Book excerpt: To assess the impact of thermal discharges from power plants into large bodies of water such as a lake, it is necessary to know mixing characteristics and temperature distributions. Such information is often obtained by simulating the phenomenon in a small scale model in the laboratory (physical model). Invariably, the physical models are distorted because of the use of different geometric scales for the horizontal and vertical directions. This study evaluated the effect of geometric distortion by studying thermal discharge processes in a model with and without distortion.
