Book Experimental and Theoretical Study of Strength and Stability of Soil

Download or read book Experimental and Theoretical Study of Strength and Stability of Soil written by A.Z. Khasanov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work presents the experimental results of the strength of sands and clay soils in the following conditions: plane shear, triaxial stress state, with passive and active loading. The obtained experimental results are compared with existing theories of strength and the reasons for their non-conformity are identified. Experimental data on the determination of the position of shear surfaces with active and passive resistance of soils is analysed. A new concept of the theory of soil strength is considered, which allows to take into account the fundamental parameters of the strength of soils: the angle of internal friction, specific adhesion, and lateral pressure ratio. Given analytical expressions allow one to determine the stress state at the sites rejected with respect to the main stresses. The definition of the physical essence of the concept of lateral pressure coefficient for soils is given. Also described are the results of experiments to determine the critical load on soil having the shape of a truncated cone, where the angles of deflection of the shear surfaces have been experimentally determined, on the basis of which analytical expressions have been obtained that allow prediction of the critical load. The book provides methods for solving various geotechnical problems using the theory of soil strength proposed by the authors. The book is intended for professionals working in the fields of soil mechanics and geotechnics, as well as for students and academics in engineering, earth and soil sciences and construction.

Book Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils

Download or read book Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils written by Yehuda Klausner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Continuum Mechanics of Soils provides a long-needed general scheme for the study of the important yet problematic material of soil. It closes the gap between two disciplines, soil mechanics and con- tinuum mechanics, showing that the familiar concepts of soil mechanics evolve directly from continuum mechanics. It confirms concepts such as pore pressures, cohesion and dependence of the shear stress on consolidation, and rejects the view that continuum mechanics cannot be applied to a material such as soil. The general concepts of continuum mechanics, field equations and constitutive equations are discussed. It is shown how the theory of mixtures evolves from these equations and how, along with energetics and irrevers- ible thermodynamics, it can be applied to soils. The discussion also sheds light on some aspects of mechanics of materials, especially compressible materials. Examples are the introduction of the Hencky measure of strain, the requirement of dual constitutive equations, and the dependence of the spent internal energy on the stored internal energy. Researchers in engineering mechanics and material sciences may find that the results of experiments on soils can be generalized and extended to other materials. The book is a reference text for students familiar with the fundamentals of mechanics, for scholars of soil engineering, and for soil scientists. It is also suitable as an advanced undergraduate course in soil mechanics.

Book Groundwater induced geological disasters in underground engineering Theoretical experimental and numerical approaches

Download or read book Groundwater induced geological disasters in underground engineering Theoretical experimental and numerical approaches written by Shengli Yang and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water inrush (WI) is one of the most dangerous geological disasters in underground engineering, with significant human casualties and economic losses. To prevent and control WI disasters, great efforts have been made to address WI mechanisms for more than half a century. In particular, the seepage instability theory is hitherto one of the most widely used theoretical models. This theory portrays that the seepage system will undergo structural instability when the initial values of permeability and boundary pressure meet certain conditions, which manifests that the permeability parameter is one of the most valuable indicators to unveil WI mechanisms. However, rock permeability is determined by its internal structural characteristics, which can be affected by water chemical composition, stress environment, and temperature. In this regard, it is of great necessity and importance to facilitate a better understanding of the holistic impacts of multi-field coupling on rock internal structure and deformation failure characteristics. This Research Topic aims to initiate a global forum for presenting and disseminating the latest advancements of WI mechanisms, which entails the characterization of physical and laboratory tests, 3D reconstruction of rock internal structure, numerical approaches, theoretical models under multi-field coupling, and filed date analysis methods.

Book Unsaturated Soils

Download or read book Unsaturated Soils written by E. J. Murray and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of the mechanical properties of unsaturated soilsis crucial for geotechnical engineers worldwide, as well as tothose concerned with the interaction of structures with the ground. This book deals principally with fine-grained clays and silts, orsoils containing coarser sand and gravel particles but with asignificant percentage of fines. The study of unsaturated soil is a practical subject, linkingfundamental science to nature. Soils in general are inherentlyvariable and their behaviour is not easy to analyse or predict, andunsaturated soils raise the complexity to a higher level. Evenamongst practicing engineers, there is often lack of awareness ofthe intricacies of the subject. This book offers a perspective ofunsaturated soils based on recent research and demonstrates howthis dovetails with the general discipline of soil mechanics. Following an introduction to the basic soil variables, thephases, the phase interactions and the relevance of soil structure,an up-to-date review of laboratory testing techniques is presented. This includes suction measurement and control techniques intriaxial cell testing. This is followed by an introduction tostress state variables, critical state and theoretical models inunsaturated soils. A detailed description of the thermodynamic principles asapplied to multi-phase materials under equilibrium conditionsfollows. These principles are then used to explore and develop afundamental theoretical basis for analysing unsaturated soils. Soilstructure is broken down into its component parts to developequations describing the dual stress regime. The critical statestrength and compression characteristics of unsaturated soils areexamined and it is shown how the behaviour may be viewed as athree-dimensional model in dimensionless stress-volume space. Theanalysis is then extended to the work input into unsaturated soilsand the development of conjugate stress, volumetric andstrain-increment variables. These are used to examine themicromechanical behaviour of kaolin specimens subjected to triaxialshear strength tests and lead to observations not detectable byother means. Unsaturated Soils: A fundamental interpretation of soilbehaviour covers a rapidly advancing area of study, researchand engineering practice and offers a deeper appreciation of thekey characteristics of unsaturated soil. It provides students andresearchers with a framework for understanding soil behaviour anddemonstrates how to interpret experimental strength and compressiondata. provides engineers with a deeper appreciation of keycharacteristics of unsaturated soils covers a rapidly advancing area of study, research andengineering practice provides students and researchers a framework for understandingsoil behaviour shows how to interpret experimental data on strength andcompression the limited number of books on the subject are all out ofdate

Book excerpt: This book is addressed primarily to civil engineers familiar with such traditional topics as strength of materials, soil mechanics, and theory of elasticity and structures, but less familiar with the modern development of the mathematical theory of soil plasticity necessary to any engineer working under the general heading of nonlinear analysis of soil-structure system. This book will satisfy his needs in the case of the soil medium. It introduces the reader to the theory of soil plasticity and its numerical implementation into computer programs. The theory and method of computer implementation presented here are appropriate for solving nonlinear static dynamic problems in soil mechanics and are applicable for finite difference and finite element computer codes. A sample computer model subroutine is developed and this is used to study some typical soil mechanics problems. With its comprehensive coverage and simple, concise presentation, the book will undoubtedly prove to be very useful for consulting engineers, research and graduate students in geotechnical engineering.
