Book excerpt: Ministers often find themselves caught in the day-to-day pressures of leading a congregation and yearn to experience the unfolding of their professional lives from a larger perspective. Four Seasons of Ministry serves as a guide for what you will find on your ministerial journey and gives meaning to the routine and repetitive tasks of ministry. Authors Bruce G. and Katherine Gould Epperly, each of whom has over 25 years of experience in various pastoral roles, invite clergy to see their ministries in the present as part of a life-long adventure in companionship with God, their loved ones, and their congregations. There is a time and a season to every ministry. Healthy and vital pastors look for the signs of the times and the gifts of each swiftly passing season, but they also take responsibility for engaging the creative opportunities of each season of ministry. Those who listen well to the gentle rhythm of God moving through their lives and the responsibilities and challenges that attend the passing of the years, vocationally as well as chronologically, will be amazed at the beauty and truth that shapes and characterizes the development of their ministries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional pastoral role has changed over the last decades, largely due to the growth of mega-churches. The senior pastor has tended to become more an executive leader with an emphasis on public preaching as the figurehead of a large organisation. The traditional pastoral role has been superseded in large part in these situations, with much of the regular pastoral role being performed by a range of associate pastors/elders with a primary function as pastors, with little if any preaching component. In the past, many churches did not have any pastoral assistance, and often the pastor was assisted by deacons, performing de facto pastoral roles, whilst also performing the normal administrative functions usually ascribed to deacons. This has meant that often the expectancy of performing this de facto pastoral role, has led to a more selective process for choosing deacons, often precluding some well-equipped and gifted men from a serving ministry because they did not simultaneously qualify as elders. We look at the pastoral role generally, but with a view to multiplying this role in order to meet the needs of growing congregations through the introduction of elders. Some practical considerations are given for the transition to introduce these changes. Alongside this, what is the function of women in leadership ministries of the church?

Book Burning Yet Not Consumed

Download or read book Burning Yet Not Consumed written by Karimi Mumbui and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2013-01-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A call to the ordained ministry is a most humbling experience for any Minister who genuinely, enthusiastically and wholeheartedly responds to the Master's call. It demands a single-minded focus and intensity. The glare of the guiding Light dazzles all other considerations, dimming what would otherwise look far more lucrative and appealing. It is this obedience and commitment that the Minister, in his or her human frailty, could be wearied by the burden of caring for others 'in and out of season'. Dr. Kar mi brings in this book, a vast experience ranging two decades of dedicated ministry in East Africa and America with a short stint in South Africa. His wide exposure to ministerial challenges within the dictates of diverse socio-cultural and economic environment makes him an apt rapporteur who brings to the fore the often unvoiced hurdles that these worthy Servants of God have to surmount. Rev. M ngai Wakaba, MTh. Presbyterian Minister, Nairobi, Kenya. An excellent book. The author has taken advantage of the fact that stress is becoming an issue of concern among clergy in Africa. Written in accessible language, the book speaks directly to the African church and to those who plan to partner with the church in Africa. Specific examples from the author's personal experiences, real voices of clergy, church leaders, and church members in Africa gives very practical sense of the problem of stress among clergy in the African church. The author concludes with practical solutions for stress management among the clergy in Africa. Rev. M g Kamau Ph.D. LPC Professor, Grand Rapids Community College Grand Rapids, MI, USA The Rev. Dr. Kar mi M mb i is an ordained minister of the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. He holds a Diploma in Water Technology from the Kenya Water Institute, Nairobi, Bachelor of Divinity degree from St. Paul's University, Limuru, Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Central Baptist Theological Seminary, Kansas and a Doctorate of Ministry from Oral Roberts University, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Book The Making of a Pastor Chaplain

Download or read book The Making of a Pastor Chaplain written by Barbara Helen Maisonneuve-Wilson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-12-27 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CAUTION This book may introduce you to the stark realities of a modern-day pilgrim who seeks the fuller life at the feet of Jesus. No pat answers. No attempt to resolve the mysterious interface between God's will and his willingness to let us muddle through the mess of life. The author tells the simple but engaging story of her struggles, aspirations, frustrations, and satisfaction of walking with Jesus the best that she could. Don't be annoyed at her humanity ̄accept it as a humble gift and insight into your own experience. Barb brings us fascinating insights into the different stages of her faith's development and a challenge to reflect upon our own. Certainly good food for great thoughts! Rev. Stephen W. Chaloner, B.Th M.T.S. Regional Director PAOC Africa ----------------------------------------------------------- As I read through this book I kept thinking that this evolution should be read and even studied as a reflection, which is necessary for a person entering the ministry. As Wilson shares her life, family, and ministry events and memories, she has taken the opportunity to openly expose her experiences centered against the backdrop of the seven life stages of recurrent development (1) in the context of her Faith walk. The transparency is refreshing, when in my reading, I found that generally speaking, clergies have a hard time sharing openly their life experiences. Wilson, in her book, encourages pastors, ministers, and clergies to come clean as we live and preach and teach in our respective contexts. By the “storytelling” of her life and faith development, she has given the reader a glimpse of her faith and relationship with Jesus Christ and how this relates to family, friends, community, and ministry interaction with other people; thus, allowing the reader to face life with hope. I would recommend anyone entering a ministry in any context to read this book in order to gain an appreciation of what shapes a ministry and some ways of processing our lived experiences, and forgiving ourselves for our sins and shortcomings. Thank you, Barbara, for giving us your readers, insights from a distance in the “Making of a Pastor/Chaplain” (1) Robert Kegan, “The Evolving Self, Problem and Process in Human Development.” Phillip J. Robillard, Minister of “Faith Community” in downtown Toronto, Ontario. ----------------------------------------------------------- Sometimes, we may take the events of our lives for granted; and, we may be lulled into leaving well enough alone, even though deep down we have a sense that something is missing or not quite right. At other times, we may thirst for a greater depth of meaning in what we are about. As we examine our lives, we may become more aware of experiences, good or bad, associated with past, present or foreseen events. What we may be less aware of, in the moment, is the part we can play in shaping our personal experience of whatever takes place into a more satisfying life journey. This book illustrates how the author, Barbara Wilson, reflected deeply on pivotal life events which, if left unexamined, would have diminished greatly the personal meaning she was able to harvest in her journey through life. She believed in and exercised her inner capacity to move beyond the erstwhile story line of the world into which she was born, by re-visioning and re-shaping experienced events into a living story with satisfactory space both for personal meaning-making and for enabling her to live her preferred values. Her candid reflection on events in her life, many of them painful, others full of joy, as well as her insightful evaluations of these stepping stones and her courageous choices for new directions will inspire and motivate many to take a second look at how they, too, can answer for themselves the pivotal questions: Am I satisfied with my life experience? Who do I want to be now? Who do I want to become? How do I reshap

Download or read book Practical Ministry written by Reg W Miller and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-14 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ministry is misunderstood by many who see a pastor on Sunday morning in a pulpit or go to hear an evangelist holding a service in a church or public auditorium. The "work of the ministry" is far more than just preaching and praying for people. Ministry may include mowing the grass, painting rooms or the building, cleaning up after a bad roof leak, or even planning or participating in construction.Ministry in an organized form is also a business. This means knowledge of zoning laws, insurance requirements, maybe getting sued or even charged with a crime (Paul did not go to jail "just because"). Even preaching, under some conditions, can land you in jail.Ministry can mean betrayal, the greatest disappointments you will ever experience, heartaches that cause you to pray for the opportunity to "go home to be with the Lord," and a battle with the "spirit of bitterness." It can also be the most rewarding experience of the human experience, when one knows that one has been chosen by God for a special purpose. We have all been chosen by God, even if it is not as a pastor or evangelist or missionary. Every member of the Body of Christ is a "chosen minister" to represent the King of Kings as we travel through this journey of life. There is a "ministry" for each and every believer. This book is especially meant for those who discover that they have been chosen to represent the King as an apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor or teacher, or as a deacon or deaconess involved in the leadership of a church or ministry.
