Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ship bridge/shiphandling simulators are becoming increasingly recognized as a potentially beneficial training medium for attaining a number of selected deck officer skills. The utilization of such simulators for marine pilot training began several years ago in Europe. This report describes the conduct and evaluation of a prototype simulator-based training program administered to twelve (12) U.S. pilots from several different pilot associations. The ship bridge/shiphandling simulator located at the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF) was employed during the research. The prototype training program was designed to evaluate (a) the potential effectiveness of simulator-based training for pilots, (b) several specific skill areas for which simulator-based training appears appropriate and (c) the impact of pilot experience on the benefits to be derived from such training. Keywords: Marine pilot training; Rate-of-turn indicator; Doppler speed log; RACONS; Emergency shiphandling.

This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large ships transporting hazardous cargoes, notorious marine accidents, and damage to marine ecosystems from tanker spills have heightened public concern for the safe navigation of ships. This new volume offers a complete, highly readable assessment of marine navigation and piloting. It addresses the application of new technology to reduce the probability of accidents, controversies over the effectiveness of waterways management and marine pilotage, and navigational decisionmaking. The book also explores the way pilots of ships and tugs are trained, licensed, and held accountable. Minding the Helm approaches navigational safety from the perspectives of risk assessment and the integration of human, technological, and organizational systems. Air and marine traffic regulation methods are compared, including the use of vessel traffic services. With a store of current information and examples, this document will be indispensable to federal and state pilotage and licensing authorities and marine traffic regulators, the Coast Guard, pilot associations, and the shipping and towing industries. It will also interest individuals involved in waterway design, marine education, and the marine environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-time, interactive ship simulators limped onto the scene, in the wake of flight simulators, some years ago. The maritime industries have a long history of conservatism, but this is now changing rapidly. The information age has also swept over ships and shipping, and has been taken to heart to such an extent that, for example, flight simulators now cooperate with ship simulators and import useful new concepts and methodologies. The more than 50 papers contained in this book show what and why. Although traditionally conservative, the marine world is also traditionally international and this has not changed. The papers in the book are by leading authors from all over the world and provide a detailed snap-shot of the rapidly advancing state-of-the-art, together with pointers to the future. The overall theme of MARSIM '96 and therefore also of this book is: Vessel manouevrability and marine simulation research, training and assessment, and includes original papers on topics such as bridge resource management, distant learning and simulators coupled via The Internet, virtual reality, neural networks, rudder-propeller hydrodynamics, prime mover models, squat in shallow water, and many more.

Download or read book Handbook of Simulator Based Training written by Eric Farmer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in simulation technology have enabled an interesting amount of training and instruction to be conducted on training simulators instead of on real systems. However, experiences with the procurement and use of training simulators has not always been as successful, often owing to a lack of knowledge of didactics and of training programme development, and also to inadequate simulator specifications. The Handbook of Simulator-based Training represents the first comprehensive overview of the European state of the art in simulator-based training. It also comprises a well-founded and systematic approach to simulator-based training and the specification of simulator requirements. The multi-disciplinary research project described in this book combines the expertise of specialists in human factors, information systems, system design and engineering from 23 research and industrial organizations from five countries - France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the UK. The authors have synthesized and documented the project results to ensure that this handbook provides not only many valuable guidelines, but more importantly a common frame of reference. It will be a key resource for the many specialists who are concerned with simulator-based training: researchers, engineers, and users; military training institutes and training system development departments; military staff responsible for the procurement of training devices and simulators; the simulator industry; the training research community; and the human factors and ergonomics community.
