Book Experimental Data Acquisition and Quantitative Visualization of Turbulent Jet Mixing Layers

Download or read book Experimental Data Acquisition and Quantitative Visualization of Turbulent Jet Mixing Layers written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This AFOSR/DURIP sponsored funding was used to upgrade the data acquisition, graphics and image processing capabilities of the Turbulence Research Laboratory (TRL) of the State University of New York at Buffalo. The proposed upgrades were of immediate benefit to the research sponsored by AFOSR (Investigation into the Dynamics of the Jet Mixing Layer) as well as a number of on-going and anticipated investigations. The AFOSR sponsored effort enhanced on-going research using 138 hot-wire probes to investigate the dynamics of the jet mixing layer. The hot-wires are used to obtain simultaneous data at 138 positions so that the instantaneous velocity profiles can be reconstructed using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The complexity of the data acquisition required for this number of probes has been considerably simplified. In spite of this, the demands on the data acquisition system and the experimenter are enormous, especially with regard to calibration and post-data-acquisition validation, visualization and processing of the data. The equipment purchased both addressed the immediate research needs, and considerably enhanced the ability of the Turbulence Research Laboratory to meet the needs of the university and regional technical community.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Ducted Reactive Turbulent Jet Mixing with Recirculation

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Ducted Reactive Turbulent Jet Mixing with Recirculation written by D. E. Chriss and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of ducted, two stream, subsonic, reactive, turbulent jet mixing with recirculation was conducted. A primary jet of air at a mass flow rate of 0.075 lb/sec and velocity of 700 ft/sec was surrounded by an outer, low velocity, hydrogen stream. Data were obtained with hydrogen-air ratios of 0.143 and 0.107. The duct-to-inner nozzle diameter ratio was ten. Radial distributions of hydrogen mass fraction, mean axial velocity, turbulence intensity, and total pressure as well as axial distributions of wall hydrogen mass fraction and wall static pressure are presented for axial stations from one-half to five duct diameters from the nozzle exit plane. Comparison of the experimental data with calculations assuming frozen or equilibrium chemistry indicate that he measured velocity, pressure, and composition data are, in general, self-consistent. The maximum turbulent intensities which occurred in the center of the mixing layer and within the recirculation eddy were very high having values of 20 percent of the jet exit velocity. The velocity and composition field indicate that, while and mixing in the reactive flow field is slower than for the nonreactive case, the reaction had little effect on the size and location of the recirculation zone within the mixing duct.

Book Unified Analysis of Turbulent Jet Mixing

Download or read book Unified Analysis of Turbulent Jet Mixing written by Joseph A. Schetz and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents a unified model for the eddy viscosity in jet mixing flows. The successful boundary layer model due to Clauser is given a new interpretation that permits generalization to a wide variety of turbulent flows.

Book Integrated Computational experimental Study of Turbulence Modification and Mixing Enhancement in Swirling Jets

Download or read book Integrated Computational experimental Study of Turbulence Modification and Mixing Enhancement in Swirling Jets written by Jonathan Wayne Naughton and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Swirling jet flows have been studied experimentally and computationally and the results have been compared with theory. Three-component Laser Doppler Anemometry (LDA) measurements have been carried out for swirling jets of various strengths and swirl distributions. Radial profiles of velocity have been obtained from the jet exit to 50 diameters downstream. The experimental results are consistent with previous results and with similarity theory for weakly swirling turbulent jets. However, the parametric range and spatial domain of the current data set makes it suitable for validation. Computational simulations have also been performed using a combination of Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and Large Eddy Simulation (LES) approaches. The results have been validated with experimental data and used to explore the mechanisms behind the increased mixing enhancement observed. The combined experimental/computational effort is still ongoing, but the experiences to date have demonstrated the effectiveness of such an approach.

Download or read book Turbulent Jets and Plumes written by Joseph Hun-wei Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jets and plumes are shear flows produced by momentum and buoyancy forces. Examples include smokestack emissions, fires and volcano eruptions, deep sea vents, thermals, sewage discharges, thermal effluents from power stations, and ocean dumping of sludge. Knowledge of turbulent mixing by jets and plumes is important for environmental control, impact and risk assessment. Turbulent Jets and Plumes introduces the fundamental concepts and develops a Lagrangian approach to model these shear flows. This theme persists throughout the text, starting from simple cases and building towards the practically important case of a turbulent buoyant jet in a density-stratified crossflow. Basic ideas are illustrated by ample use of flow visualization using the laser-induced fluorescence technique. The text includes many illustrative worked examples, comparisons of model predictions with laboratory and field data, and classroom tested problems. An interactive PC-based virtual-reality modelling software (VISJET) is also provided. Engineering and science students, researchers and practitioners may use the book both as an introduction to the subject and as a reference in hydraulics and environmental fluid mechanics.
