Book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Jet in a Cross Flow

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Jet in a Cross Flow written by David Kenneth Mosher and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interference phenomenon occurring when a subsonic turbulent jet exhausts normally from a large flat plate into a low speed crossflow was experimentally investigated in the Georgia Tech nine foot wind tunnel. Static pressures were measured on the surface around the jet. In the region off the surface, including the jet plume, wake and surrounding areas, the average total and static pressures and the average velocity magnitudes and directions were determined. Three jet exit configurations were studied, one circular and two slot-shaped with width to length ratios of 0.3 and 3.4. All have the same exit area. The effective jet to cross-flow velocity ratio was varied, for each of the exit configurations, over the range 4.0 to 12.0. Analysis of the data indicates that the pressure distributions induced on the surface are a combined result of the jet's blocking and entraining effects on the cross flow with entrainment becoming the more dominant of the two as the effective velocity ratio is increased. This relative dominance brings about an attenuation of total interference lift loss (when computed as a fraction of gross thrust) primarily by causing a rise in the low pressures in the wake region as the effective velocity ratio increases. When the effective velocity ratio is held fixed, the total interference lift loss increases with increasing width to length ratio of the jet exit. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of Three dimensional Free Mixing of Incompressible Turbulent Free Jets

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Three dimensional Free Mixing of Incompressible Turbulent Free Jets written by Nicholas Trentacoste and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the bulk properties of turbulent, three-dimensional, incompressible, air jets issuing into a quiescent air ambient is presented. The jet orifices utilized included rectangular, elliptical, axisymmetric and triangular geometries. Experimental results of pertinent mean flow properties such as axis velocity decay, half-width growth, etc., are reported. The flow fields of such jets are found to be characterized by three distinct regions in the axis velocity decay. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that low-speed jets which originate from non-axisymmetric orifices decay to axisymmetry far downstream of the jet exit. (Author).

Book A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Jet Interaction

Download or read book A Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Jet Interaction written by Steven Brian Weeks and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of two impinging plane turbulent jets was investigated for the purpose of understanding the performance of proportional fluid amplifiers and momentum-exchange devices. Velocity and turbulence profiles were measured across and at various distances along the combined jet axis through the use of a constant temperature hot-wire anemometer. Experimentally determined jet deflection angles were found to agree with those predicted in a previous work by the free-streamline theory. The results, which are presented in terms of normalized parameters, show that the jet interaction may be divided into three regions: mixing; transition; and fully developed. A vena-contracta effect was found to exist in the mixing region. A discussion of each of the three regions is presented in detail along with generalizations for similar geometries. (Author).

Book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Incompressible Three dimensional Wall Jet

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of a Turbulent Incompressible Three dimensional Wall Jet written by Hermann Viets and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents an experimental investigation of the bulk properties of a turbulent, three-dimensional, incompressible air wall jet issuing into a quiescent air ambient from a rectangular orifice parallel to and at the surface of a flat plate. Results of this study indicate the characteristic features of such a dissipative flow. The behavior of a three-dimensional flow field of this nature has associated with it three distinct regions in the axis velocity decay with an approach to the flow field of a radial wall jet far downstream of the jet exit and on the centerline of the flow. Spreading rates in the various cross planes display a dependence upon the aforementioned characteristic regions. (Author).
