Book Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Wave Propagation in Granular Rock and Porous Media

Download or read book Experimental and Theoretical Studies of Wave Propagation in Granular Rock and Porous Media written by Martin H. Sadd and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical study of wave propagation in granular, rock an porous media is described. The wave propagation is a result of explosive loadings of 50-100 micro seconds duration. Specific wave propagational variables include the wave speed, inter-granular contact forces (local wave amplitude) and wave spreading geometries. The relationship of the media microstructure to these propagational variables has been studied for a variety of granular and porous materials. Wave propagation; Granular media; Microstructural media; Dynamic photomechanics; Distinct element method; Rock mechanics & porous media. (JES).

Book Experimental Rock Deformation The Brittle Field

Download or read book Experimental Rock Deformation The Brittle Field written by M. S. Paterson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph deals with the part of the field of ex-' perimental rock deformation that is dominated by the phenomena of brittle fracture on one scale or another. Thus a distinction has been drawn between the fields of brittle und ductile behaviour in rock, corresponding more or less to a distinction between the phenomena of fracture and flow. It is hoped eventually to present a survey of the ductile field in a separate volume. The last chapter of this volume deals with the transition between the two fields. The scope of this survey has been limited to the mec.hanical properties of rock viewed as a material on the laboratory scale. Thus, the topic and approach is of a "materials science" kind rather than of a "structures" kind. We are dealing with only one part of the wider field of rock mechanics, which also includes structural or boundary value problems, for example, those of the stability of slopes, the collapse of mine openings, earth quakes, the folding of stratified rock, and the convec tive motion of the earth's mantle. One topic thus ex cluded is the role of jointing, which it is commonly necessary to take into account in applications in engi neering and mining, and probably often in geology too.

Book Experimental and Theoretical Study of Fluid Flow in Rocks

Download or read book Experimental and Theoretical Study of Fluid Flow in Rocks written by J. B. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permeability may be altered in the Earth by plastic flow of the rock matrix. To better understand the relation between plastic flow and pore geometry, we measured the permeability of a suite of hot-pressed calcite samples with differing porosities. We found the permeability dramatically decreased with decreasing porosity, particularly in the range of 10 to 4% total porosity. These results agree with a model for pore geometry changes during hot-pressing as previously developed for ceramics. Measurements of unconnected and interconnected porosity showed that the interconnected porosity virtually disappeared in samples with a total porosity of 4% or less. SEM observations showed that porosities of samples above 10% total porosity were composed of large 'spheroidal' pores, often connected by 'tubular' pores. During the last stage of hot-pressing, these 'tubes' are thought to collapse, making the pore network disconnected. A new approach has been developed by which changes in rock stress can be measured directly. The measurement of stress change depends on the reaction of a slender, compliant cavity to the transient variations of rock stress about the cavity. A liquid-filled pressurized cell, emplaced in the cavity, provides the means by which changes in pressure can be monitored. Earthquake-related variations in the stress field in a highly fractured quartz-monzonite stock have been observed to occur in a characteristic way prior to a microseismic event. The precursory stress change (decompression followed by compression) lasted about five hours and led directly a stress drop of 15 millibars. (EDC).

Book The Method of Characteristics for Stress Wave Propagation in the Rock Mass

Download or read book The Method of Characteristics for Stress Wave Propagation in the Rock Mass written by Lifeng Fan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-11-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written by subject experts based on the latest research results on the characteristic line method of stress wave propagation in rock masses. It establishes a framework for stress wave propagation analysis methods under three levels of rocks, joints and rock masses. It introduces the two-characteristic line method for stress wave propagation in rocks, and further illustrates the modified characteristic line method for stress wave propagation in complex jointed rock masses. The split three-characteristic line method was proposed for stress wave propagation in rock masses with macro-joints and micro-defects. The book focuses on the basic theory, and highlights the ideas, methods and steps to solve the problem of stress wave propagation in rock masses. This book can be used as a reference book for researchers of research institutes engaged in analyzing, predicting and controlling dynamic stability in rock, geological, and mining engineering.

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 1996-08-27
  • ISBN : 0309049962
  • Pages : 568 pages

Download or read book Rock Fractures and Fluid Flow written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-08-27 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fracturesâ€"a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storageâ€"has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.
