Book Experimental and Analytical Investigations of Flows in Porous Media Final Report August 15 1993 August 15 1996

Download or read book Experimental and Analytical Investigations of Flows in Porous Media Final Report August 15 1993 August 15 1996 written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report consists first of a discussion of specific results. Following that is a discussion of important issues. During the period July 1993--present, the authors have developed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and other experimental techniques for the study of porous flow (Section 1). These techniques include fast spin echo methods and precision temperature control and measurements systems for use in the MRI environment. They have applied these techniques to extensive studies of Porous Media Convection (PMC) which they discuss below. Sections 2--4 summarize important experimental results, and Section 5 lists publications and related information. These studies clearly point to the need for improved models for porous flow. In related studies using a special kind of shadowgraph technique, they found corroborating support for the effects of microstructure on PMC and the need for improved models of porous flow, and of PMC in particular. They initially studied convective flows for pure fluids (water), and more recently, they have begun studies of miscible binary mixtures.

Book excerpt: Jim Douglas, Jr.' These proceedings reflect some of the thoughts expressed at the Oberwolfach Con ference on Porous Media held June 21-27, 1992, organized by Jim Douglas, Jr., Ulrich Hornung, and Cornelius J, van Duijn. Forty-five scientists attended the conference, and about thirty papers were presented. Fourteen manuscripts were submitted for the proceedings and are incorporated in this volume; they cover a number of aspects of flow and transport in porous media. Indeed, there are 223 individual references in the fourteen papers, but fewer than fifteen are cited in more than one paper. The papers appear in alphabetical order (on the basis of the first author). A brief introduction to each paper is given below. Allen and Curran consider a variety of questions related to the simulation of ground water contamination. Accurate water velocities are essential for acceptable results, and the authors apply mixed finite elements to the pressure equation to obtain these ve locities. Since fine grids are required to resolve heterogenei ties, standard iterative procedures are too slow for practical simulation; the authors introduce a parallelizable, multigrid-based it.erative scheme for the lowest order Raviart-Thomas mixed method. Contaminant transport is approximated through a finite element collocation procedure, and an alternating-direction, modified method of characteristics technique is employed to time-step the simulation. Computational experiments carried out on an nCube 2 computer.

Book A Method for Computing Unsteady Flows in Porous Media

Download or read book A Method for Computing Unsteady Flows in Porous Media written by R Raghavan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-contained and concise, this Research Note provides a basis to study unsteady flow in saturated porous media. It provides for the development of algorithms that examine three-dimensional flows subject to complicated boundary conditions that are a natural consequence of flow in geological systems. A new way to understand the flow in porous media is presented. The authors pay attention to computational considerations, and options for developing codes are addressed. The note consists of five chapters: the first is introductory; the second and third are devoted to showing how one arrives at the solutions of interest; the fourth chapter presents various reformulations to aid computations and presents a few illustrative examples; the fifth chapter is a natural progression of the first four chapters to more complicated visualizations of flow in porous media.

Book Modeling Flow Regimes in Porous Media

Download or read book Modeling Flow Regimes in Porous Media written by Rasoul Arabjamaloei and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this research, single phase flow regimes in porous media were studied both numerically and experimentally to determine methods to predict the effects of rarefied gas flow and inertial flow. The results of this research were initially compared with the convention methods of treating rarefied gas flow, the Klinkenberg equation and inertial flow, the Forchheimer equation. In the first section of the research, the slip condition for rarefied gas flow in low permeability, two-dimensional simple porous media was studied by the Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and new corrections to the Klinkenberg model and higher order slip models were investigated. To apply LBM, new corrections were introduced to the solid-fluid boundary condition and a new relationship was proposed to relate LBM viscosity and Knudsen number. To validate the LBM model, the slip flow simulation results were compared to analytical methods and experimentation. It was shown that the modified LBM simulator was capable of predicting the experimentally observed Knudsen minimum. By comparing the numerical simulation results with analytical models extracted from the up-to-date literature, the analytical model that most closely matched numerical model results was identified. In the second section of this research, the apparent permeability reduction due to inertial effects in simple and complex porous structures was studied. LBM based simulator was developed to model single-phase three-dimensional fluid flow in porous media. The simulator was verified by experimental and analytical solution tests and then was implemented to study high Reynolds number flow processes in irregular shaped porous structures. The effects of inertial on the onset and extent of non-Darcy flow in different geometries was studied. It was shown that the Forchheimer equation does not accurately fit the high Reynolds number flow. A new empirical correlation was proposed that correlates the scaled permeability and mass flow rate relationship very well and is more accurate than the Forchheimer equation. To validate the LBM, a modified experimental technique was designed and utilized to analyze permeability and mass flow rate relationships in high Reynolds number flows. The experimental results showed that the correlation in the present research is far more accurate than the Forchheimer equation.

Book Physics of Flow in Porous Media

Download or read book Physics of Flow in Porous Media written by Jens Feder and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An invaluable reference for graduate students and academic researchers, this book introduces the basic terminology, methods and theory of the physics of flow in porous media. Geometric concepts, such as percolation and fractals, are explained and simple simulations are created, providing readers with both the knowledge and the analytical tools to deal with real experiments. It covers the basic hydrodynamics of porous media and how complexity emerges from it, as well as establishing key connections between hydrodynamics and statistical physics. Covering current concepts and their uses, this book is of interest to applied physicists and computational/theoretical Earth scientists and engineers seeking a rigorous theoretical treatment of this topic. Physics of Flow in Porous Media fills a gap in the literature by providing a physics-based approach to a field that is mostly dominated by engineering approaches.

Book Experimental and Numerical Study of Non Darcy Flow Through Porous Media

Download or read book Experimental and Numerical Study of Non Darcy Flow Through Porous Media written by Rusen Sinir and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence effects in porous media have been well investigated in recent years. In this study, single phase porous media experiments were conducted to investigate coefficients of non-Darcy or Darcy-Forchheimer equation. Once they are defined in terms of flow conditions, they are used in volume averaged Navier-Stoke equations to model turbulence model. In the present study, eddy viscosity was not taken into account. Although eddy viscosity is not included in the model, Darcy-Forchheimer's coefficients are able to overcome turbulence effects in the media. Results of present study and similar literature works were compared and it was found out that they were in a good agreement. A new method of generating geometry of porous media was proposed. It is based on Immerse Boundary Method (IBM). First outputs of solver give reasonable and promising results but they should be validated with experimental data.
