Book Experimental Hepatocarcinogenesis

Download or read book Experimental Hepatocarcinogenesis written by M.B. Roberfroid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meeting on experimental hepatocarcinogenesis which took place in Spa, Belgium at the end of May 1987 was the Second European Meeting. About 100 scientists, mostly from Europe but also from the United States, met there for three days in a very friendly atmosphere to exchange knowledge and ideas on experimental and human liver carcinogenesis. The main topics discussed during the meeting included general reviews on hepatocarcinogenesis, experimental models of hepa tocarcinogenesis, biology of hepatocarcinogenesis, and in vitro studies in hepatocarcinogenesis. They are all covered by the various chapters of this proceedings volume, which reflects the present state of knowledge in this important field of cancer research. The final aim of that research is to understand the basic mechanisms of carcinogenesis. The liver offers a parti cularly interesting tool to reach such a goal. Indeed, its biochemistry, its morphology, and its physiology are very diverse, but relatively well known. Various protocols have been developed to produce hepatocellular carcinomas or other malignant tumors. Their appearance is most often preceded by phenotypically altered foci and nodules which have been isolated and characterized. The major cell populations of normal, neoplastic, and malignant livers have been cultivated.

Book Mycotoxins and Food Safety

Download or read book Mycotoxins and Food Safety written by Jonathan W. DeVries and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-03-31 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycotoxins, from the Greek "mukes" referring to fungi or slime molds and toxin from the Latin "toxicum" referencing a poison for arrows, have earned their reputation for being potentially deleterious to the health and well being of a consuming organism, whether it be animal or human. Unfortunately, mycotoxins are a ubiquitous factor in the natural life cycle of food producing plants. As such, control of the potential impact of mycotoxins on food safety relies heavily upon accurate analysis and surveys followed by commodity segregation and restricted use or decontamination through processing. The purpose of this book is to provide the most comprehensive and current information on the topic of mycotoxins and assuring food safety. Chapters represented in the book reflect such diverse topics ranging from occurrence and impact, analysis, reduction through processing and plant breeding, toxicology and safety assessments to regulatory perspectives. Authors represent a range of international perspectives.

Book Polyploidization and Cancer

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-01-11
  • ISBN : 1441961992
  • Pages : 157 pages

Download or read book Polyploidization and Cancer written by Randy Y.C. Poon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limiting genome replication to once per cell cycle is vital for maintaining genome stability. Although polyploidization is of physiologically importance for several specialized cell types, inappropriate polyploidization is believed to promote aneuploidy and transformation. A growing body of evidence indicates that the surveillance mechanisms that prevent polyploidization are frequently perturbed in cancers. Progress in the past several years has unraveled some of the underlying principles that maintain genome stability. This book brings together leaders of the field to overview subjects relating to polyploidization and cancer.

Book Liver and Environmental Xenobiotics

Download or read book Liver and Environmental Xenobiotics written by S.V.S. Rana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general populations are incidentally exposed to a wide variety of xenobiotics as a consequence of the pollution of the environment by industrial and agricultural chemicals. Xenobiotics entering the animal will undergo one or more of the following fate: (a) elimination unchanged, (b) metabolism by enzymes, (c) spontaneous chemical transformation and (d) remain unchanged in the body. The actions of xenobiotics on the body exhibit certain specificity depending upon the compound's chemical structure and reactivity. Since the processes of metabolism change these chemical properties ofaxenobiotic, bewildering number of reactions continue to pose new challenges to toxicologists and pharmacologists. It necessitates periodic and precise revision of the subject. This book contains invited contributions from learned colleagues that offer an excellent survey of and profound insight into the disposition and metabolism of a few environmentally and industrially significant xenobiotics. The topics range from an assessment of drug metabolising enzymes in the liver, DNA damage by reactive oxygen species generated by pesticides, role of NO in liver injury, hepatotrophicgrowth factor in liver regeneration, extracellular matrix in the liver, oncogene expression in liver injury, the hepatocarcinogenesis to oxidative stress and undifferentiated gene expression. Detailed analysis of the validity of liver function tests has been included. Last Chapter addresses the problem of apoptosis, which plays a key role in the signal transduction system of xenobiotics-induced liver injury. The reader should appreciate that overall exposure to this field is expanding at a rapid pace and selections had to be made.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last years much attention has been given to the investigation of the roles of specific growth modulators acting on liver cell populations. HGF functions as a pleotropic factor in the liver as well as in other extrahepatic tissues. The hepatic stem cell compartment is thought to play a major role in liver tissue restoration. Mechanisms of cell growth and cell death of the liver are described in detail, with particular emphasis on apoptosis. The functions of HBV-pX protein and the roles of hepatitis B virus gene expression relation to hepatocellular carcinoma are discussed. Techniques for obtaining human and nonhuman hepatocytes and other liver cell types and for efficient transfer and expression of genes in hepatocytes and liver-derived cell lines are presented.

Book Prevention of Occurrence and Recurrence of Human Hepatocarcinogenesis

Download or read book Prevention of Occurrence and Recurrence of Human Hepatocarcinogenesis written by Soo Ryang Kim and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most common malignancies in Asia. The annual incidence in both Japan and South Korea exceeds 30 cases per 100,000 and is predicted to continue increasing. This special issue explores the feasibility of delaying or preventing the occurrence and recurrence of human hepatocarcinogenesis in Asian countries, especially in Japan and South Korea. The underlying cause of HCC is different in these two countries: whereas in Japan up to 15% of the cases are caused by HBV infection and ~80% by HCV infection, the corresponding figures in South Korea are ~70% and ~20%. Recent data have shown that interferon (IFN) treatment is effective in delaying or preventing the occurrence and recurrence of HCC attributed to HCV infection. A randomized control study has demonstrated that the administration of IFN or acyclic retinoid significantly reduces the incidence of secondary HCC in patients who undergo curative removal of the primary HCC. Nevertheless, IFN and lamivudine therapy for the prevention of HCC in hepatitis B remain to be elucidated. Providing a broad range of state-of-the-art articles, this publication will be of benefit to clinicians and investigators working in the areas of hepatology, viral hepatitis and gastroenterology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contents of this book are the proceedings of the ACS symposium, "Fumonisins in Food," which was held April 4-6, 1995, at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in Anaheim, CA. This symposi"Qm, which was international in scope, brought together researchers from diverse backgrounds in academia, government, and industry. Thirty-three speakers discussed topics ranging from the analysis offumonisins to toxicology and regulatory aspects. The fumonisins became the spotlight of mycotoxin research in 1988, when re searchers at the South African Medical Research Council isolated and structurally charac terized the fumonisins. Since 1988, there has been an explosion in the numbers of papers dealing with fumonisin-related topics. The interest in the fumonisins has arisen for several reasons. First, fumonisins are found in measurable concentrations in corn grown throughout the world. Second, these compounds have been implicated as the causative agents in a variety of naturally occurring animal diseases. Finally, there is speCUlation that fumonisins may in part be responsible for the high incidence of esophageal cancer in regions of the world in which corn is the staple grain.

Book Liver Pathology and Alcohol

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roland R. Watson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461204216
  • Pages : 622 pages

Download or read book Liver Pathology and Alcohol written by Roland R. Watson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alcohol and other drugs of abuse are major contributing factors to liver disease and its pathology. Alcoholic cirrhosis causes thousands of deaths each year in the United States, and encourages liver replacement. A better understanding of the mechanisms of liver pathology will significantly aid basic researchers and physicians in treating and preventing liver damage. This book is designed especially for those researchers wishing to understand alcoholic liver disease. Therefore the role of alcohol in changing nutrition and its nutritional effects on liver disease are reviewed. The generation of free radicals during alcohol use has been found to be an important cause of membrane changes, of cancer development, and of lipid alterations-and thus of liver pathology. In addition to alcohol, other drugs of abuse, including morphine, cocaine, marijuana, and caffeine have also been shown to be significant contributors to liver pathology. The prevalence of drug and alcohol use and abuse today means that liver disease will continue as a major social and medical problem. The explanation of its biological origins cannot fail to help us better understand and treat the disease in the years to come.

Book Assessment and Management of Hepatobiliary Disease

Download or read book Assessment and Management of Hepatobiliary Disease written by Lajos Okolicsanyi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume cover all aspects of the assessment and management of hepatobiliary disease. The focal points of the book consist of three state-of-the-art summaries. The first of these deals with the highly topical problem of liver transplants from the point of view of patient selection. The second considers drug-induced liver injury in view of the fact that the liver is the main metabolic site for a number of drugs. The final summary deals with liver and aging: it asks whether the liver follows the aging process of the host organisms and whether the liver of aged liver transplant candidate donors could be suitable for grafting. Aside from these topics, the volume presents basic research on hepatic transport mechanisms, intrahepatic cholestasis and gall-stone disease, which serves as a background for the topics more specifically concerning the assessment of liver function. Much of the book is then devoted to the management of the commonest forms of liver diseases and their complications, such as chronic active hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, hepatorenal syndrome, and ascites.
