This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Contributions to the Toxicology of Rattle-Snake Venom Since the date of my Smithsonian essay and of a pamphlet on the treatment of snake bites, which I published in the North Amer. Med. Chir. Rev., March, 1861, I have suspected that in at least one point I was partly, and in another, altogether wrong, so that it became an imperative duty to correct my former experiments by a second, and more careful examination of the dubious conclusions which I had committed to print. As usually happens with those who question Nature by the fertile method of experiment, I was gradually led aside into by-paths, which proved to be of the utmost interest, so that, besides the questions with which I started, I have found myself able to answer many others of equal, and some of far greater interest. Perhaps the most valuable of all of the conclusions which I have reached in this present research, regards the ultimate mode in which the venom affects the economy of animals. My friend, Professor Dalton, in his eloquent defence of vivisection, has been pleased to allude, in very flattering language, to my former research, as an example of the value of that method; or, rather, of the use of animal life in scientific research. The present investigation has also been conducted at the cost of a large expenditure of the lives of birds, dogs and rabbits, for which I am responsible to my own conscience, and to the Maker, who has endowed us with the will and the power to search into the secrets of His universe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Researches Upon the Venom of the Rattlesnake: With an Investigation of the Anatomy and Physiology of the Organs Concerned My thanks are due to the Smithsonian Institution, without the aid of which I should have been unable to procure the serpents which were essential to my purposes. The historical references and the Bibliography owe much to the manuscript notes of Prof. John Le Conte, which were collected with much care and labor, that they might be used in a research which he at one time contemplated. Becoming aware of the investigation in which I was engaged, he most liberally placed at my dis posal this collection of literary materials. To Drs. Brinton and Kane I am greatly obliged for intelligent assistance in numerous experimental investigations, for which their ready surgical skill so well fitted them, and I am also in debt to Messrs. Cantrell and Picot, for like aid, which, owing to the nature of the service, was not always free from danger. My thanks are further due to Drs. La Roche and Stille, to Dr. Fisher, the librarian of the Academy of Natural Sciences, and to Dr. T. H. Bache, the librarian of the College of Physicians, whose assistance in consulting its extensive collection of American journals has been to me of great service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts, Observations, and Experiments on the Action of Snake Venom on the Blood: With an Appendix In the year 1867, Sir James Paget communicated to the British Medical Journal two papers written by me - one of July 20, the other December 21. Sir James, in forwarding the last communication, wrote I hope you will deem it right to publish this for the facts are very strange - so strange, that it may be well for me to add that Professor Halford, writing to me, says, that I may depend on the patience and fear of error with which he has worked at them. Book Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles

Download or read book Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles written by Stephen P. Mackessy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A decade after publication of the first edition, Handbook of Venoms and Toxins of Reptiles responds to extensive changes in the field of toxinology to endure as the most comprehensive review of reptile venoms on the market. The six sections of this new edition, which has nearly doubled in size, complement the original handbook by presenting current information from many of the leading researchers and physicians in toxinology, with topics ranging from functional morphology, evolution and ecology to crystallography, -omics technologies, drug discovery and more. With the recent recognition by the World Health Organization of snakebite as a neglected tropical disease, the section on snakebite has been expanded and includes several chapters dealing with the problem broadly and with new technologies and the promises these new approaches may hold to counter the deleterious effects of envenomation. This greatly expanded handbook offers a unique resource for biologists, biochemists, toxicologists, physicians, clinicians, and epidemiologists, as well as informed laypersons interested in the biology of venomous reptiles, the biochemistry and molecular biology of venoms, and the effects and treatment of human envenomation.

Book Venomous Reptiles and Their Toxins

Download or read book Venomous Reptiles and Their Toxins written by Bryan Fry and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Venom research and technology has advanced greatly, rapidly transforming our knowledge of reptile venoms. Research advances, like the development of molecular systematics, provide the framework necessary to reconstruct the evolutionary history of glands and fangs. Such research developments have expanded our understanding of venom's evolution and its usefulness in therapeutic development. The results of this punctuated toxin molecular evolutionary expansion include protein neofunctionalization. While these changes may impact antivenom efficacy, this molecular diversity also facilitates their usefulness in the development of novel drug therapies. Venomous Reptiles And Their Toxins brings together the world's leading toxinologists in this comprehensive study of the entire scope of reptile venoms, from clinical effects to evolution to drug design and development. The book contains detailed applied chapters on clinical care of the envenomed patient, ineffective traditional or modern remedies, occupational considerations involved in the maintenance of institutional venomous reptile collections, veterinary care for venomous reptiles and research methods used in venom research. This book also devotes a chapter to each toxin class found in reptile venoms, detailing the full trajectory of research on the peptide or protein in question. These chapters discuss each toxin's respective role in the envenomation process through to how each has been explored for their biomedical potential. This book is a unique resource for anyone working with venomous reptiles.

Download or read book Snake Venoms written by P. Gopalakrishnakone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the field of Toxinology has expanded substantially. On the one hand it studies venomous animals, plants and micro organisms in detail to understand their mode of action on targets. While on the other, it explores the biochemical composition, genomics and proteomics of toxins and venoms to understand their three interaction with life forms (especially humans), development of antidotes and exploring their pharmacological potential. Therefore, Toxinology has deep linkages with biochemistry, molecular biology, anatomy and pharmacology. In addition, there is a fast developing applied subfield, clinical toxinology, which deals with understanding and managing medical effects of toxins on human body. Given the huge impact of toxin-based deaths globally, and the potential of venom in generation of drugs for so-far incurable diseases (for example, Diabetes, Chronic Pain), the continued research and growth of the field is imminent. This has led to the growth of research in the area and the consequent scholarly output by way of publications in journals and books. Despite this ever growing body of literature within biomedical sciences, there is still no all-inclusive reference work available that collects all of the important biochemical, biomedical and clinical insights relating to Toxinology. The Handbook of Toxinology aims to address this gap and cover the field of Toxinology comprehensively.

Book It All Depends on the Dose

Download or read book It All Depends on the Dose written by Ole Peter Grell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume to take a broad historical sweep of the close relation between medicines and poisons in the Western tradition, and their interconnectedness. They are like two ends of a spectrum, for the same natural material can be medicine or poison, depending on the dose, and poisons can be transformed into medicines, while medicines can turn out to be poisons. The book looks at important moments in the history of the relationship between poisons and medicines in European history, from Roman times, with the Greek physician Galen, through the Renaissance and the maverick physician Paracelsus, to the present, when poisons are actively being turned into beneficial medicines.

Book Clinical Toxinology in Australia Europe and Americas

Download or read book Clinical Toxinology in Australia Europe and Americas written by Carl-Wilhelm Vogel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 605 pages.
