Book Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers

Download or read book Experimental Characterization of Bend and Microbend Losses in Singlemode Fibers written by A. O. Garg and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bend and microbend performance of various singlemode optical fibers with matched cladding are investigated. Microbending sensitivity is determined with both a sandpaper test and a new test that uses wire mesh. The new test is found to have certain advantages. In particular, the mesh test can be carried out on bare fibers; therefore the intrinsic sensitivity of fibers to microbending can be characterized directly, without concern about the influence of coatings. Such bare fiber results are also reported. (Author).

Book Simulation Study of Bending and Microbending Losses

Download or read book Simulation Study of Bending and Microbending Losses written by Roy Preangka and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now-a-day's optical fiber forms the basis for local, national and telecommunication network. It is broadly used in communication system instead of electrical copper cables because of its small size, very high bandwidth and low transmission loss. But it has always some chances to loss the transmitting signal. Bending is one of the permanent reasons to loss of the transmitting signal. It can increase the fiber attenuation by two mechanisms: macrobending and microbending. Macrobend occurs when a fiber is bent through a large angle and microbend can be generated at any stage during the manufacturing process or service. For these cases, entire signals do not reach the receiver. We perform a simulation study for bending losses in a single mode optical fiber. Single mode fibers are commonly used in communication system than multimode fibers because of its least attenuation and low dispersion. The study has been done using the software "Understanding Fiber Optics on a PC." We find a minimum loss of 0.0 dB for the wavelength of 1.3um, core radius of 4.0 um, refractive index difference of 0.35% and bend radius of 7 cm. This result may be an important milestone to design an optical fiber."

Book Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook

Download or read book Specialty Optical Fibers Handbook written by Alexis Mendez and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive contributed volume that aims to describe and explain the design, fabrication, operating characteristics, and specific applications of the most popular and useful types of specialty optical fibers. These “specialty fibers include any kind of optical fiber that has been architecturally manipulated to diverge from a conventional structure. For instance, metal-coated fibers can be utilized for bandwidth improvement, and hollow core fibers offer more controllable dispersion for sensitive medical procedures. Applications for these specialty fibers abound in the biomedical, sensors, and industrial fields, as well as in more traditional communications capacities. This book will act as a specialty fiber “guided tour, hosted by the top names in the discipline. The globally renowned editors, Drs. Mendez and Morse, have extensive experience in research, academia, and industry. *Completely covers biomedical and industrial sensor technology with emphasis on real world applications *Comparative studies of pros and cons of all fiber types with relation to test and measurement, mechanical properties and strength, and reliability *Easy to access essential facts and details at the begining of each chapter

Download or read book Single Mode Fibers written by Ernst-Georg Neumann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single-mode fibers are the most advanced means of transmitting information, since they provide extremely low attenuation and very high bandwidths. At present, long distance communication by single-mode fibers is cheaper than by conventional copper cables, and in the future single-mode fibers will also be used in the subscriber loop. Since single-mode fibers have many applications, a variety of people need to understand this modern transmission medium. How ever, waveguiding in single-mode fibers is much more difficult to understand than waveguiding in copper lines. A single-mode fiber is a dielectric waveguide operated at optical wave lengths. Since 1961, I have been involved in experimental and theoretical re search on dielectric rod waveguides in the microwave region. From the experi ments, I learned much about the properties of a wave guided by a dielectric rod or a glass fiber, especially about its behavior at waveguide discontinuities like bends, gaps, or the waveguide end. Since 1972, my co-workers and I have also been investigating dielectric waveguides at optical frequencies, and since 1973 I have lectured on "Optical Communications". These activities have shown that there is a need for a tutorial introduction to the new technical field of single mode fibers. In this book the physical fundamentals are emphasized and the mathematics is limited to the absolutely necessary subjects. Besides presenting a physical explanation of waveguiding in single-mode fibers, it is also the aim of this book to give an overview of the knowledge accumulated in this field.
