Download or read book Experimental Researches on the Food of Animals and the Fattening of Cattle written by Robert Dundas Thomson and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Researches on the Food of Animals, and the Fattening of Cattle: With Remarks on the Food of Man; Based Upon Experiments Undertaken by Order of the British Government The present Work is based on an extensive series of experiments which were made at the instance of the Government. The original object of that inquiry was to determine the relative influence of barley and malt in feeding cattle; but as the opportunity seemed a favorable one for investigating some scientific problems of great importance to physiology, and of extreme value in the physical management of man and animals, advantage was taken of it, by permission, to extend the experiments so as to include these objects. It is well known to those who have been in the habit of late years of following the researches which have been undertaken to elucidate the nature of the growth of animals, that it is now generally agreed that the muscular part of animals is derived from the fibrinous or nitrogenous ingredients of the food, while the source of animal fat has been disputed. The present experiments seem to demonstrate that the fat of animals cannot be produced from the oil of the food, but must be evolved from the calorifient, or heat-forming portion of the aliment, essentially assisted by its nitrogenous materials. By following out this principle, the author has been enabled to detect an important relation subsisting between the nutritive and calorifient portion of the food, upon the determination of which, for the various conditions of animals, he considers the laws of animal dieting depend. Book Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry

Download or read book Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry written by Rodney A. Hill and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-09-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry provides a thorough and concise overview of feed efficiency in beef cattle. It frames the great importance of feed efficiency to the industry and details the latest findings of the many scientific disciplines that intersect and aim to improve efficient and sustainable production of nutritious beef. The vast majority of production costs are directly tied to feed. With increased demand for grains to feed a rapidly increasing world population and to supply a new demand for alternative fuels, feed costs continue to increase. In recent years, the negative environmental impacts of inefficient feeding have also been realized; as such feed efficiency is an important factor in both economic viability and environmental sustainability of cattle production. Feed Efficiency in the Beef Industry covers a broad range of topics ranging from economic evaluation of feed efficiency to the physiological and genetic bases of efficient conversion of feed to high quality beef. Chapters also look at how a fuller understanding of feed efficiency is leading to new selective breeding efforts to develop more efficient cattle. With wide-ranging coverage from leading international researchers, Feed Efficiency will be a valuable resource for producers who wish to understand the complexities, challenges, and opportunities to reduce their cost of production, for students studying the topic and for researchers and professionals working in the beef industry.

Book The Routledge Companion to Animal Human History

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Animal Human History written by Hilda Kean and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Companion to Animal-Human History provides an up-to-date guide for the historian working within the growing field of animal-human history. Giving a sense of the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of the field, cutting-edge contributions explore the practices of and challenges posed by historical studies of animals and animal-human relationships. Divided into three parts, the Companion takes both a theoretical and practical approach to a field that is emerging as a prominent area of study. Animals and the Practice of History considers established practices of history, such as political history, public history and cultural memory, and how animal-human history can contribute to them. Problems and Paradigms identifies key historiographical issues to the field with contributors considering the challenges posed by topics such as agency, literature, art and emotional attachment. The final section, Themes and Provocations, looks at larger themes within the history of animal-human relationships in more depth, with contributions covering topics that include breeding, war, hunting and eating. As it is increasingly recognised that nonhuman actors have contributed to the making of history, The Routledge Companion to Animal-Human History provides a timely and important contribution to the scholarship on animal-human history and surrounding debates.
