Book Experimental phonetics Changes in the location of vowels

Download or read book Experimental phonetics Changes in the location of vowels written by Job Anane and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2018-06-29 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: B, University of Education, course: EXPERIMENTAL PHONETICS, language: English, abstract: The positions of individual vowels in the acoustics vowels space often change over time in languages of which Asante-Twi a dialect of Akan is not an exception. Sound changes in languages are typically associated with social factors like age, gender, social class. This study will explore the changes in the location of vowels as produced by four generational of speakers of Asante-Twi speakers. Fant (1966) also posits that since the length of the vocal track determines the overall patterns change, age and depend on gender. The current study will therefore investigate whether generational differences can affect vowel quality by comparing speakers of Asante-Twi with ages 6-14, 19-24, 40-50 and 60+.

Book Vowel Inherent Spectral Change

Download or read book Vowel Inherent Spectral Change written by Geoffrey Stewart Morrison and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-14 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been traditional in phonetic research to characterize monophthongs using a set of static formant frequencies, i.e., formant frequencies taken from a single time-point in the vowel or averaged over the time-course of the vowel. However, over the last twenty years a growing body of research has demonstrated that, at least for a number of dialects of North American English, vowels which are traditionally described as monophthongs often have substantial spectral change. Vowel inherent spectral change has been observed in speakers’ productions, and has also been found to have a substantial effect on listeners’ perception. In terms of acoustics, the traditional categorical distinction between monophthongs and diphthongs can be replaced by a gradient description of dynamic spectral patterns. This book includes chapters addressing various aspects of vowel inherent spectral change (VISC), including theoretical and experimental studies of the perceptually relevant aspects of VISC, the relationship between articulation (vocal-tract trajectories) and VISC, historical changes related VISC, cross-dialect, cross-language, and cross-age-group comparisons of VISC, the effects of VISC on second-language speech learning, and the use of VISC in forensic voice comparison.

Book Contemporary Issues in Experimental Phonetics

Download or read book Contemporary Issues in Experimental Phonetics written by Norman Lass and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary Issues in Experimental Phonetics provides comprehensive coverage of a number of research topics on experimental phonetics. This book is divided into four parts. Part I describes the instrumentation systems employed in the study of speech acoustics and speech physiology. The models, aerodynamic principles, and peripheral physiological mechanisms of speech production are discussed in Part II. Part III explains the problems in the specifications of the acoustic characteristics of speech sounds and suprasegmental features of speech. The speech perception process, speaker recognition, theories on the nature of the dichotic right ear advantage, and errors in auditory perception are elaborated in the last chapter. This text likewise covers the measurement of temporal processing in speech perception and interrelationship of speech, hearing, and language in an understanding of the total human communication process. This publication is valuable to speech and hearing scientists, speech pathologists, audiologists, psychologists, linguists, and graduate students researching on experimental phonetics.

Book Vowel Perception and Production

Download or read book Vowel Perception and Production written by B. S. Rosner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1994-07-21 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last 50 years have witnessed a rapid growth in the understanding of the articulation and the acoustics of vowels. Contemporary theories of speech perception have concentrated on consonant perception, and this volume is intended as a balance to such bias. The authors propose a computational theory of auditory vowel perception, accounting for vowel identification in the face of acoustic differences between speakers and speaking rate and stress. This work lays the foundation for future experimental and computational studies of vowel perception.
