Book Experimental Deformation of Hornblende and Amphibolite

Download or read book Experimental Deformation of Hornblende and Amphibolite written by Thomas P. Rooney and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibolite and hornblende were deformed in shear type apparatus, with over 200 tests run at conditions to 80 kb and 900C. Intragranular deformation was observed as undulatory extinction, deformation twins and kink bands. Kink band geometry tentatively establishes the slip system as T = (100), t = c. Shear strength at low temperatures, high pressures, and fast strain rates (27C, 40-50 kb, 0.10/sec), ranges between 11.6 and 12.8 kb for both hornblende and amphibolite. At 900C, shear strength decreases to less than 5 kb. Only thermally activated weakening manifests in shear tests. (Author).

Book Investigation on Deformation in Amphibole and Amphibole Bearing Xenoliths from the Kimberlite Bearing Diatremes on the Colorado Plateau

Download or read book Investigation on Deformation in Amphibole and Amphibole Bearing Xenoliths from the Kimberlite Bearing Diatremes on the Colorado Plateau written by Anna T. Gavasci and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibole from metagabbros from campello Monti, Novara (Italy) show ductile deformation as twinning on ( -1,0,1) similarly to experimentally deformed hornblende and tremolite. In nature the most common deformation of amphibole is of the brittle type. This study proves that ductile type of deformation is also possible in a natural environment. Undulatory extinction is common, twinning and deformation lamellae are extremely rare, and, as far as the author is aware, they have not been previously reported. (Author).

There are results of P-T experiments, thermochemical and computer modelling techniques. The principal modes of occurrence are described in the paragenesis sections emphasizing correlations with chemistry.

Book Constant Strain rate Deformation of Amphibole Minerals

Download or read book Constant Strain rate Deformation of Amphibole Minerals written by Thomas Peter Rooney and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amphibole minerals, hornblende and tremolite in single-crystal and polycrystalline form, were deformed in compression at confining pressures from 5 to 20 kb and temperatures from 27 to 1200C at a strain rate of 10 to the minus 5th power/sec. Twinning on (( -1),0,1) is the major ductile deformation mechanism below 800C at all confining pressures. Although among the strongest silicates thus far measured, amphiboles show two major weakening mechanisms at elevated temperatures and confining pressures. (Author).

Book A Practical Guide to Rock Microstructure

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Rock Microstructure written by Ron H. Vernon and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-10-07 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock microstructures provide clues for the interpretation of rock history. A good understanding of the physical or structural relationships of minerals and rocks is essential for making the most of more detailed chemical and isotopic analyses of minerals. Ron Vernon discusses the basic processes responsible for the wide variety of microstructures in igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic and deformed rocks, using high-quality colour illustrations. He discusses potential complications of interpretation, emphasizing pitfalls, and focussing on the latest techniques and approaches. Opaque minerals (sulphides and oxides) are referred to where appropriate. The comprehensive list of relevant references will be useful for advanced students wishing to delve more deeply into problems of rock microstructure. Senior undergraduate and graduate students of mineralogy, petrology and structural geology will find this book essential reading, and it will also be of interest to students of materials science.

Book Mechanical Twinning in Experimentally and Naturally Deformed Hornblende

Download or read book Mechanical Twinning in Experimentally and Naturally Deformed Hornblende written by Thomas Peter Rooney and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lamellar features in naturally deformed hornblende are identical to ( -1,01) mechanical twinning produced experimentally. Although plastic deformation features in amphiboles from tectonities are probably rare, where present, twinning may be a useful indicator of principal stress directions. (Author).

Book Rock Deformation from Field Experiments and Theory

Download or read book Rock Deformation from Field Experiments and Theory written by D.R. Faulkner and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2015-10-26 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ernie Rutter has made, and continues to make, a significant impact in the field of rock deformation. He has studied brittle and plastic deformation processes that occur within both the oceanic and continental crust, as well as other key properties such as the permeability and seismic velocities of these rocks. His approach has been one that integrates field observations, laboratory experiments and theoretical analyses. This volume celebrates Ernie's key contribution to rock deformation and structural geology by bringing together a collection of papers that represent this broad approach. The papers within the volume address key issues that remain within these fields. These range from fundamental studies of brittle and plastic behaviour along with the resultant structures and microstructures from both the field and laboratory, to applied problems where a better understanding of the deformation and properties of the crust is still needed.

Book The Brittle Ductile Transition in Rocks

Download or read book The Brittle Ductile Transition in Rocks written by Al G. Duba and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1990 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 56. "The roses seem to have a mildew," Lucy said as I drank my morning coffee. "I'll ask Hugh about it," flashed through my mind, but not past my lips since he's been dead for over two years. I wonder if this isn't typical for his friends and colleagues. Hugh's ability and willingness to help, his unselfish cooperation not just in research but in life, are what made him special to those who worked closely with him. Many who read this volume are familiar with the varied contributions he made to rock mechanics and to high?]pressure research. Consistent with his reputation, the things that impressed me when I first worked with Hugh in 1969 were his enthusiasm for work and his ability to keep pressure systems working well. Although these qualities still come to mind when I think of Hugh, the thing that usually remains is a warm feeling of pleasure at having been his friend and shared part of his life.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461250668
  • Pages : 302 pages

Download or read book Metamorphic Reactions written by A.B. Thompson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume in this series consists of eleven chapters. The first five deal with more theoretical aspects of the kinetics and mechanisms of meta morphic reactions, and the next six consider the interdependence of defor mation and metamorphism. All papers deal with natural processes that inter act on various time scales and with different degrees of mass and heat transfer. Consequently, many fundamental axioms of metamorphic petrol ogy and structural geology are questioned both for their accuracy and their usefulness. In raising such questions, most contributors have pointed to ways in which the answers could be forthcoming from appropriate experi mental studies or observations on natural materials. In their discussion of how order/disorder can influence mineral assem blages, Carpenter and Putnis emphasize that metastable crystal growth is common in metamorphic systems and state' 'there may be some reluctance (among many earth scientists) to accept that significant departures from equilibrium could occur." On the basis of presented evidence, they question whether reactions ever occur close to an equilibrium boundary. The neces sity for pressure or temperature overstepping is also required by nucleation rate theory. In any case, the degree of order is severely influenced by these kinetic effects in igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic environments.
