Book excerpt: Three-dimensional near-field wake structures behind a circular cylinder were investigated at Reynolds numbers ranging from 50 to 1800 based on cylinder diameter. The main feature of the three-dimensional structure of the wake behind the cylinder is the formation of streamwise vortices superimposed on the Strouhal vortex street. Flow visualization experiments were conducted to illustrate the relationship between the streamwise vortices and the Strouhal vortices. The formation of the streamwise vortices in the wake is discussed and it is emphasized that the stretching effect in the saddle region formed by the spanwise vortices plays a major role in the development of the streamwise vortices. Spanwise wavelengths of the streamwise vortices were measured using flow visualization and a digital imaging method. Spanwise perturbations were introduced to study the wavelength selectivity of the streamwise vortices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the three-dimensional, incompressible wake behind a blunt obstacle located at the leading edge of a flat plate is presented. Configurations studied included the 'clean' flat plate, and the flat plate with a rectangular, a square, or a two-dimensional obstacle fitted to the leading edge of the plate. Experimental results are compared to a mathematical model based on the Oseen linearization for diffusive flows. Based on mean flow measurements, a transition to turbulent flow was not encountered for any of the configurations examined. Such wakes are characterized by a region of strong vorticity immediately behind the obstacle followed by a region of viscous dissusion. Bulk properties of the wake-like flow and the applicability of the theoretical model were found to be highly dependent on the geometry of the obstacle. (Author).

Book excerpt: A study of the wake produced by an oscillating wing in a two-dimensional noncavitating flow was conducted in a water tunnel using small air bubbles as flow tracers. High-speed motion pictures were taken of the air bubble motion in the wake and near the trailing edge of the wing while it was oscillating in a pitching motion about the quarter-chord. Films were taken for reduced frequencies from 0.5 to 1.7. Two mean angles of attack and two amplitudes of oscillation were studied. Velocity measurements in the wake were made for one film. The flow at the trailing edge was observed to be tangential for low mean angles of attack only. The vorticity rolling-up process in the wake differed from the nonlinear inviscid lifting body theory in two ways: the vorticity rolled up into two or three line vortices for each half-wavelength in the wake, and the vorticity convection in the wake was retarded.
