Book Lower Hybrid Current Drive Experiments in the HT 7 Tokamak

Download or read book Lower Hybrid Current Drive Experiments in the HT 7 Tokamak written by Zhongyong Chen and published by Nova Novinka. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The achievement of steady state operation and long pulse is one of the major challenges in the tokamak plasmas. One of the most effective means to sustain tokamak steady state operation is non-inductive current drive (NICD) by lower hybrid (LH) wave. Lower hybrid current drive (LHCD) as an effective NICD tool has been demonstrated in many tokamaks. LHCD is used to modify the plasma current profile to improve the MHD stability, or used in conjunction with ion Bernstein wave (IBW) to achieve high performance discharge. The achievement of high current drive efficiency is of primary importance since it determines the required power that must be recycled to sustain the plasma current. This book discusses the lower-hybrid current drive experiences currently being done in regards to HT-7 tokamaks.

Book Review of Tokamak Experiments on Direct Electron Heating and Current Drive with Fast Waves

Download or read book Review of Tokamak Experiments on Direct Electron Heating and Current Drive with Fast Waves written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from tokamak experiments on direct electron interaction with the compressional Alfven wave ({open_quote}fast wave{close_quote}) are reviewed. Experiments aimed at electron heating as well as those in which fast wave electron current drive was investigated are discussed. A distinction is drawn between experiments employing the lower hybrid range of frequencies, where both the lower hybrid wave ({open_quote}slow wave{close_quote}) and the fast wave can propagate in much of the plasma, and those experiments using the fast wave in the range of moderate to high ion cyclotron harmonics, where only the fast wave can penetrate to the plasma core. Most of the early tokamak experiments were in the lower hybrid frequency regime, and the observed electron interaction appeared to be very similar to that obtained with the slow wave at the same frequency. In particular, electron interaction with the fast wave was observed only below a density limit nearly the same as the well known slow wave density limit. In the more recent lower frequency fast wave experiments, electron interaction (heating and current drive) is observed at the center of the discharge, where slow waves are not present.

Book Experimental Investigation on Electron Cyclotron Absorption at Down shifted Frequency in the PLT Tokamak

Download or read book Experimental Investigation on Electron Cyclotron Absorption at Down shifted Frequency in the PLT Tokamak written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The absorption of 60 GHz electron cyclotron waves, with the extraordinary mode and an oblique angle of propagation, has been investigated in the PLT tokamak in the regime of down-shifted frequencies. The production of energetic electrons, with energies of up to 300 to 400 keV, peaks at values of toroidal field (approx. =29 kG) for which the wave frequency is significantly smaller than the electron cyclotron frequency in the whole plasma region. The observations are consistent with the predictions of the relativistic theory of electron cyclotron damping at down-shifted frequency. Existing rf sources make this process a viable method for assisting the current ramp-up, and for heating the plasma of present large tokamaks.

Book Fluctuations in a Tokamak Plasma

Download or read book Fluctuations in a Tokamak Plasma written by R. L. Kubena and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of low frequency floating potential fluctuations (f d"200 kHz) in a research tokamak plasma using two spatially separated electrostatic probes has been performed. The spectra, correlation length, and the phase velocity of the fluctuations in both the radial and azimuthal direction have been determined. The propagation velocity in the toroidal direction was also measured and was found to be in the direction of electron current flow. The waves traveled azimuthally in the ion diamagnetic drift direction, even after the usual E x B rotation was taken into account. The electron density fluctuations associated with these oscillations were large, [delta]n/n [approximately] 0.35 - 0.50. The spectra were found to have regularly spaced peaks which seemed to be related to specific azimuthal modes (m =1,2,3, ..., etc.) A parametric study was made to determine what effect plasma parameters had on these peaks. During periods of high electron density in the first 2 msec of the plasma lifetime, strong sawtooth type oscillations were observed. These oscillations typically had frequencies of approximately 10 kHz and were also present when large amounts of neutral gas were added during the discharge by a process called "gas puffing." The results are compared with experimental observations made on other plasma devices with electric and magnetic probes and with microwave and CO2 laser scattering techniques. (The scattering measurements are complimentary to the probe measurements since, in the former case, the wavelength is fixed by the scattering angle, but the oscillations could not be spatially localized.) The oscillations in the Caltech torus were probably related to a drift-tearing type instability which is thought to play a major role in the anomalous particle and energy flux observed in tokamaks. Comparisons are made between current theory and the experimental results. However, the theory for the observed oscillations is still in a rudimentary stage of development, and it is hoped that the present investigation will stimulate future analytical work.
