Book Flow Boiling in Expanding Microchannels

Download or read book Flow Boiling in Expanding Microchannels written by Tamanna Alam and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-24 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Brief presents an up to date summary of details of the flow boiling heat transfer, pressure drop and instability characteristics; two phase flow patterns of expanding microchannels. Results obtained from the different expanding microscale geometries are presented for comparison and addition to that, comparison with literatures is also performed. Finally, parametric studies are performed and presented in the brief. The findings from this study could help in understanding the complex microscale flow boiling behavior and aid in the design and implementation of reliable compact heat sinks for practical applications.

Book Flow Boiling of a Dilute Emulsion In Smooth and Rough Microgaps

Download or read book Flow Boiling of a Dilute Emulsion In Smooth and Rough Microgaps written by Brandon M. Shadakofsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elucidates heat transfer behavior for boiling of dilute emulsions- mixtures of two immiscible fluids- which has received little attention to date. Of the work completed in this area, the majority has been focused on pool boiling where no mean flow is present, and this book is the first major work to be published regarding flow boiling of emulsions. The book includes a comprehensive review and assessment of research on emulsion-based heat transfer. Recent experiments are reported and analyzed to characterize heat transfer in microgap flow boiling via a systematic investigation into the effects of gap size, mass flux, and volume fraction on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop. The emulsion used in all experiments comprises droplets of an immiscible electronics cooling fluid suspended in water. The volume provides a complete baseline for flow boiling of water in the microgaps, enabling a determination of the enhancement of the heat transfer coefficient when the disperse component is present. Moreover, a subset of the data set pertains to flow boiling of dilute emulsions over microporous surfaces. The flow conditions for which the microporous surfaces enhance or degrade heat transfer are presented. Finally, this book provides a discussion of the physical phenomena which affect boiling and a set of nondimensional numbers that can be used for correlation.

Book Investigation of Separate Effects of Surface Condition on Subcooled Flow Boiling Heat Transfer

Download or read book Investigation of Separate Effects of Surface Condition on Subcooled Flow Boiling Heat Transfer written by Jee Hyun Seong and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experimental results showed that groove pattern, average roughness, and wettability do not affect subcooled flow boiling. Instead, they suggest that the process is determined by the location, size, and shape of cavities, and that micro-scale surface modifications (e.g., porous cracks) or nano-scale structures play a crucial role in the formation of active nucleation cavities and modify the bubble dynamics. A key takeaway from this study is that, to elucidate how surface modifications affect boiling heat transfer, one should carefully examine how the surface morphology changes at both the micro- and nano-scale and how the surface preparation process affect the formation of cavities.

Book Surface Structure Enhanced Microchannel Flow Boiling of Low Surface Tension Fluids

Download or read book Surface Structure Enhanced Microchannel Flow Boiling of Low Surface Tension Fluids written by Jay Sircar and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microchannel flow boiling can meet the thermal management requirements of high power and high frequency integrated circuits, but the technology has been limited by the instabilities unique to their length scales. During microchannel flow boiling of water, many of these instabilities have been successfully mitigated by the addition of surface microstructures. Thermohydraulic performance in terms of critical heat flux (CHF) and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) have also benefited from surface modification, without significantly adding to the overall flow pressure drop. For some microelectronic applications, water may not be the ideal fluid for microchannel flow boiling, such as in aerospace engineering where thermal management solutions must operate over a wide range of temperatures from subzero Celsius to optimal semiconductor temperatures. Alternatives to water as a working fluid include methanol, which has one of the largest ranges of operating temperatures suitable for electronics cooling, and hydrofluoroether (HFE) 7000, an environmentally friendly dielectric fluid. Though there are benefits to using these alternative working fluids, several of their thermophysical properties involved in generating capillary flows are significantly less than that of water-most notably their surface tensions. Prior studies have shown that the level of enhancement to the critical heat flux during the flow boiling of water, was positively correlated with the capillary-limited thin-film dryout heat flux. The same semi-analytical model suggested that thin-film dryout would occur at approximately one and two orders of magnitude smaller heat fluxes when switching from water to methanol and HFE 7000, respectively.
