Some of the most important publications in the field of iron ore reduction, which appeared since 1967, have been used to bring the manuscript as far as possible up to date. The kind assistance of Dr. K. BOHNENKAMP of the Max-Planck-Institut fUr Eisenforschung, Dusseldorf, was much appreciated in this respect. Ohapters 2.9 and 2.10, dealing with the reduction of molten oxide slags by solid carbon and with the contribution of the water-gas reaction to iron ore reduction, have been added for the English edition. Ohapter 2.9 has been completely revised with the kind assistance of Dr. H. J. GRABKE, Stuttgart. Dipl.-Ing. J. LODDE contributed to this edition by revising the bibliography. Owing to the rapid development of the blast furnace it was necessary to revise Ohapter 5 considerably. In this field many valuable suggestions have been made by Dipl.-Ing. G. LANGE and Dipl.-Ing. P. HEINRICH. Furthermore, Ohapters3 and 4 have been thoroughly revised by Dr.-Ing. E. FORSTER and Dr.-Ing. U. SCHIERLOH. Last, but not least, we have to thank our translators for their excellent work.

S., Late Director of the Survey Carrying fuel. Duction, the fuel can be transported much farther than the ore. Charcoal is often carried from localities where wood is abundant, to blast-furnaces in the vicinity of mines, a distance of twenty or thirty leagues. This is done in part by water or by rail, but for the transport of the ores from regions not easily accessible at other times, sledges are much used in the winter, which becomes the most favorable season for getting both the charcoal and the ores to the furnaces, which are generally as near as possible to the mines. In some cases the ores are carried for distances of ten or more leagues but this is generally when there is a back-freight of iron or other materials. The wages of a carter, with his horse, vary from to per day, and the cost of transporting the ore is from to 9-6 cents the ton for the English mile. After this, attempts were made to utilize the calorific energy of the caib'ou monoxide resulting from the reduction of the ore, which tn all experiments so far recorded had been wasted; To accomplish this air under pressure was introduced into the furnace about 12 inches below the upper level of the charge. The carbon of the. Charge, in the form of coke dust, was mixed with fire clay and briquetted to prevent it from being consumed by the air blast. It was hoped that by thus utilizing the carbon monoxide in preheating the charge and partially reducing the ore the output would be materially increased.
