Book excerpt: Foam has been gaining increasing attention from the gas and oil industries for its mobility control ability, especially for the fractured system. However, its performance is negatively affected by its instability at elevated temperature and pressure. In this research, a comprehensive investigation of nitrogen foam morphology and bulk and in-situ foam rheology has been performed, utilizing the microscope, rheometer, and core-flooding system to explore the effect of chemicals and foam generation methods. We found a direct correlation between the shear and in-situ rheology of foam that allows the prediction of apparent in-situ viscosity based on bulk foam rheology. Then, we focused on scCO2 foam made with a recent category of chemicals, viscoelastic surfactants (VES). The scCO2 foam performance in reservoir conditions has been tested with the PVT cell and core-flooding system. We found a strong correlation between the viscosity/viscoelasticity of the VES systems and their performance as foam stabilizers in both bulk form and porous media. To the best of our knowledge, these results unveil, for the first time, the impact of surfactant viscosity/viscoelasticity on supercritical CO2 foam performance in bulk and porous media in a systematic manner. Finally, we applied the above knowledge of the foam to the fractured Berea sandstone system. We noticed the significant foam mobility control ability in the fractured system, and we concluded the effect of fracture surface roughness on foam flow performance in the presence and absence of oil.

Models using springs/dashpots or Volterra integrals are capable of predicting the material response, but place little or no emphasis on the reasoning behind the response. This research proposes a microscopic reasoning behind polymer chain movement, while developing a model to predict the creep and stress relaxation of a polymer foam. Based on the theorized slip/stick of polymer chains as they slide past each other, this model successfully predicts the behavior of a PMI polymer foam under tensile loads. This model lends insights into polymer microscopic behavior, which may be used for the development of future polymer materials. When possible, industry standard test methods are used to obtain tensile creep and stress relaxation results from rectangular specimens of Rohacell 31 IG foam. A common set of material parameters is fitted to the data, validating the micromechanic reasoning to polymer chain movement. To gain insight into observed test result variability, an investigation of the elastic modulus and material density relationship is performed using nominal foam densities of 31 kg/m℗đ, 51 kg/m℗đ, 71 kg/m℗đ. Additional testing and modeling is performed to validate the model under load/partial-unload/hold, load/unload/recovery, and load/instantaneous-unload test cycles. The model successfully captures the observed material nuances during these more complex loading cycles.

Book excerpt: This research effort is focused on understanding the mechanical response of foams, and other complex fluids, from the microscopic to the macroscopic level. The research uses a model two-dimensional system: bubble rafts. Bubble rafts are a single layer of gas bubbles with liquid walls that float on a water surface. The work involves studies of the macroscopic response of foam under various conditions of external forcing, mesoscopic studies of bubble motion, and systematic variations of the microscopic details of the system. In addition to characterizing the specific properties of the bubble raft, a second aim of the research is to provide experimental tests of various general theories that have recently been developed to characterize complex fluids. Primarily, the focus is on testing the proposed jamming phase diagram paradigm. This paradigm suggests that a general jamme state of matter exists and is common to a wide range of systems, including foam, colloids, granular matter, glasses, and emulsions. Therefore, we have extended our research in two directions. First, we have included studies of plastic bead rafts. These are systems of plastic beads floating on the air-water interface. The advantage of plastic beads is that they do not pop, so they can be studied for the much longer periods of time required to measure the slow dynamics associated with the jammed state. Also, they allow us to explore a different density regime than the bubbles. Second, to better understand the role of defects in jamming behavior, we have done a few experiments on the impact of defects on domain growth.
