Book Single Piles in Liquefiable Ground

Download or read book Single Piles in Liquefiable Ground written by Rui Wang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the seismic response of piles in liquefiable ground. It describes the design of a three-dimensional, unified plasticity model for large post-liquefaction shear deformation of sand, formulated and implemented for parallel computing. It also presents a three-dimensional, dynamic finite element analysis method for piles in liquefiable ground, developed on the basis of this model,. Employing a combination of case analysis, centrifuge shaking table experiments and numerical simulations using the proposed methods, it demonstrates the seismic response patterns of single piles in liquefiable ground. These include basic force-resistance mode, kinematic and inertial interaction coupling mechanism and major influence factors. It also discusses a beam on the nonlinear Winkler foundation (BNWF) solution and a modified neutral plane solution developed and validated using centrifuge experiments for piles in consolidating and reconsolidating ground. Lastly, it studies axial pile force and settlement during post-earthquake reconsolidation, showing pile axial force to be irrelevant in the reconsolidation process, while settlement is process dependent.

Book The Nonlinear Coupled Response of Single and Group Piles Under Various Horizontal Excitations

Download or read book The Nonlinear Coupled Response of Single and Group Piles Under Various Horizontal Excitations written by Bappaditya Manna and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic response characteristics of reinforced concrete single piles and 2 × 2 group piles subjected to varying levels of horizontal harmonic excitation are investigated by both experimental and analytical study. Two different types of coupled vibration tests, namely, type 1--horizontal exciting force above the center of gravity (c.g.), and type 2--horizontal exciting force below the c.g. of the pile cap-loading system, are conducted in the field. The tests are conducted for different eccentricities to determine the frequency-amplitude response of piles for horizontal and rocking motion separately. The influence of excitation intensity, static load on pile, spacing of piles in group, and different contact condition of pile cap with soil on the coupled dynamic response of piles are reported. The measured responses of type 1 and type 2 are compared with the results obtained by the continuum approach of Novak with nonlinear solution. For nonlinear analysis, the boundary zone concept, which accounts for yielding of soil around the pile, is incorporated into the linear elastic-based model and the allowance is made for the separation between the pile and soil. A reasonable match between the measured and predicted response by nonlinear analysis has been observed after introducing appropriate boundary zone parameters and soil-pile separation length. The differences between the dynamic characteristics of piles for coupled vibration type 1 and type 2 in terms of frequency response curves for amplitude, stiffness, and damping constants are also discussed.

Book Analysis of Pile Foundations Subject to Static and Dynamic Loading

Download or read book Analysis of Pile Foundations Subject to Static and Dynamic Loading written by Amir M. Kaynia and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents computational tools and design principles for piles used in a wide range of applications and for different loading conditions. The chapters provide a mixture of basic engineering solutions and latest research findings in a balanced manner. The chapters are written by world-renowned experts in the field. The materials are presented in a unified manner based on both simplified and rigorous numerical methods. The first four chapters present the basic elements and steps in analysis of piles under static and cyclic loading together with clear references to the appropriate design regulations in Eurocode 7 when relevant. The analysis techniques cover conventional code-based methods, solutions based on pile-soil interaction springs, and advanced 3D finite element methods. The applications range from conventional piles to large circular steel piles used as anchors or monopiles in offshore applications. Chapters 5 to 10 are devoted to dynamic and earthquake analyses and design. These chapters cover a range of solutions from dynamic pile-soil springs to elasto-dynamic solutions of large pile groups. Both linear and nonlinear soil behaviours are considered along with response due to dynamic loads and earthquake shaking including possible liquefaction. The book is unique in its unified treatment of the solutions used for static and dynamic analysis of piles with practical examples of application. The book is considered a valuable tool for practicing engineers, graduate students and researchers.

Book Behaviour of Helical Pile Connectors for New Foundations

Download or read book Behaviour of Helical Pile Connectors for New Foundations written by Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Diab and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the wide application of the connections between slender pile types, which end with a mono steel bar at the ground level (e.g. helical piles and micro piles), and new reinforced concrete foundations with limited width (e.g. RC grade beams) in the piling industry in North America, neither a clear understanding of the connections' behaviour nor a specific design criteria for their implementation is presented. The main goal of this research was to clearly understand the behaviour of these connections and their failure mechanism under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The research methodology involved conducting experimental tests on 33 full-scale pile-foundation connections subjected to tension, compression, and shear loadings. The experimental results were used to calibrate a three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model that accurately simulated the structural behaviour and captured the possible failure modes of these connections. Based on the findings from the experimental and numerical investigations, analytical equations were developed to determine the connection capacity. Both the experimental and the numerical investigations confirmed that it is unsafe to ignore the connection capacity in the foundation design considering only the grade beam capacity. It was shown that the connection behaviour under tension and compression loadings can be represented by the behaviour of the reinforced concrete beams subjected to indirect shear loading, while the connection behaviour under shear loading can be represented by the behaviour of cast-in-place headed anchors subjected to shear loading. The connection behaviour was mainly affected by the concrete compressive strength, the pile embedment depth, the beam's reinforcement, the pile cap configurations, and some other variables depending on the type of loading. Cyclic compression loading had a limited effect on the connection behaviour, while alternating cyclic shear loading had a major effect on the connection behaviour. The developed connection design equations took into consideration the main factors affecting the connection behaviour under different cases of loading including cyclic loading and they were consistent with the recorded results from the experimental and numerical investigations. Finally, the research objectives were achieved by providing a design aid and design precautions for helical pile-RC grade beam connections design.
