Book Recent Studies of Crack Initiation During Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zirconium Alloys

Download or read book Recent Studies of Crack Initiation During Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zirconium Alloys written by B. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to study crack initiation, we had first to develop a technique for reproducibly obtaining large numbers of very small crack initiation regions. The previously used test methods of stressed split-rings or pressurized (or compressed) tubes gave low success rates. Specimens either showed through-wall cracks, or no cracks, with few incipient cracks being observed. This suggested that the propagation time was short compared with the incubation time. Attempts to overcome this by unloading specimens following the first acoustic emission signal still gave a low frequency of incipient cracks.

Book Reduced Yield Stress for Zirconium Exposed to Iodine

Download or read book Reduced Yield Stress for Zirconium Exposed to Iodine written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iodine-induced stress-corrosion cracking (ISCC), a known failure mode for nuclear fuel cladding, occurs when iodine generated during the irradiation of a nuclear fuel pellet escapes the pellet through diffusion or thermal cracking and chemically interacts with the inner surface of the clad material, inducing a subsequent effect on the cladding's resistance to mechanical stress. To complement experimental investigations of ISCC, a reactive force field (ReaxFF) compatible with the Zr-I chemical and materials systems has been developed and applied to simulate the impact of iodine exposure on the mechanical strength of the material. The study shows that the material's resistance to stress (as captured by the yield stress of a high-energy grain boundary) is related to the surface coverage of iodine, with the implication that ISCC is the result of adsorption-enhanced decohesion.

Book excerpt: This 15th Edition of the International Conference on Materials Degradation in Light Water Reactors focuses on subject areas critical to the safe and efficient running of nuclear reactor systems through the exchange and discussion of reseach results as well as field operating and management experience.

Book Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion of Zircaloy Fuel Cladding

Download or read book Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion of Zircaloy Fuel Cladding written by L. Brunisholz and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of its impact on nuclear power plant reliability, fuel cladding failure induced by pellet cladding interaction is a problem of major concern. It is usually analyzed as stress corrosion cracking caused by volatile fission products like iodine.

Book Chemical Aspects of Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys

Download or read book Chemical Aspects of Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys written by D. Cubicciotti and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermodynamics of the zirconium-iodine system are summarized. In the gas phase are four stable species: ZrI4, ZrI3, ZrI2, and ZrI. Their enthalpies of formation and free-energy functions are presented. The only one of those species relevant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of zirconium alloys by iodine is the tetraiodide. There are also four solid compounds corresponding approximately in composition to the tetra, tri, di, and monoiodides. Ranges of solid solution composition, enthalpies of formation, and free-energy functions for those phases are given. Thermodynamic information for iodine chemisorbed on zirconium surfaces is also presented. These thermochemical results are used to analyze chemical behavior in situations related to SCC. In particular, reaction of cesium iodide with uranium dioxide in a fuel rod may produce an iodine pressure large enough to result in chemisorbtion of iodine on clean zirconium.

Book Modeling of Zircaloy Stress Corrosion Cracking

Download or read book Modeling of Zircaloy Stress Corrosion Cracking written by RE. Einziger and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phenomenological model has been developed for predicting iodine-induced stress-corrosion crack (SCC) initiation and growth in Zircaloy cladding. This model is capable of predicting various observed behaviors related to SCC.
