Book Development of Psychopathology

Download or read book Development of Psychopathology written by Benjamin L. Hankin and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2005-03-23 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..a blending of two important approaches to understanding psychopathology- the developmental approach and the vulnerability approach. I think a book like this is timely, is needed, and would be of interest to professors who teach courses in psychopathology at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels." — Robin Lewis, Old Dominion University "Bringing together developmental psychopathology frameworks and the vulnerability-stress models of psychological disorders is an excellent idea. I am aware of no other book that incorporates these two approaches. Having taught Psychopathology courses for both master′s and doctoral students, I reviewed many books to recommend and use in the courses. It is my belief that a book of this type is needed particularly for graduate students." —Linda Guthrie, Tennessee State University Edited by Benjamin L. Hankin and John R. Z. Abela, Development of Psychopathology: A Vulnerability-Stress Perspective brings together the foremost experts conducting groundbreaking research into the major factors shaping psychopathological disorders across the lifespan in order to review and integrate the theoretical and empirical literature in this field. The volume editors build upon two important and established research and clinical traditions: developmental psychopathology frameworks and vulnerability-stress models of psychological disorders. In the past two decades, each of these separate approaches has blossomed. However, despite the scientific progress each has achieved individually, no forum previously brought these traditions together in the unified way accomplished in this book. Key Features: Consists of three-part text that systematically integrates vulnerability-stress models of psychopathology with a developmental psychopathological approach. Brings together leading experts in the field of vulnerability, stress, specific vulnerabilities to psychological disorders, psychopathological disorders, and clinical interventions. Takes a cross-theoretical, integrative approach presenting cutting-edge theory and research at a sophisticated level. Development of Psychopathology will be a valuable resource for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in clinical psychology, as well as for researchers, doctoral students, clinicians, and instructors in the areas of developmental psychopathology, clinical psychology, experimental psychopathology, psychiatry, counseling psychology, and school psychology.

Book Principles of Experimental Psychopathology

Download or read book Principles of Experimental Psychopathology written by Mark F. Lenzenweger and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, contributors provide examples of how the methods of experimental psychology and allied disciplines have been applied to the study of schizophrenia and other conditions through a strong understanding of normative processes, genetics, and neuroscience. In the opening chapter, B.A. Maher discusses his view of the formation of delusional thought and the methodological approach he has taken in studying this area. Maher's influence is examined throughout the book, as contributors explore schizophrenia and other disorders from alternative methodological viewpoints. Several current research programs are discussed, including one that explores models of vocational support programs for helping individuals with severe mental disorders find and maintain work. This book will be a resource for scholars and graduate students who are committed to psychological science as a laboratory-based discipline that has real-world implications. Book Psychopathology and Psychiatry

Download or read book Psychopathology and Psychiatry written by Ivan P. Pavlov and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pavlov’s fundamental theory of higher nervous activity concerns the adaptation to changing external environments of organisms such as dogs, apes, and humans. In the 1920s, Pavlov and his disciples used laboratory experimentation to study the etiology and therapy of neuroses In human beings and other species. Later, In the 1930s, Pavlov devoted much time and effort to the systematic study of psychopathology In clinical settings. Psychopathology and Psychiatry is Pavlov’s little-known series of descriptions of these experiments and findings. Pavlov used two fundamental approaches In the study of neuroses and psychoses: the conditioned salivary reflex method, with dogs as subjects; and the observation of neurotic and psychotic behavior In humans. Pavlov was primarily Interested In how the cortex worked to facilitate the orgaftilsm's adaptation to the external environment. The conditioned reflex findings were explained In terms of hypothetical physiological processes. Pavlov was certain that dogs’ Inability to adapt flexibly was the result of conflicts and traumatic experiences. Soon thereafter, he linked these discoveries to actual human cases of neuroses and psychoses. These are covered In this volume. In a new introduction to this classic text, George Windholz traces Pavlov’s scholarly and scientific life, highlighting his various studies and results under stressful political and pedagogical conditions. Psychopathology and Psychiatry continues to be a highly significant work of scientific study. Psychologists, psychiatrists, and behavioral researchers of all professional persuasions will find this work to be essential reading.

Book Experimental Approaches to Psychopathology

Download or read book Experimental Approaches to Psychopathology written by Mitchell L. Kietzman and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human experimental psychopathology, the scientific investigation of abnormal behavior by established laboratory and experimental techniques and procedures, is a new field whose contributors are mainly scattered throughout other areas of specialization, such as psychiatry, biometrics, neurophysiology, and psychology. This volume contains empirical and theoretical chapters both by active researchers in experimental psychopathology and by researchers in other fields relevant to experimental psychopathology. It is a significant step on the long and difficult road toward establishing an experimentally based psychopathology which will eventually provide (as physiology has done for much of medicine, and physics for much of engineering) a genuinely scientific basis for clinical practice. -- Book jacket.

Book Evolutionary Psychopathology

Download or read book Evolutionary Psychopathology written by Marco Del Giudice and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-06 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mental disorders arise from neural and psychological mechanisms that have been built and shaped by natural selection across our evolutionary history. Looking at psychopathology through the lens of evolution is the only way to understand the deeper nature of mental disorders and turn a mass of behavioral, genetic, and neurobiological findings into a coherent, theoretically grounded discipline. The rise of evolutionary psychopathology is part of an exciting scientific movement in psychology and medicine -- a movement that is fundamentally transforming the way we think about health and disease. Evolutionary Psychopathology takes steps toward a unified approach to psychopathology, using the concepts of life history theory -- a biological account of how individual differences in development, physiology and behavior arise from tradeoffs in survival and reproduction -- to build an integrative framework for mental disorders. This book reviews existing evolutionary models of specific conditions and connects them in a broader perspective, with the goal of explaining the large-scale patterns of risk and comorbidity that characterize psychopathology. Using the life history framework allows for a seamless integration of mental disorders with normative individual differences in personality and cognition, and offers new conceptual tools for the analysis of developmental, genetic, and neurobiological data. The concepts presented in Evolutionary Psychopathology are used to derive a new taxonomy of mental disorders, the Fast-Slow-Defense (FSD) model. The FSD model is the first classification system explicitly based on evolutionary concepts, a biologically grounded alternative to transdiagnostic models. The book reviews a wide range of common mental disorders, discusses their classification in the FSD model, and identifies functional subtypes within existing diagnostic categories.

Book The First Century of Experimental Psychology

Download or read book The First Century of Experimental Psychology written by Elliot Hearst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, originally published in 1979, sponsored by the Psychonomic Society (the North American association of research psychologists), commemorates the centennial of experimental psychology as a separate discipline – dated from the opening of Wilhelm Wundt’s laboratory at Leipzig in 1879. Each major research area is surveyed by distinguished experts, and the chapters treat historical background and progress, experimental findings and methods, critical theoretical issues, evaluations of the current state of the art, future prospects, and even practical and social relevance of the work. Writing in a lively style suitable for non-specialists, the authors provide a general introduction to the history of experimental psychology. Illustrated by many photographs of leading historical figures, this book blends history with methodology, findings with theory, and discussion of specific topics with integrated assessments of what has truly been accomplished in the first hundred years of experimental psychology.
