Book excerpt: A series of transport calculations have been performed to characterize the neutron environment of two out-of-core metallurgical irradiation experiments performed by Materials Engineering Associates (MEA) at the reactor at the Buffalo Materials Research Center. The experiments are sponsored by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and are part of NRC's program to understand better the irradiation embrittlement of steels and weld metals. Spectrum-averaged activation cross sections, needed for the determination of neutron exposures of irradiated metal samples, have been determined, and their sensitivity to various changes in the irradiation environment during a three-year period have been examined. The transport calculations show small effects in the MEA experiment, generally below 1%, for cross-section changes in the metallurgical sample region because of changes in the core during the irradiations. Changes in the experimental surroundings have more influence on the neutron spectrum. Differences range from 1 to 5% for neutron detectors with thresholds below 4 MeV to 10% for the 63Cu(n, ?)60Co reaction, whose energy threshold is about 6 MeV.

Book excerpt: The Fission Gas Plenum Experiment was conducted at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Tower Shielding Facility during FY 1987 to: provide data for verification of the assumptions and calculational methods used to determine the neutron leakage from the plenum, and provide an uncertainty evaluation associated with the calculations. The Tower Shielding Reactor source was modified to represent the neutron spectrum leaving a typical liquid-metal-cooled reactor core along its axis. The experimental configurations resulted from the insertion of either a homogeneous or homogeneous-heterogeneous gas plenum combination into the iris of a concrete slab, with the only variable being the thickness of the plenum. Integral neutron fluxes were measured behind each of the configurations at specified locations, and neutron spectra were obtained behind selected mockups. The experimental data are presented in both tabular and graphical form. This experiment is the second in a series of six experiments to be performed as part of a cooperative effort between the United States Department of Energy and the Japan Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation. The research program is intended to provide support for the development of advanced sodium-cooled reactors.

The final chapter focuses on the detailed and varied experiments that have been performed on the complicated fission process, together with the parameters of the resonances of the fissile nuclides. This monograph will be a useful resource for spectroscopists and physicists.

Book excerpt: As part of Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) studies, a research program has been carried out to design an epithermal neutron beam (1 eV - 10 keV range) inside the ISIS experimental reactor at Saclay. Aluminium beam tubes were specially manufactured to be fitted with different screens. The main goal of this study is to compare different filters in order to reach at the beam exit the best epithermal selectivity. A calculation scheme was validated to simulate the device response by a Monte Carlo calculation code (TRIPOLI 3) and required a measurement campaign to compare experimental spectra with calculated ones. An experimental method of spectra determination was performed to provide quickly an approximate spectrum shape in the epithermal range. This method confirmed the calculation scheme at each neutron beam interface with eight different foils (five in the epithermal range). Therefore, filters research was performed exclusively by calculations and led us to define a final set of screens.
