechanism in solid-propellant rocket motors. Both theoretical and experimental studies are undertaken. In the theoretical modeling, a reactive turbulent boundary-layer approach is used to analyze the erosive burning phenomenon. A second-order turbulent closure has been selected in the theoretical formulation. The theoretical model can be used to study the effect of gas velocity, pressure, streamwise pressure gradient, oxidizer particle size, and oxidizer-to-fuel ratio. For model validation, a test rig has been designed to establish a two-dimensional, turbulent boundary layer flow over a flat plate. The test rig can operate under various gas-dynamic conditions. A laser-photodiode servomechanism has been developed to measure the burning rate, and preliminary tests have demonstrated successful operation of the apparatus. (Author).

Book Fast Reactions in Energetic Materials

Download or read book Fast Reactions in Energetic Materials written by Alexander S. Shteinberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.
