Book excerpt: Experiments have been carried out on a vertical jet of helium issuing into a co-flow of air at a fixed exit velocity ratio of 2.0. At all the experimental conditions studied, the flow exhibits a strong self excited periodicity. The natural frequency behavior of the jet, the underlying fine-scale flow structure, and the transition to turbulence have been studied over a wide range of flow conditions. The experiments were conducted in a variable pressure facility which made it possible to vary the Reynolds number and Richardson number independently. A stroboscopic schlieren system was used for flow visualization and single-component Laser Doppler Anemometry was used to measure the axial component of velocity. The flow exhibits several interesting features. The presence of co-flow eliminates the random meandering typical of buoyant plumes in a quiescent environment and the periodicity of the helium jet under high Richardson number conditions is striking. Under these conditions transition to turbulence consists of a rapid but highly structured and repeatable breakdown and intermingling of jet and freestream fluid. At Ri = 1.6 the three-dimensional structure of the flow is seen to repeat from cycle to cycle. The point of transition moves closer to the jet exit as either the Reynolds number or the Richardson number increases. The wavelength of the longitudinal instability increases with Richardson number. At low Richardson numbers, the natural frequency scales on an inertial time scale. At high Richardson number the natural frequency scales on a buoyancy time scale. The transition from one flow regime to another occurs over a narrow range of Richardson numbers from 0.7 to 1. Continuing this pattern, the Fifth Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows was held at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, in August 1985. The meeting brought together more than 250 participants from around the world to present the results of new research on turbulent shear flows. As experimental techniques and computing power have developed, the breadth of investigations into the structure and development of turbulent flows has in creased to encompass many diverse fields of application in engineering, physics, biolo gy and so on. As a consequence, it is now very difficult for a single research worker to keep in touch with the many developments that are taking place in turbulence. One of the few opportunities for obtaining some overall view of the subject arises from large international symposia on turbulence and, although they have some drawbacks, it is this opportunity that is one of their main merits. The International Symposium on Turbulent Shear Flows has now been held on three occasions and they seem to be established as a major opportunity for papers on a very diverse range of topics to be presented at a single meeting. This volume is a collec tion of papers from the third symposium that was held at the University of California, Davis from 9-11 September 1981. The papers are divided into four sections entitled Wall Flows, Scalar Transport, Recirculating Flows and Fundamentals. This collection represents about a third of the total number of papers presented.

Book excerpt: The Seventh Symposium was held on the campus of Stanford University with·a combination offacilities and weather which made it possible to add open-air poster sessions and coffee breaks to the programme. This was particularly convenient as the call for papers attracted close to three hundred abstracts and a total number of participants well in excess of this number. Some one hundred and thirty papers were presented in carefully phased parallel sessions and thirty six further contributions were made available in the form of posters. In addition, a lively open-forum session allowed additional speakers to make brief presentations. The staff of the Thermo-Sciences Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford undertook the local arrangements with evident success and their extensive record of contributions to Turbulent Shear Flows made the venue particularly appropriate. Also, the Centre for Turbulence Studies, based on the faculty of the University and the NASA Ames Research Center, provided a considerable body of expertise with emphasis on direct numerical stimulation.

Book excerpt: Three studies are described, each of which makes use of turbulent flow fields calculated using the Navier-Stokes equations. In the first study, exact numerical solutions of the full Navier-Stokes equations are used to evaluate subgrid-scale models used in large-eddy simulations. The flows investigated are homogeneous and incompressible with strong imposed mean strain or shear. Models evaluated include the conventional Smagorinsky model as well as a recently introduced formulation based on the notion of scale similarity. In the second study, exact numberical simulations of homogeneous shear flows are examined using various computer-graphic tools, the aim being to attempt to understand the mechanisms underlying the production of turbulence energy and growth of length scales in such flows. The subject of the third study is the development of a computational model of the viscous sublayer of wall-bounded incompressible turbulent flow. In this work, the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations, suitably simplified, are solved subject to boundary conditions imposed at the outer edge of the viscous sublayer. The formulation of these edge conditions so that computed average distributions of turbulence quantities agree with experimental data through the sublayer is the essence of work.
