Book excerpt: This study explored the prevalence of race-related stress, the relationship between race-related stress and psychological distress and the experiences of race-related stress among Division I Black male student-athletes. Prior research indicates experiences of racism can negatively influence psychological distress (Carter & Forsyth, 2010; Dunbar, 2006; Sue et al., 2007). Participated completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18; Derogatis, 2000), the Index of Race Related Stress-Brief (IRRS-B; Utsey, 1999), the Prolonged Activation and Anticipatory Race-Related Stress Scale (PARS; Utsey, Belvet, Hubbard, Fischer, Opare-Henaku, & Gladney, 2012), and a demographics questionnaire. A total of forty-seven Black male student-athletes participated in the quantitative portion of the study and ten participated in the qualitative portion. A series of simple linear regressions were used to predict psychological distress. Results indicated that race-related stress was found to be a moderate predictor of psychological distress. Eight themes were identified from the interview data that described experiences of racism experienced by the men related to their participation in Division I athletics: Navigating Labels Imposed by Others Takes a Toll, The Black Man's Burden, The Exploitation of the Black Male Student Athlete, Navigating Layers of Oppression and Privilege, Survival, Institutional vs. Individual Racism in Athletics, No Sense of Belonging and Lessons Learned and Hopes for Future Student Athletes. The study's findings contribute to the literature documenting the detrimental effects of experiences of racism. Additionally, the findings support the significance of cultural considerations in diagnosis and treatment of mental health disorders.

Book excerpt: This study examines the connection between experiences of stress by sophomore women collegiate student-athletes and the coping strategies they adopt to deal with their stress. The study employs qualitative investigation strategies of focus group interviews and individual interviews to examine stress and coping among women student-athletes at one medium sized private university in the Washington metropolitan area. Ideas from theorists Erving Goffman and Emile Durkheim contribute to a conceptual framework for exploring both constructive and less-constructive coping strategies in the face of the stress experienced by women student-athletes. The study reveals the interconnections among understandings expressed by participants about sources of stress--notably the structural relations between coaches and student-athletes--and engaging in both constructive coping strategies--generally individual and informal--and less-constructive coping strategies--specifically, drinking alcohol and disordered eating--within the community of athletes.

Book excerpt: Collegiate student-athletes are a unique group of individuals who experience a vast array of cognitive and physiological stressors. In addition to the typical stressors of an average college student, such as homesickness, finances, academics, and social relationships, student-athletes must also cope with lack of free time, pressure to perform, relationships with coaches and teammates, and physiological stress due to training and competing. Student-athletes with unmanaged chronic stress are more likely to experience a plethora of negative health outcomes, effecting performance in the classroom, on the field, and in life. Currently, survey instruments exist to predict cognitive and physiological sources of stress in isolation, but no existing instrument integrates both cognitive and physiological stressors into a single measure of chronic stress. The current cross-sectional study compared magnitude and sources of stress, psychological and physiological, experienced by Montana State University student-athletes (n=30) and their non-athlete counterparts (n=22). In addition, associations between chronic stress (as indicated by hair cortisol concentration, or HCC) and subjective measures of psychological stress, physiological stress and sleep quality were assessed in a subgroup of participants (n=12 student-athletes; n=9 non-athletes). Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to develop a better understanding of college coaches' experiences with student-athlete mental health concerns, knowledge to address these concerns, and dispositions and attitudes toward student-athlete mental health. Although student-athlete mental health has been the subject of previous research, this is the first study to ask college coaches their perspectives on the topic. Data for the study were collected using a Web-based survey with a sample of college athletic coaches who coach male and female student athletes at Division I athletic programs in the Northeastern United States. The study's findings confirm coaches' concern and care for their student-athletes who experience mental health issues, and that coaches agree that their coaching role should include helping student-athletes who experience challenges. Coaches frequently and increasingly encounter student-athlete mental health issues and are actively engaged in helping to mitigate these issues. Coaches for women's athletic teams encountered student athletes with mental health disorders more frequently and experienced higher rates of stress related to student-athlete mental health than coaches for men's teams. Coaches reported high levels of stress and want more institutional support and an embedded mental health counselor within their athletic department. Overall, coaches embrace their roles as first responders to student-athletes struggling with complex mental health issues.

Book excerpt: Division I student-athletes are faced with unique and sometimes stressful college experiences. They are expected to meet the academic rigors associated with attending college while also excelling in their team sport. And yet, research reported by the NCAA (2016) indicates student-athletes are less likely to seek mental health counseling than their non-athlete counterparts for issues related to depression and anxiety. The hesitation to seek mental health counseling has been attributed to the athletic culture, influences of those close to the student-athlete, and a lack of resources. In order to best assist student-athletes with mental health related concerns, including performance anxiety, one must first hear their narratives. A mixed-methods research study was conducted to explore the prevalence of and issues associated with help-seeking behavior of college student-athletes. The results of this study indicated that while student-athletes struggled with the same mental health concerns of their non-athlete counterparts, they had an increased pressure of maintaining their student-athlete identity. The challenge in addressing their mental health needs was due to the lack of time available for anything other their academic and athletic commitments. The most desired (and possibly most effective) solution in accommodating the emotional and mental health needs of this unique student population was being able to seek mental health services within the confines of the athletic department. This location was found to be a safe place in which student-athletes spent the majority of their time and felt the most connected to the campus, peer group, and stakeholders.

Book excerpt: This study explored eighteen National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II female student athletes’ experiences and opinions of help seeking for mental health concerns. A mixed methodological design was used. Qualitative and quantitative data was collected to gain an understanding of help seeking barriers for the participant and their beliefs about help seeking barriers for their peers. Results from the qualitative data identified several themes that assisted in understanding help seeking behaviors. Data suggest that there was a lack of motivation when it came to seek mental health services as a whole by the female student athlete population. Time, lack of understanding as to where to get counseling, as well as lack of information as a whole showed to be the most prominent barriers within the female athlete population. There was also a significant finding involving lack of information and the amount of time the participant has been at the university, showing that the longer they were at the university the less information they had about mental health services. Many themes were also collected such as fear of being misunderstood, as well as feeling there is a lack of qualified counselors and a lack of counselors of the respondents’ own gender and race.
